Heroes | Stephen Fry
15 posts | 9 read | 2 reading | 29 to read
Few mere mortals have ever embarked on such bold and heart-stirring adventures, overcome myriad monstrous perils, or outwitted scheming vengeful gods, quite as stylishly and triumphantly as Greek heroes. Join Jason aboard the Argo as he quests for the Golden Fleece. See Atalanta - who was raised by bears - outrun any man before being tricked with golden apples. Witness wily Oedipus solve the riddle of the Sphinx and discover how Bellerophon captures the winged horse Pegasus to help him slay the monster Chimera. Heroesis the story of what we mortals are truly capable of - at our worst and our very best.

I love love love Greek myths and it turns out I also love the way Steven Fry tells them. Without any modern plot twist or cliche transformations Fry makes the myths feel fresh, remarkable considering their ancient origins. My favourite part has to be the continued explanation of how certain words evolved from the name of new characters - it‘s an unexpected bonus that is just as interesting as the myths themselves.

I listened to this on audio - and Stephen Fry is an absolute delight. I was giggling and guffawing and generally having such a good time I didn‘t even realise I was learning something. Bravo Sir⁣

Susannah I just finished his Mythos on audio. It was great! 2mo

I love myth retellings. And who better to be my guide than the wry Mr. Fry? 😏

Brilliant. I listened to this on audio, narrated by Stephen Fry, & highly recommend it - it‘s like a theatre performance - superb. So engaging my children loved it (but there are some fruity scenes - ages 12/13+ I think 😉). A great introduction to Heracles, Jason & the Argonauts, Medea & more. The stories have all the drama, tragedy & big themes - easy to see why they endure. Add Fry‘s character voices & humour & it‘s a magical adventure.

Freespirit Listening to this sounds brilliant! 4mo

Pretty excited to start this after enjoying Mythos so much last year. One of my favourite things about Mythos was how it was mostly about the lesser known Greek myths so it'll be interesting to see how Stephen Fry takes on the heroes!

I FEEL LET DOWN.
Mythos was great, this was not.
Desperately needed less genealogy and more telling great stories. How do you make the slaying of Medusa kind of meh?
WELL? Please explain.

Weaponxgirl That‘s disappointing to hear. The slaying of medusa should always be epic 8mo

I‘m listening to this on audio, narrated by Stephen Fry. As with Mythos, it‘s a joy - the stories are dramatic and entertaining, & he‘s the consummate narrator - a treat akin to going to the theatre. 👌🏼🎧

mom2bugnbee I'm listening to his narration of Harry Potter for the first time. (Read in print multiple times.) Just delightful. 9mo
