Neil Gaiman is *always* brilliant!

I finished all the books I was reading at the end of February, so decided to read this book, as it was #1 on my #bookspinbingo list, and build my bingo with this book as the starting point.

This will be my first bingo, and I'm excited to participate. I've chosen to do the line - 5, 1, 3, 14, & 20... Am I doing this right, @TheAromaofBooks ?

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! There's basically no wrong way to do this 😂 Technically to get your entries for the end of the year giveaway, you'll need to read the two official BookSpin/DoubleSpin numbers (14 & 9) but you can work the challenge however helps you read the most!! 3y
SpiderGoddess @TheAromaofBooks Excellent. Then I'll add #9 to the list - Black Gods and Goddesses of the Bible. Yay! This should help me stay on track to read what I own, not but new books unnecessarily. (I might have an addiction. 🤣) 3y
TheAromaofBooks I literally got a box from Book Outlet today... I think someone is sneaking & ordering these when I'm not looking because I definitely don't need MORE books!! 😂 3y

Is there anything Neil Gaiman doesn't do well? This is the perfect Sherlockian-meets-Lovecraftian tale! While I've read this short story multiple times, this graphic novel edition is fabulous.

Delightfully odd little graphic novel. Sherlock Holmes meets Lovecraft. I‘m told this is a short story from Gaiman‘s Fragile Things, which I‘ve not gotten to yet on my TBR list. (Trying to save some of Mr Gaiman‘s work later. . .)

Leniverse I find that his short stories are better when illustrated. Case in point being "The Sleeper and the Spindle" and "The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountain". Decent stories that become haunting and perfect when merged with images that get to tell even more of the story. Something in his writing style that's left from his days of writing graphic novels, I think. 5y
Ericalambbrown @Leniverse I agree! And he does a great job of choosing fantastic illustrators. I love his work with Chris Riddell - The Sleeper and the Spindle is a favorite for sure. 5y
Clare-Dragonfly @Leniverse I didn‘t know there was an illustrated The Truth (etc.)—is it a stand-alone graphic novel? 5y
Leniverse @Clare-Dragonfly Not a graphic novel, no. But illustrated. By an artist named Eddie Campbell. There was a live performance in Sidney where Gaiman read the story, the illustrations were digitally displayed and a string quartet played music composed for the story. Oh to have been there! Sigh. 5y
Clare-Dragonfly @Leniverse Wow—that sounds amazing! 5y

tournevis @Ericalambbrown True 😆, but is it described in the book, I mean? I don't remember if Gaiman invented a composition for it. 5y

I really enjoy authors who like to take on a classics and give it there own stamp. Neil Gaiman does an amazing job of mix together Sir Author Conan Doyle and H.P. Lovercraft and which takes the reader on a fun ride with the stories mixing horror and mysterie together with cheeky salutes to Stevenson.

TimSpalding One of my favorite stories. Absolutely masterful how he “rides two bicycles“ with the plot--what you think it is, versus what it is. 5y

This short story from Gaiman‘s Fragile Things book has been adapted to a graphic novel. Great for Sherlock Holmes 🕵️‍♂️ fans. A murder has been committed, royal blood has been spilled, ( green blood, #emerald like); and Holmes will find out who did it.

As a Sherlock Holmes buff and an appreciator of the grotesque, I enjoyed this mashup of Victorian London with Elder Gods. This is a hardbound graphic novel version of Neil Gaiman‘s short story, and I think it achieved an effective blend of overt and implied horrors. It‘s a beautiful edition of an entertaining story.

Enjoyed this graphic novella about a world where Sherlock Holmes coexists with Lovecraftian monsters, Dracula and Jack the Ripper amongst others. It did feel a little bit unfinished, and I don‘t see other volumes available which is a bummer, because I think there is more to tell here.

Another Neil Gaiman Audiobook completed. It was within minutes that I realized this was a Sherlock Holmes inspired piece. While being a short story it didn‘t feel rushed and it didn‘t feel like anything was missing. The ever so slight darker elements Gaiman adds to his books are really something that is my favorite, he knows how and when to add them to the story without ruining it.

A qualified Pick. I read this at the insistence of Mr GaD who is a graphic novel & Cthulhu fan. I‘m a Holmes fan & a bit of a purist. I enjoyed the story, the in-jokes, the references to the Holmes canon and the art is great but I think you really need to have a grounding in Lovecraft‘s fiction to get the best out of this/ understand the ending. If you‘re a Holmes and Cthulhu fan, you will likely adore this but it‘s a tad too clever if you‘re not.

This story is based on Sherlock (title and mystery are based on A Study in Scarlet) and Lovecraft‘s Cthulhu (the old ones who are well known and even in the public eye), without ever stating those names. I loved this graphic representation of a supernatural mystery.

Another interesting pick for #WeveGotIssues #CBBR. I really enjoyed this mash up of Sherlock Holmes and HP Lovecraft. Not a huge fan of the art, but I liked the story. Victorian Royal Family question in the spoiler comments, if anyone has any insight it would be appreciated. 😘

DGRachel Why are Queen Victoria and her family often portrayed as not-human or not completely human in Sci-Fi and Fantasy tales? I‘ve seen them portrayed elsewhere as werewolves and wasn‘t there a theory that one of the princes was Jack the Ripper (who while maybe technically human was definitely a monster) 6y

wanderinglynn @tournevis Yes, yes you really do. Because Gaiman + Sherlock = 🤯😎🤩 (I‘m a book-buying enabler. 😉) 6y
wanderinglynn @GoodForCirculation I hope you get it. 🤞🏻 6y
tournevis @wanderinglynn I know of the original story and I also know there is a pretty good and very expensive board game based on it. But I have never read it nor played it. So I need the book. 6y
wanderinglynn @tournevis I knew it was originally published in Shadows Over Baker Street, but I did not realize there was a board game. So I looked it up & wow, you weren‘t wrong. $60 for a board game?!? WTF?! Then again, I don‘t buy many board games and I see on Amazon that board games range quite a bit in price. There‘s one selling for $120 🤯 6y
tournevis @wanderinglynn 60$ US. It's almost 90$ in Canada. Now, boardgames have changed a lot in the last 20$. We have moved far from Payday and Monopoly. And aome of them are worth the price. Gloomhaven cost close to 200$ in pounda and pounds of miniatures and cardboard. But 90$ is too rich for my blood. 6y
tessavi @wanderinglynn @tournevis modern boardgame fan here 🙌 Unfortunately those are normal prices. The Study in Emerald boardgame is good, but I would not recommend it if you're new to boardgames. 6y
wanderinglynn @tessavi Thanks. I enjoy playing board games, but just don‘t have anyone to play with. 😔 6y
tournevis @tessavi I have to agree with you there. @wanderinglynn If you are curious, most towns have boardgame groups that meet weekly. You can find them on MeetUp or Facebook. Mune meets at a pizzaria on Mondays. 6y
wanderinglynn @tournevis Yes, but that would involve going outside and meeting strangers. #introvertproblems 😂 6y
tournevis @wanderinglynn I get you there. I have the same issue, but you would be surprised at how many introverts are also in the game group. Makes things a lot easier, I found. 6y
tessavi I also found my group through Meetup as @tournevis suggested. @wanderinglynn I was so nervous the first time and planned on leaving after 1 game. I stayed for 6 hours 😂 6y
wanderinglynn @tessavi 😂 That‘s amazing! @tournevis Maybe one of these days my I‘ll get up the nerve. ☺️ 6y
