Surprisingly, I'm not all that familiar with this story -- never saw any of the movies or anything like that -- and honestly, I was less than impressed. Maybe the narrator just didn't have me adequately creeped out!

An entertaining and scary read, the true? story of the most haunted house in the US. Being a fan of the movies and the Conjuring series, it was fun to read the original story. Though there were some cringy parenting moments-it shows its age, and the second storyline of the priest slows down the pace. A fun spooky book. 4⭐️

Todays #scarathlon photo prompt: Dark

I read this book a few years back, and while I‘m not really certain if any of the paranormal events actually happened, nonetheless the backstory behind the house is very dark indeed. It was honestly a tragedy what happened in that house before the Lutz family bought it. #blackcatcrew

Gonna give this one a go. It‘s a re-read from my teenage years & I‘m curious to know if I can follow along with it on 🎧📖 audio without getting g lost.

🔪: 1

DieAReader @Laughterhp Does this count as a ‘Theme Read‘ or a ‘Halloween Read‘ ‘cause it‘s horror? 14mo
Laughterhp So, there are no theme reads this year. Unless it directly relates to Halloween, like characters celebrate or it‘s set on Halloween, it would be a Halloween read. If not, it would be 20pts for a spooky read. 14mo
DieAReader @Laughterhp Awesome! Ty❤️‍🔥👻📖🎧 14mo

DieAReader @Laughterhp Another few questions, sry👩🏻‍✈️: What are the points for short stories? If I read a full book of short stories, do I get points for each story & book or just the book? A bit brain foggy this morning, sry again. 14mo
Laughterhp You get points for each short story you read. So if it‘s a book of spooky short stories, you would get 20pts for each short story. You wouldn‘t get points for then finishing the book though. 14mo

Day 1 of the #scarathlon photo challenge - Black

I‘m sharing the Twine cd that I listened to recently while I was finishing up a coloring page that was a work in progress for months. I enjoyed the music and I‘m also sharing one of the team buddy reads. I have it on my Audible app. I forgot to add it to my TBR for the readathon but it sounds interesting to me. I hope I can find time to read it this month.

So happy to have finally read this! I've always come back to this story over the years but never made it to the book. Definitely written in a way that can make you feel how unsettled this family was. Do I believe this really happened or was it all a hoax? Meh, I'm pretty set on my mind I think but it's still one hell of a story!

28 days of terror in a house possessed by evil spirits.

This was the second time I‘ve read this. This is one of the scarier books I‘ve read. Another one I won‘t read at night as it tends to creep me out the later in the day I read it. Good book, though. Hard to put down.

Forget the films, the pop culture references, Ryan Reynolds, and the old Reddit arguments over historical accuracy. Pretend it‘s 1975, find a vintage copy of this retelling of what may (or may not?) have occurred to the Lutz family in the infamous Long Island house…and just try to sleep without the lights on. This classic isn‘t disturbing or thought-provoking as much as it‘s downright scary, plain and simple - maybe one of the scariest ever.

🎧📖It wasn't too bad. Definitely a bit creepy, and it reads like a true crime novel. *Spoiler Warning?* If I had gone into thinking it was real it would have been better (creepier), but knowing it was a hoax helped manage my expectations.

Very interesting, I don‘t know what to think of how “true” this true story is. What really gets me is that the family is being antagonized by a demonic presence in the house and these Amityville kids still have to go to school and eat their broccoli 🥦 as if nothing is going on 😂

Audiobook was well paced, read by Ray Porter who used an appropriate cadence and tone for the material.

I did not actually know this classic horror was set during Christmas but it was a welcome surprise for #wintergames2021! Yes, this was a very by the books haunted house story and it didn‘t redefine anything for the genre, but it was delightfully creepy and very well done. I was completely absorbed and it made walking home alone from my booster shot in the dark very creepy.

I really didn‘t do great for #scarathlon2021 or any of the readathons last week…busy week at work and I was sick all weekend 🤢. Anyway, I did watch this documentary on Tubi (it was ok) and finished Squid Games (5 episodes) over the weekend so there‘s 31 points for #teamslaughter. Creative "non-fiction" for sure but kind of boring as a fiction haunted house story.

One of the classic horror stories that I was avoiding, but it's worth it to see the collection of modern ghost story tropes all in one place.

1. I‘ve had a lot of those experiences. When I was 16 my mom bought a house that came with a ghost. Lots of strange happenings there. One of the first things I remember there was watching something roll a ball back and forth across the living room floor with my cat. In my current house, a little while after my mom died I smelled her perfume in my bedroom and heard her voice say my name once.

In December 1975, the Lutz family moved into their new home on suburban Long Island. George and Kathleen Lutz knew that, one year earlier, Ronald DeFeo had murdered his parents, brothers, and sisters in the house, but the property - complete with boathouse and swimming pool - and the price were too good to pass up.

Although thought to be a true story at the time this book was written, it is anything but. Even though the Lutz family maintains their story to this day. The reason this book worked so well was perceived truth. Even know now we know the story to be completely debunked, it doesn't take away from the fact that it is indeed a good story regardless. It still holds up as a timeless horror novel and will most likely continue to do so.
⭐️⭐️⭐

Mistermandolin Have been meaning to read this one for a while. I remember when it came out on the wave of spookiness created by The Exorcist. Fascinating that it stands up so well even though it‘s been so completely debunked. A credit to Anson‘s writing skills, maybe. 4y
Artifice This book not only propelled Anson extensively but it also made the story more popular at the time. Like, "wow, someone wrote a book about it so it must be true." 4y

So I parked across the street and snapped this photo of the infamous Amityville house! Nevermind the Lutz drama, but don't forget that Ronnie DeFeo murdered 6 members of his family in here. #AmityvilleHorror #LongIsland @4thhouseontheleft

LibrarianRyan I miss the iconic windows. One of the owning families said they had to change the windows because of all the people taking pictures of and in the windows. 5y
IamIamIam @LibrarianRyan Yes, and they also changed the address for the same reason. I was driving on a side street leaving and there are a number of other houses that are the same construction and unaltered. I don't get over there too often but next time, I'll do a side by side. 😁 5y

alisiakae Thank you for taking the time to go and take a pic! I didn‘t realize the windows had been changed. 5y
IamIamIam @4thhouseontheleft They were changed at least 20 years ago if not more. There was a creepy dark brown house that was the same design but set sideways on the property so the front door is in the proper place. The property at the Horror house is long and that's the boathouse on the right side on 5y
IamIamIam @4thhouseontheleft *ugh* not "on", of the photo. I'll definitely head back next week and get more photos of the other house. That being said, Amityville has a lot of gorgeous Victorian houses with intricate gingerbread style moldings. I love driving around there and it's been a good 25 years since I spent time with old friends from high school! 5y
