Story of an enduring friendship between Aisling and Elizabeth, from preWW2 through 1960s. Elizabeth‘s parents send her to a small town in Ireland to escape bombing in England. Characters are credible, human and flawed; which results in a compelling, though often sad, narrative.

Day 6 - #MaeveBinchy #AugustAuthors

Maeve Binchy (28 May 1939 – 30 July 2012) was an Irish novelist, playwright, short story writer, columnist, and speaker. Her novels were characterised by a sympathetic and often humorous portrayal of small-town life in Ireland, and surprise endings. Her death at age 73, announced on Irish television late on 30 July 2012, was mourned as the death of one of Ireland's best-loved and most recognisable writers.

EadieB I‘ve read almost all of her books and enjoyed them all. 4y

A few slow bits, but this novel displays unsurpassed powers of characterization on Binchy‘s part, and the BFF main characters, Aisling and Elizabeth, who come together as a result of Elizabeth‘s evacuation to Aisling‘s home in Ireland during the London blitz, have truly wonderful stories. #historicalfiction #strongwomen

My first Binchy & the authors first book. For #Booked2019 winter #SetInIrelandIrishAuthor
I enjoyed it very much.Binchy is a good storyteller & creates characters you want to know more about. When Elizabeth is sent to an Irish family to get away from ww2 & the Blitz, she befriends one of the daughters,Aisling.Often separated by miles & years , when help is needed , they are there for each other.A wonderful tale of lasting female friendship.

This was Maeve Binchy‘s first novel and really enjoyed the read, which had quite a surprising ending. As usual she tells a great yarn with some great characters. Interesting to see the difference in the post ww2 world of small town Ireland and England. I would give it 4.5 Stars, just a bit too abrupt an ending and I really NEED to know what happens next. Thanks to @EadieB And @JacqMac for great company during the #MaeveBinchyBuddyRead.

EadieB @Andrew65 @jacqMac I really enjoyed the book very much and I love Binchy‘s writing. I liked the characters and thought they were very believable. One thing I was surprised about was that Elizabeth pushed Henry down the stairs. Did I read that right? I know Henry was drunk but pushing him down the stairs which caused his death was a little shocking to me. How do you both feel about that incident? 6y
Andrew65 @Reviewsbylola We‘ll discuss it with you when you do. 😊 6y

Andrew65 @EadieB Did we know she actually pushed him down the stairs. Perhaps I need to read that again. I wondered if Harry had pushed him down the stairs. Really need to read that section again when less tired. Did I miss something? Great writing and a great story but rather an abrupt ending. I need to know what happens next! @JacqMac 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @JacqMac I‘ll have to read it again because I was a bit shocked so I might have read it wrong! 6y
JacqMac She felt threatened. I think she pushed him. I think Harry just witnessed it. But I‘m not 100% certain. Lol @Andrew65 @EadieB (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @JacqMac I wasn‘t either. @EadieB (edited) 6y
Elizabeth2 @Andrew65 @EadieB @JacqMac I know this post is months old, but I enjoyed reading your thoughts as I read the book. (She definitely pushed him. I think because he threatened to take Eileen. I think that she acted out of fear and as a mother. But I think in her hysteria, she doesn‘t know that she pushed him. Poor Harry to know and to have covered it up for her, as a father would. ) 6y

Finished this book from a buddy read with @Andrew65 and @JacqMac - Maeve Binchey‘s debut novel and a real winner. Loved the characters of Elizabeth and Aisling. Elizabeth from England goes to Ireland during World War II stays with O‘Connor family. Elizabeth and Aisling become best friends. Andrew65 @EadieB Not yet. Multi tasking at the moment, just posted the latest questions for Children of God and need to start the Group Read of Why Mermaids Sing. How do I fit my job in. 🙈😱 6y
JacqMac @EadieB @Andrew65 😂 I have too many books going, and they are all good. It‘s not hard to get swept up in a new one. Lol I‘m so happy that Aisling left her drunk husband, especially after he hit her. And I hate that Elizabeth settled. I was hoping he could be her big love. I hope it‘s not a repeat of her parents marriage. 6y
Andrew65 @JacqMac Yes It does feel as if Elizabeth settled, don‘t feel positive about this marriage. Aisling so had to leave what was becoming an increasingly abusive relationship! @EadieB 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @JacqMac I‘m glad Aisling left her husband too. Tony didn‘t seem to be changing and things were getting worse. Elizabeth and Henry do seem so much like Violet and George. Hope Aisling can make better choices in the future or will she be forever doomed? I wish her family could have been more supportive. Very odd that there is no divorce allowed in Ireland. No wonder why they drink so much! lol 6y

Andrew65 @EadieB They do seem to keep making poor choices. That divorce law was quite archaic. Divorce wasn‘t legal until 1997! 6y

Remember to put any posts under spoilers so as not to spoil the reading of others.

#MaeveBinchyBuddyRead #LightAPennyCandle

EadieB @andrew65 @JacqMac I would tell Aisling to leave her husband as he is nothing but a drunk. I would tell Elizabeth that I‘m glad she wised up and is no longer in love with Johnny. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Definitely the case where Aisling is concerned, she deserves so much better. Never thought the marriage would work but this isn‘t how I thought it‘d pan out. I worry Elizabeth is jumping into the first possible alternative, I think I‘d tell her to be very careful and not to rush into anything, as well as telling her to get right away from Johnny. @JacqMac 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @JacqMac I agree Elizabeth should take her time. The problem is that the situation at home with her father is forcing her to make rash decisions as she is eager to leave home. She needs a mother around who could guide her to a proper decision at the right time for her. @JacqMac (edited) 6y
See All 13 Comments
Andrew65 @EadieB I think I‘d be telling Elizabeth to move over to Ireland where she has the best mum she ever had! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I‘m worried about Eileen‘s health. She must be the person from the short page in the front. I‘m still wondering what Aisling and Elizabeth are upset about. @JacqMac (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Does either have an affair with the other‘s man? 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I don‘t know. I‘m not sure that I can picture Elizabeth with Tony now that Aisling has told her about all of his problems. Maybe Aisling would seek some attention from Henry as Aisling is lacking attention from Tony. @JacqMac 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s a possibility. Could Johnny be involved? 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I can see Aisling getting involved with Johnny if she comes to visit Elizabeth. I can see Elizabeth getting upset with Aisling for getting involved with Johnny. I can also see the pleasure Johnny would get in making Elizabeth jealous thereby making Henry not to happy. Sounds like it could be one big mess if that were to happen.@jacqMac (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB That is my fear about what could happen! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 That would definitely explain the look that they gave each other. @JacqMac 6y
JacqMac @EadieB @Andrew65 I would tell Aisling to leave too, but I have a secret hope that Elizabeth has a happy marriage. I know, I know. Probably not. She does need a mother. She should have stayed in Ireland from the beginning, (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @JacqMac I‘m surprised she has never ever considered going to live in Ireland. I too hope she has a happy marriage and possibly think she could do, I just hope she hasn‘t jumped into a relationship as a knee jerk with the first person to come along after Johnny. @EadieB 6y

rubyslippersreads I‘m way behind! Will try to catch up soon. 😊 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @JacqMac Surprised how George perked up with Aisling‘s visit. Can‘t believe that Elizabeth went thru with abortion without telling Johnny anything about baby. Glad that Aisling was there for support. Aisling is not too impressed with how Johnny treats Elizabeth. Sad to see Violet in hospital. Sounds like Alzheimer‘s. Can‘t believe Violet stabbed Harry and they had to confine her. Wedding took place - Not liking Shay Ferguson. (edited) 6y

EadieB @Andrew65 Are you done section 4? 6y
Andrew65 @rubyslippersreads We will discuss with you whenever you post! 👍 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yes, just didn‘t want to spoil it for anyone that hasn‘t. Plenty of action in that section and a few surprise. I still feel Aisling will regret that marriage. We were right about that abortion but fancy getting a Catholic to help. 😱🙈 (edited) 6y
Andrew65 Hadn‘t thought about Alzheimer‘s @EadieB 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I marked it spoiler right away but had to make some changes and I must have hit the wrong button. I think Elizabeth told Aisling that it wasn‘t a baby yet in order to make Aisling feel better. How about the lady at the house who has had 3 abortions. I think that made Elizabeth feel better. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 They didn‘t use that term then. They would refer to it as senility. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB She was lucky that she wasn‘t arrested or that there weren‘t complications. Had a feeling we would end up with the abortion route. 😢 I do wonder what is ahead for Elizabeth, her life is a bit of a car crash at the moment. I really do think she should live in Ireland. It is where her heart is and where the people that really care about her live. (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 She definitely needs to get away from Johnny. Elizabeth just puts up with his cheating with the socialite. Elizabeth is selling herself so short. How is she going to be sure that she won‘t get pregnant again. She definitely should go back to Ireland. Someone needs to protect her from that loser Johnny. I‘m not sure about Aisling‘s marriage either. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Agree totally. Just as easy to get pregnant, the hope and prey method doesn‘t work as she has already seen! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Tony‘s mother seems to be a problem for Aisling. She will definitely have mother-in-law problems. I wonder if Tony‘s friends will be a problem in their marriage too. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB And not only them, but I think Tony will prove to be a problem once he has got his way! A marriage made in hell I think. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Seems that way to me. I think he will be a bit too controlling for Aisling. He‘ll be out with his friends most nights and expect her to sit home and wait for him. 6y

And the abortion. And poor Violet. I don‘t think she was a good mom, but it‘s heartbreaking to see her like that. @EadieB @Andrew65 6y
EadieB @JacqMac I don‘t think Aisling‘s marriage will go too well at all. I didn‘t like Tony‘s friend, Shay, either. If it‘s any indication Shay being a drunk, I have a feeling that Tony is probably the same type. It is heartbreaking to see Violet that way even if we don‘t like her. But I feel sorry for Elizabeth the most as she needs to get away from Johnny. Let‘s see what the next section brings. Hopefully things will get better. @Andrew65 (edited) 6y
JacqMac @EadieB I feel terrible for Elizabeth. I think things will get worse before they get better. Lol @Andrew65 6y
EadieB @JacqMac Hopefully she will meet someone nice so she can leave Johnny and have some happiness for herself. @Andrew 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB That would be good. @JacqMac 6y

This is the book I‘m currently reading with @JacqMac and @Andrew65 for a Buddy Read. I‘m enjoying it very much. If you have never read Maeve Binchy, you should. She is a great storyteller.

JacqMac That‘s why she‘s one of my top 5 authors. I miss her. 6y
Andrew65 @JacqMac I agree, she tells great stories and gives you a great feel for life in small town Ireland. 6y

Have you finished the third section? How is the story progressing for you? Any good or bad themes, or any thing you love or that is annoying you? Any thoughts what will happen now, or any other comments about the book so far.

Please put any comments under spoilers so as not to spoil the book for anyone.

EadieB @Andrew65 @JacqMac I have finished 3rd section. I‘m not liking Johnny Stone and was really disappointed in Elizabeth when she let him in her bed when they were held up because of the bad rain storm. Also didn‘t like Tony Murray‘s comments to Aisling during her job interview. How could Violet forget her daughter‘s birthday? Not nice that Johnny wouldn‘t come to Elizabeth‘s father‘s birthday dinner. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Don‘t forget the spoiler. 😊 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Totally agree with you about Johnny Stone, and why was she even with you when he wouldn‘t go for dinner at her dad‘s 50th. And what a negative black hole her dad is too! Yes why would Aisling look at Tony Murray after that interview! Hardly a positive influence for Elizabeth feel so sorry for her. She needs to go and live in Ireland. (edited) 6y

EadieB @Andrew65 Now she thinks she his having Johnny‘s baby. Stupid girl! At least Aisling is coming to England. maybe Elizabeth will go back to Ireland with Aisling. 6y
JacqMac Not yet, I‘ll be back later. 😊 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Hopefully so, but that will be difficult if she is pregnant and then what is she going to do? Johnny Stone won‘t stand beside her. This book has really grown on me during the last two sections, wasn‘t totally sure at the beginning, Both Elizabeth and Aisling seem to be stuck in their life and be seen to making poor decisions. 6y
Andrew65 @JacqMac See you when you get there. 😊👍 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Well Elizabeth definitely needs to get away from her depressed dad. I‘m thinking that the girls go back to Ireland. Johnny follows and gets interested in Aisling and that‘s what comes between Aisling and Elizabeth. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB interesting theory. I‘m not sure I could see Johnny following but I could be totally wrong on that. Johnny could still come between them when Aisling is in England. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 He did say he wanted to go to Ireland with Elizabeth but she nixed that because they were not married. Maybe Aisling and Johnny do start to like each other in England and when Elizabeth tells him she is going back to Ireland then he may want to follow. Maybe Elizabeth and Johnny get married before going to Ireland because of the baby. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Do you think Johnny would marry her? 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Yes I do! He might lose his job if he doesn‘t. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I can still see him not marrying her and rejecting her totally or trying to get her a back street abortion. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Can he lose his job if he is a partner? 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Mr. Worsky and his lady friend were keeping an eye out for Elizabeth and her relationship with Johnny and they would certainly apply pressure on him. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Very sad to have ended up like this. Not sure I see where it heads from this - marriage, single mother, back street abortion. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I know it is sad. I was expecting better things for Elizabeth. She has much promise. Will be interesting to see what road she takes. It‘s not fully confirmed yet so she might get lucky. The book is really getting me hooked for sure. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I don‘t think she‘ll have a lucky escape, unfortunately. Abortion is my fear! Fear heartily sorry for her, she can‘t even turn to her mum! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Abortion - I hope not! Might not be too safe in that time period. Her mother is too engrossed in her own life. I think Violet will realize that the grass isn‘t any greener where she is now. The problem with affairs is that you find out after you do all the damage that you are the real problem. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yes her mum still doesn‘t seem happy. I wonder if something happened to her prior to getting married. Did she get pregnant sonthey had to marry? 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Elizabeth was trying to talk to her dad about that but he wasn‘t saying much. He said that the baby made Violet happy but he didn‘t say that he liked having the baby too. Very cold her dad is but that is a possibility that they had to get married. Could be the first thing that Violet noticed was her husband was not so excited about Elizabeth coming into their lives. Then it was all downhill from there. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB It was that conversation that made me think about a pregnancy causing a wedding. He really didn‘t want to talk about it. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Her dad is a real downer to be around. I don‘t blame Violet for leaving but she should have done so early on instead of now leaving her daughter to take care of him. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Surprised she didn‘t put him under the patio! 😂 Yes he is a real downer! I wonder why she still isn‘t happy though. Not fair on the daughter. 6y
JacqMac I‘m so sucked into the story now! I think Johnny is horrible. I think violet should have taken Elizabeth with her at the very least. If she couldn‘t stay with him why would she leave her daughter? I‘m interested to see what happens when Aisling arrives. I don‘t think Johnny is going to marry her. @Andrew65 @EadieB 6y
EadieB @JacqMac Johnny is horrible. I wish Elizabeth would give up on him. It would have been better if Violet left when Elizabeth was younger but for Elizabeth to move away when she is attending university would be too disruptive also with her job. I hope Aisling will help to make her feel better about her situation. I don‘t think Johnny is the marrying type either. 6y
Andrew65 @JacqMac I know, she has done a good job of sucking you into the story the further you get into this book! Don‘t get me started on Johnny, wrong on so many levels! I think Violet wanted Elizabeth with her but she wouldn‘t leave her father. But Violet should really have insisted. Johnny just isn‘t the marrying sort and a sorry marriage if he did. @EadieB Violet should have left when Elizabeth was still in Ireland. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @JacqMac I agree that when Elizabeth was in Ireland would have been a good time but with all the bombing going on where could she have gone. Did she know Harry at that time? I suppose the timing may not have been good. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Obviously the timing would not have been good during the war, and may not have been possible. I‘m sure they were having an affair during this time. @JacqMac 6y
JacqMac @Andrew65 @EadieB I‘m pretty sure they were having the affair while she was in Ireland, too. 6y

Please put comments as spoilers so as not to spoil other‘s enjoyment?

EadieB @Andrew65 @JacqMac @rubyslippersreads @Reviewsbylola I have finished section 2. If something happens to Elizabeth‘s father then I think she will go back to Ireland. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I‘m surprised she hasn‘t gone back for a holiday or even for the wedding. I think she should go back, not exactly got a lot in England for her. Her father does seem to be holding her back. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I liked Elizabeth‘s thoughts about Violet leaving her dad: Aunt Eileen and Monica‘s mom were not always happy with their husbands but they coped with things. Life was not meant to be easy. Shows how selfish Violet is and only thinks about her own happiness. 6y
See All 15 Comments
JacqMac @EadieB @Andrew65 Violet is so awful. And her dad is so depressing. Elizabeth is very grown up. I think in those times someone from London was seen as more civilized than someone from tiny town Ireland. But that really isn‘t the case. I‘m wondering what comes between the two girls? 6y
Andrew65 @JacqMac It does come across how selfish Violet is, and agree about how depressive her father is! Interesting to see how this develops. @EadieB 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @JacqMac There does seem to be some tension between Elizabeth and Aisling in the last paragraph on that page before Part One. Wonder what that is all about! I guess we just have to read on! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB That is an Interesting last sentence. Whatever happened? @JacqMac 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @JacqMac I guess we should move on to section 3 so we can soon find out 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB 😂 That‘s one way to do it. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Yes it is and besides it‘s already tomorrow for you! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB It is but too tired to take it on yet. 6y

JacqMac @EadieB @Andrew65 I‘m trying to finish a library book before I get back to it. But I‘m looking forward to it. 6y

Here‘s the schedule for the #MaeveBinchyBuddyRead of #LightAPennyCandle over the course of the next week. Very uneven sections (due to the length of the chapters). We will look to have some informal discussion at the end of each day and into the next day.

As you can see my book is a very old version, one of my books that has been on the bookshelf the longest!
Anyone welcome to join! 😊
Published in 1983 and this was Maeve Binchy‘s first novel!

Andrew65 @HookedonBooks @CarolynM Have tagged you in in case want to see the discussion for nostalgia purposes. 6y

Andrew65 @EadieB I‘m struggling to think where we got it from but most probably was. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Looks like a paperback. I‘ve never seen that cover! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB It is a Paperback. It looks like the original Coronet Books Paperback cover. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I had separated my book into different days and you picked the exact places that I picked! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Phew, means I split it up as best as I could. The last section is the longest. 6y
EadieB @andrew65 Yes I think those choices were the best. 6y
CarolynM Thanks. Not sure how many details I remember, but I'll definitely follow the discussion 6y
Andrew65 @CarolynM The discussion may trigger some memories. 😊 6y
JacqMac My copy is pretty old too. It‘s from 1992, though. It‘s a little yellowed and cracked, but I think it can handle one more read. Lol 6y
JacqMac And I just realized tomorrow is Friday. It has been a crazy week! 6y
Andrew65 @JacqMac I know the feeling. Tempus Fugit! 6y
Andrew65 Have you finished the first section? What are your initial thoughts about the book? If we put any comments under a spoiler alert so we don‘t spoil the book for anyone. @JacqMac @EadieB @rubyslippersreads @Reviewsbylola (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @JacqMac @rubyslippersreads @Reviewsbylola I have finished the first section. I‘m liking the book very much. It‘s interesting the different cultures between England and Ireland whereas, England seems more formal and Ireland more laid back. The religious differences are interesting too. The Catholics of Ireland and their concern for Elizabeth to be baptized reminded me of my Catholic upbringing. Sean‘s death was hard on his family. 6y
JacqMac @EadieB @Andrew65 @rubyslippersreads @Reviewsbylola I finished, too. I was also raised a catholic and in a small town. That church had so much power. I‘m glad to be free of it. I really don‘t like Violet. Maybe that will change. This is a reread for me, but it was a long time ago. I remember bits and pieces as I go along. Enjoying it as always. :) 6y
EadieB @JacqMac I don‘t attend the Catholic Church anymore either. Too controlling and guilt ridden. Nice to be free from that! I agree Violet doesn‘t seem too nice. I think she is an unhappy person. She is not in love with her husband and speaking of him, I wonder what has happened to him. @Andrew65 @rubyslippersreads @Reviewsbylola (edited) 6y
Andrew65 Yes Violet doesn‘t come out of this well! Not sure how much of a mothering instinct there is there, wonder if anything happened to her dad. Also assuming she won‘t go back to England and I wonder why this will be. The laid back nature of Ireland comes across strongly in her books. Out and out Church of England for me (blame Henry VIII) so always find the power of the Catholic Church a surprise. @JacqMac @EadieB @rubyslippersreads @Reviewsbylola 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 You don‘t think Elizabeth will go back to England? Does sound like it from the prologue. @JacqMac @rubyslippersreads @Reviewsbylola (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB My book didn‘t have a prologue? I just seemed given it was a Maeve Binchy book it would take place in Ireland. Perhaps she goes back and can‘t settle and misses her friends? @rubyslippersreads @Reviewsbylola @JacqMac 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Mine wasn‘t a real prologue - just one short page before Part One. Both Aisling and Elizabeth are visiting a coroner‘s court and they seem to be dressed in black. Possibly Elizabeth‘s mother or father died? I would agree that most of the book will take place in Ireland. @JacqMac @rubyslippersreads @Reviewsbylola (edited) 6y
JacqMac @EadieB @Andrew65 I remember where Elizabeth lives and a little bit of why, but I‘m not too clear on it. I‘ll refrain from commenting on that part. Lol (edited) 6y
EadieB @JacqMac @Andrew65 interesting! I‘m sure we will find out in future sections. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks for this. I have an ebook and a physical book of it. This one page section is in the physical book but not the ebook - I am interchanging between the two. How bizarre! Although it does not give too much of a clue (now I‘ve read it 😊) about whether that is Ireland or England. I wondered if it was Aisling‘s mother. @Reviewsbylola @rubyslippersreads @JacqMac (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Could be an Irish court as it says ‘no great raised bench with wigged judges.‘ @JacqMac 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB True, but do the judges in a coroner‘s court wear wigs? 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Trying to find something on google. I think they wore them in Northern Ireland but banned them around 2004. So I doubt they wore them in Southern Ireland. @JacqMac (edited) 6y
JacqMac @EadieB @Andrew65 I assumed it was Aisling‘s mom. I don‘t know why. 6y
Andrew65 @JacqMac That was my initial instinct too. @eadieb 6y

Pickpick

I read this when I was 16? I loved the friendship between Aisling and Elizabeth, and it taught me a lot about Catholic guilt (I was COE, but one of my best friends at the time, who 20+ years later still is, was Catholic). I made my book group read this last year and they ripped it to shreds 😂. I blame the covers, not MB! This one was kind of pretty, but sooo 80s. The titles were always in shiny lettering and often in gold. So pastel. So mumsy 😂

rubyslippersreads I love this book, no matter what cover it has. 😀 8y

My #favbookishfriendship is Elizabeth and Aisling from Light a Penny Candle. Behold the 1982 copy I stole from my mom! This is the first book I read that made me think about friendships, specifically between women, and how they last and how they change. And in the end it taught me that we all need our female friends for things even our husbands can't give us. 💜🕯#augustphotochallenge #augustofpages
