Heroes | Stephen Fry
Few mere mortals have ever embarked on such bold and heart-stirring adventures, overcome myriad monstrous perils, or outwitted scheming vengeful gods, quite as stylishly and triumphantly as Greek heroes. Join Jason aboard the Argo as he quests for the Golden Fleece. See Atalanta - who was raised by bears - outrun any man before being tricked with golden apples. Witness wily Oedipus solve the riddle of the Sphinx and discover how Bellerophon captures the winged horse Pegasus to help him slay the monster Chimera. Heroesis the story of what we mortals are truly capable of - at our worst and our very best.

This is another great book retelling Greek myths written and read by Stephen Fry. I listened to the whole thing this weekend, but the way it‘s divided up by hero would also make it a great book to dip in and out of.

This was the book my classicist friends are discussing later! As with the other two in the series, I loved Fry‘s storytelling style. I also loved how I didn‘t already know everything in the book as well - I have zero memory of Bellerophon from college. The only reason this one is my least favorite of the three (not that it‘s bad!) is because Fry really glorifies ancient heroes and I tend to look at them through a more critical lens.

Nice to read about about Greek mythology with this one 🤓 the parts on Medea gave me flashbacks of my dissertation! 😆 Look forward to reading the next installment...

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.

26 Jan - 9 Feb 2021 (audiobook)
I must admit to being disappointed that Heracles bears little resemblance to the Disney hero - he kills Meg!?!
This book was less familiar than Mythos - I know more of the gods than the heroes - but tried to do as Fry said and not worry too much about recalling all the names. Many of the stories were captivating.
I just ordered hardcopies of all three illustrated volumes - a valuable addition to our library.

AlysonCB Definitely my favourite of the three. So interesting 🤩 3y

This was just as fun as the first one. It‘s almost better than the first. It had all the charm and appeal of the first book, and has me not-so-patiently awaiting the third instalment.

Stephen Fry does a fairly good job of explaining all the major heroes from Greek myth to us. I wish he had added even more detail to this because I love learning more about these guys.

Fry‘s Medea is unrepentant, cruel, vicious, petulant, unhinged and childish until the very end and that‘s annoying me a great deal. This is a powerful witch, I don‘t need her to be made like this again when there are 101 other ways of looking at her. But then again, does she need her to be anything more than those things?

I‘ve been on a Greek mythology bender (is that a thing?). I started from a Percy Jackson fanfiction and then obsessed with it, decided to just go ahead and read the Iliad and the odyssey and then keep going. I have read the usual suspects like the song of Achilles, Circe, Silence of the girls, a thousand ships, and a bunch of others, including Troy by this author but I‘m not done with the list of books I‘ve read (or the ones pending).

AkashaVampie Dont want to bug u but I have a reading challenge u might like for next yr. It's called #AmongTheGods it's for the whole year. Every 3 months is a different culture. Check it out when u get a chance. 3y

Greek myths retold by Stephen Fry with intelligence and humour. Admittedly I have been sort of obsessed with the musical Hadestown this year so any mention of Orpheus, Eurydice, Hades, Persephone or Hermes definitely piqued my interest 😁 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A fantastic follow up to Fry's book Mythos. His narration is wonderful but, as with Mythos, I will need to eventually track down a print version, as there are so many stories and characters to absorb.

Read-y_Picker Agreed! I‘m listening to Mythos but I put it on hold with that exact intention. Such a great presentation though. 3y

This is a continuation of Fry's book Mythos. I loved both but with this one, I missed seeing all the rich paintings & details included in the print version. Fry reads it himself, which is a delight. He tells the well-known tales of Medea, Hercules, Jason, etc. but infuses them with humor & cheek.

“It is your fate to be Heracles the hero, burdened with labours, yet it is also your choice. You choose to submit to it. Such is the paradox of living."

“So much for your false prophecies,” he said, waving the cup in the seer‘s face.... “There‘s many a slip ‘twist cup and lip,” said the seer.* *...according to Jenny March in her excellent Dictionary of Classical Mythology. If you put that into Google Translate, however, it comes out as “A lot of people are screaming and screaming” -go figure

Delightful, beautiful compilation of Greek hero stories written in jovial, accessible modern language. It's as if Fry is sitting and telling you the stories himself as you sip on something tasty. The art, maps, and pictures of antiquities scattered through it make it a more immersive experience as well. This is a followup to his Mythology book but can be read as standalone. 4 stars for me!

If you loved Mythos, which I did, you equally love Heroes. Stephen Fry's narration is superb, I laughed out loud many times. I highly recommend the audiobook, although I'm sure the written version is just a witty. One question, why did all the villains in the book have Scottish accents? I thought it was just random at first, then it popped up more and more. I thought it was curious. 5 💥💥💥💥💥

Book 2 for #NutsInMay readathon.

When you run across a phrase in a book and the only thing you can think of is the complete opposite of what the author was actually talking about. Hoo, boy, monstrous all right. 😂😂😂

In Greek Mythology, Echidna was a half woman- half serpent monster, which was really what Stephen Fry was talking about. But my brain gives me THIS.

CarolynM My mind would do the same. I wonder how those cute, harmless little creatures wound up with such a monstrous name? 4y

Brilliant. I listened to this on audio, narrated by Stephen Fry, & highly recommend it - it‘s like a theatre performance - superb. So engaging my children loved it (but there are some fruity scenes - ages 12/13+ I think 😉). A great introduction to Heracles, Jason & the Argonauts, Medea & more. The stories have all the drama, tragedy & big themes - easy to see why they endure. Add Fry‘s character voices & humour & it‘s a magical adventure.

Freespirit Listening to this sounds brilliant! 5y

Mythos was great, this was not.
Desperately needed less genealogy and more telling great stories. How do you make the slaying of Medusa kind of meh?
WELL? Please explain.

Weaponxgirl That‘s disappointing to hear. The slaying of medusa should always be epic 5y
