The Girl in Red
The Girl in Red | Christina Henry
From the national bestselling author of Alice comes a postapocalyptic take on the perennial classic "Little Red Riding Hood"...about a woman who isn't as defenseless as she seems. It's not safe for anyone alone in the woods. There are predators that come out at night: critters and coyotes, snakes and wolves. But the woman in the red jacket has no choice. Not since the Crisis came, decimated the population, and sent those who survived fleeing into quarantine camps that serve as breeding grounds for death, destruction, and disease. She is just a woman trying not to get killed in a world that doesn't look anything like the one she grew up in, the one that was perfectly sane and normal and boring until three months ago. There are worse threats in the woods than the things that stalk their prey at night. Sometimes, there are men. Men with dark desires, weak wills, and evil intents. Men in uniform with classified information, deadly secrets, and unforgiving orders. And sometimes, just sometimes, there's something worse than all of the horrible people and vicious beasts combined. Red doesn't like to think of herself as a killer, but she isn't about to let herself get eaten up just because she is a woman alone in the woods....

A great post-apocalyptic journey through the forest to get to grandmothers house! This was creepy and suspenseful- I really enjoyed it. Will definitely check out more by this author!

In conversations with @gibblr I described this as Little Red Hiding Hood meets Bird Box but without the blindfolds. (Though the writing is weaker than Mallerman‘s.)

The beginning feels like third-person stream of consciousness, but if you can get past that, it‘s not bad. My initial reaction was to hate the ending, but I quickly realized I‘m okay with it. I understand why some people will not like the ending. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I wasn't sure whether to put so-so or pick, but as you see chose so-so. A modern retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. It was ok but the ending left me a bit flat! I do want to read her other retellings though. Plus this cover is lovely! #bookcovers

WanderingBookaneer I agree about the ending. I just told a friend that I need time for the ending to sink in. 3w

Well, this was different than I expected.

Some bits were gratuitous, like a clunky couple of paragraphs about Red's attractions, and some were a little off, like some of the ways the youngest characters acted, and some were just kind of bizarre, like some spoilery things I won't mention.

Overall it was a quick, fun read that I'm certain to forget almost immediately.

ImperfectCJ And I should also mention that the ending was profoundly disappointing but not in a way that's likely to stick with me. 1mo

Staring this one today. I thought now was the perfect time of year to give it ago, also now is when my library hold finally decided to come through. I am always a sucker for fairy tale retellings so here is hoping this doesn't disappoint.

MY RATING 4.2 STARS | GRADE B+

Red Riding Hood On Her Way to Grandma's House
Fairytale Retelling
Viral Apocalypse

Horror-if-ic
If you like your fairytale retellings to be fun and full of happy elements...this isn't quite the right fit for you. This one is bleak and full of end of the world sadness and destruction. See my review here: https://leahsbookishobsession2.blogspot.com/2019/09/the-girl-in-red-by-christina...

Little red riding hood retelling, there's a plague and possibly something else loose in the world but Red will be safe if she can manage to hike to her grandmother's house in the, you guessed it, woods.😄

It's the end of the world as we know it and Red has to walk through the woods to get to Grandma's house. She may be alone but she doesn't need anyone to save her. This time SHE is the hunter.

I LOVED this apocalyptic spin on Little Red Riding Hood. Even better she is a POC AND differently abled. Hoping for a sequel because there were plenty of questions left unanswered about the creatures themselves.

#BookMail Pt4 Christina Henry writes very disturbing takes on famous fairytales, this one is of course a version of Red Rising Hood. Red is a woman trying to survive on her own in a world gone mad. With most of the people now in camps, the woods are full of predators, but not all of them are animals. But Red is not going to give up just because she‘s alone.

j.rye I love new takes on classics. The Dorothy Must Die series was so good! 5mo

Red is a woman alone in the woods trying to make it to grandma‘s house. Her survival skills come from zombie and slasher movies. She travels lightly, but has to watch out for her prosthetic leg. Things aren‘t like they used to be. People are kept quarantined and she‘s not supposed to be alone in the woods. But Red has her ax, and she‘s not afraid to use it. Engaging retelling of Little Red Riding Hood.

I‘ve been dying to go hiking this week, but the heat in VA is just not working with me (111 heat index!). I‘ve been so bored inside even Red‘s post-apocalyptic hiking is starting to sound fun 🤣 hoping for a break in the heat soon!!

This is a bold & unique retelling of the classic fairytale, Little Red Riding Hood. This story is told from Red‘s viewpoint & it picks up after the Crisis has devastated countless towns. What really cracked me up was that all of Red‘s knowledge for what she thought she should be doing in this post-apocalyptic world was based upon the science-fiction, zombie, & slasher films and books that she had gorged herself on growing up. I enjoyed the ride!

hannah-leeloo Can't wait to read this. I've read her books before and love them especially lost boy. Have high hope for this. @Jackal121 6mo

Christina Henry nails it again in this Red Riding Hood retelling.
Red is a bi, amputee, POC trying to survive and make it to Grandma‘s house after a virus wipes out a huge chunk of the population.
While Red tries her hardest to keep herself and her family alive, we see how people act when the rules of society crumble away.
