I loved the character dynamics, the gradual worldbuilding, the way it slipped in the unexpected! I was also intrigued by the way it handled the whole religion thing.
It was a great read and I cannot wait for the next book!

1. Pretty good dark fantasy story.
2. Black with a black cat design.
3. I let my niece talk me into taking in two kitties that needed a home since the animal clinic they‘ve been living in is closing. They are 9 and 13, and this is their first time living in a house.

This had so many twists and turns that at times i was frustrated by constantly being reminded of the lack of trust between the two main chracters and how it was a key point at the end. Like a warning bell or a red flag that was a foreshawdowing.

This was delightful and i am excited and eager to read the next book in the series.

A Girl. A Prince. A Monster.

I wasn‘t sure how I felt about this at first but after a few chapters I got pulled into the story and found myself really enjoying it. It was a very dark story with a lot of fighting, a lot of blood, and a dangerous love. I would recommend to lovers of dark/gothic fantasy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So i have started reading this book and it has made me think of why Adults Read YA.

When this book was talked about on All The Books Podcast I dont recall if it was mentioned as a YA.

I have thoughts on Adults who read YA.

1.) Yes, I think it is important for you to read YA novels. This helps broaden your understanding of how teens and YAs are changing society.

2.) You need to be respectful in their space. You are a guest in the YA space

LibrarianRyan I knew this was considered YA and i agree with you. I just wish, so much of the YA currently is older YA to appeal to adults. books such as Maas, Six of Crows, etc. Its the younger YA that really seems to be missing out currently.

Also, one of the things I hate the most is when an adult reads a YA book and says, “it's just too YA“. of course it is, its who its geared to.
2mo
rsteve388 Right!!! So Right. I think there is a real conversation around why isnt adult litature fulfilling to adults? That they have to go and read YA? Also YA covers are SO MUCH BETTER then Adukt novels I am sad to have to admit that. 2mo
rsteve388 I mean literally Bookstores are catered to adults... I mean really the whole damn store is for Adults.... The two sectioms that arent are kids and YA. Be respectful to thoes groups. 2mo
See All 6 Comments
LibrarianRyan @rsteve388 I think part of it is that adult novels are formulaic and adult readers reach for what they know. They know what they are going to get when they pick up James Patterson or Nora Roberts. Plus adult stories are never ending. Think about Grafton with 25 books about the same characters. Most YA hits a trilogy and moves on to new things. At most 5 or 6 books. The only series with double digit editions are either written by multiple ⬇ (edited) 2mo
LibrarianRyan authors like Nancy Drew, 39 Clues, or its RL Stein and his fear street novels. You don't see YA authors with long standing characters. Why? Because their readers are not long standing. They have such a short time to grab them, before they have outgrown things.

And don't get me started on bookstores.
2mo
rsteve388 .... Poke poke please get started on bookstores :) Wow it just dawned on me that Mystery novels are formulaic.. I have just started Louise Penny and your right, same chracters over a large number of books. 2mo

The synopsis can be misleading, you have no clue how the characters will be united for the same cause, which is why after such a long time I found myself reading way past my bed time and went to work devastated. Wicked Saints from Emily A. Duncan completely went behind my expectations, it has unique morally questionable characters and fascinating discussions about magic and gods. 5 ⭐

Not quite the Girl Powery trope fest it was described as. I‘ll give it points for interesting (albeit at times confused) world building and the ending felt refreshingly truthful — but fair warning, the love story is a trash fire. 😂

2.5/5 ?
This book is a mash up of all the YA fantasies you have ever read. There was nothing special/unique about it. The characters were "angry teengers" trying to save the world. I didn't like the writing. I feel like the writer was trying to hard to make the story interesting but failed multiple times. I'm usually nice to writers and their books but I couldn't find anything good about this one to recommend to an other reader.

I can‘t post the exact quote because I‘m worried it would spoil a part of the story, but Serefin has some great sarcastic lines. I had to set the book down and just grin at his snark. I‘m getting close to the end and I‘m excited to see where it goes.

I am so glad I am done, I am also glad I went in with low expectations because this was just horrible. The tag line is such a lie, Nadya does NOTHING that is worthy of that tag line. The story focused so much more on Malachiasz and Serefin then it did on her. I actually forgot about her at one point. She is a background character not an MC, the love story was rushed and predictable (and unhealthy) and the writing was atrocious, (commas use them)

Sweetkokoro Overall this was a pain to read, what kept me going was Serefin and Kacper their story parts were so much more interesting and the underlying feelings that were written between them was so much more believable then the “main love story” I would not recommend this to anyone and I more then likely won‘t pick up the follow up. 4mo
Sweetkokoro Also the last 100 pages were basically just the author stretching for page counts, so much unnecessary making out, and the use of writing lists of words without the use of commas and instead relying heavily on the word “and” plus a whole chapter that kept repeating the same lines over and over again. shesssh. (edited) 4mo
BooknerdsLife Awww Love & Thank you for your honest review! I‘ve been wondering about this book due to all the hypes on bookstagram but I‘ve also seen some mixed reviews about it! What a shame tho...that cover design is gorgeous! 4mo
Sweetkokoro @BooknerdsLife your welcome. I can‘t stand when people give false reviews and over hype something that isn‘t worth it, and frankly that‘s how I feel about a lot of YA books that get popular through bookstagram. A lot of times I feel they say it‘s good because it has a good cover and they can post endless images of it over and over again. This book is not worth the hype in anyway whatsoever. 4mo

Alright day two reading this and so far, I AM BORED.
I do not like Nadya, one minute she is like “I have to fight to save everyone” but then her actions are “oh snap gotta run away cuz I‘m scared” the tag line should have been “She fears it all” also a pronunciation guide would have been LOVELY, considering half the names are Russian inspired and the other half are names like Theodore.

Sweetkokoro Also I hope Anna starts to be useful?!? Cuz homegirl is just there and she is suppose to be a higher rank then Nadya? But she doesn‘t do...anything 4mo
tjwill I hope it starts getting better! I got this in an Owl Crate but haven‘t read it yet. I saved a pronunciation guide I found. I‘ll make a post and tag you in it. 4mo
Sweetkokoro @tjwill I‘m 117 pages in and I‘m bored and annoyed so I‘m keeping my expectations low still, also that pronunciation guide would be so lovely, as I have started nicknaming places and changing names as I just don‘t know how to even attempt to say some of these names and that‘s frustrating. 4mo

Jumping into this one I‘m keeping my expectations low despite all the hype for this book. I have lots of issues with YA so I don‘t keep my hopes up anymore. 1 chapter down & so far the names frustrate me, & the “oh my gosh they are here for me how could they know about me” is bothering me, they were stormed by an army out of nowhere, how the hell do you know they are there for you?? Especially if your countries have been in a century old war 😒

Sweetkokoro Also it seems the one character who I might have enjoyed is most likely already dead, so that‘s cool I guess :/ 4mo
BooknerdsLife Same!! I‘ve been debating if I should get to this book due to all it‘s hype!!! The synopsis sounds quite interesting but I‘ve seen lots of mixed reviews too 🙈 Love Reading your thoughts about it 😁👍🏼 Guess I will wait til it‘s on sale or my library gets a copy instead of buying right now 🤗 4mo
Sweetkokoro @BooknerdsLife oh it‘s not getting any better so far. I‘m already disliking the main girl, I can tell she is gonna be an idiot who makes all the worst choices, but oh wait she is some heavenly divine cleric so she must absolutely amazing right 🙄 Im glad my thoughts keep you entertained haha. If you do get it, make it a library copy. 4mo
BooknerdsLife @Sweetkokoro Hahaaaaa 🤣🤣 That sounds super annoying! I hate nothing more than reading about idiot who‘s supposed to be the hero of the book! 😂🙈 I have no doubt I‘ll end up being entertained more by your comments than the book itself! LOL Definitely waiting for library copy! 👍🏼 4mo

Wicked Saints has exactly the kind of character for a (potential? hopeful?) LI that I always enjoy, which is a euphemistic way to say that he‘s been through a hell of a lot, and should really see a therapist.

Not a bad YA fantasy story about warring religious and political factions. The author created an interesting world, but could have done a bit more to describe it. The romance (there‘s always one or two in these books) didn‘t feel forced but was definitely ill-advised. Writing was pretty solid. Biggest complaint is the terrible Dracula-like accents the audiobook narrators used for some of the characters. Just bad. 3⭐️ overall.

This fantasy novel starts with an interesting premise but becomes problematic quickly. Poor character development, a weak and dithering female protagonist, confusing plot lines and characters who practice magic by cutting themselves. Ugh.
