I so miss Litsy! I got a new phone, and Litsy doesn't meet the latest requirements to be on the Android play store. Just got on here via the web version, but this was always a phone activity for me. Sorry to everyone who has tagged me in the past couple of months. Thanks to everyone who has hosted fun readalongs, viewing parties, and holiday activities. I hope Litsy is available on Android in the future. Tagged my current NF read.

AllDebooks That is so annoying. Litsy is the only app I regularly check on my Android phone. Good to see you back x 13mo

As America gets set to commemorate it‘s independence on the 4th it‘s difficult to be as joyful in our celebrations when only half its people truly have freedom, liberty and justice.

Happy belated America‘s birthday! My 4th plans got disrupted early Saturday morning due to a family medical emergency. Ended up spending much of the weekend in/out of the hospital with my family, who were also staying with me. Thankfully they are on the mend and the outcome is best case scenario; should be released today. Feeling very grateful, and all of the doctors and nurses were amazing! Looking forward to some relaxation and reading tonight.

Events looked so grim for Washington‘s troops in the fall of 1776, I found myself thinking, “How do we end up winning this thing?” McCullough‘s book explores a great victory made possible by a series of small miracles. While there‘s luck involved in weather and timing, however, we see there is a super-strength earned and achieved when you have good leaders that lead by example and keep you walking one step at a time, in the dark, across the ice.

1776 is a book about two groups of men trying to solve a conflict with projectiles and bayonets. It doesn't mention slavery except in passing and Native Americans get barely a glance, which feels incomplete at best. I'm more interested in the "why" than in the battle details, but reading about the struggles, uncertainty, and disillusionment in the beginning of the U.S. while our democracy is under such threat now was somewhat comforting.

SamAnne I‘ve been on the fence about reading this one. Appreciate your review. 4y
ImperfectCJ @SamAnne I think for someone who enjoys the nitty-gritty of battle, this would be an excellent book, and I am glad to have read it. It's just not what I'm looking for right now (although I rather guiltily welcomed that little shot of patriotism). 4y

I don't read very much nonfiction, but I was hoping to learn things from this book that I didn't get from my American history class in high school. While the pacing was good and McCullough does well narrating his own work, he didn't really include any new information about the part of the Revolutionary War that took place during 1776.

While not as good as his previous John Adam's, McCullough shows a mastery of the revolutionary period. His ability to keep many points simultaneously in the forefront is impressive.

BookNAround My husband was reading this on a plane coming home from London. His British seatmate leaned over and asked what he was reading. When hubby told him the title, his comment was, “Not a good year for us.” Hubby responded with “Pretty good year for us, though.” LOL! 5y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ McCullough presents a one-year snippet of the Revolutionary War‘s military movements and big players, but offers little in terms of politics. I appreciate his idea and approach, but my US history is embarrassing at best, and I need the bigger picture. Not his fault, though. This is a great read.

PS. The audio recording quality was less than stellar and I wish I‘d gone with print.

▶️🎧 #1776 Seems like an appropriate read given the 🇺🇸 holiday tomorrow, and a good companion to Alexander Hamilton.

This morning‘s workout:
25 mins of legs (audiobook)
101 floors on the stairclimber (music)

Now, grabbing a few peaceful moments before getting my son‘s from childcare. They‘ve been at each other‘s throats this morning and driving me bats.

Hope everyone has a productive day including a little “me time.” 💚

I finished this book up outside this morning. Of course I had to do battle with the pollen first. (So. Much. Pollen. )

This is a good book. It‘s meant for nerds who like the minutiae of history and may not be for everyone. As the name states, it only covers the turbulent year of 1776. It is peppered with recollections of average soldiers/citizens taken from letters and journals, as well as those of the more well known. Good stuff!

Who am I to rate a Pulitzer Prize winning book. This is a very readable, entertaining, and interesting history of the American Revolution in 1776. Little is mentioned of the declaration other than the effect on the morale of the American Army. This book focuses on the military campaigns of that year. From the British withdrawal from Boston, the Americans failed attempt to take New York, to the Crossing of the Delaware.I couldn‘t put the book down.

Much like this painting by Mort Kuntsler, McCullough seeks to portray the events of 1776 in an accurate light. Not only that, he give the British equal attention! *gasp* WHADDYA MEAN WASHINGTON DIDN‘T SAVE AMERICA WHILE RIDING ON THE BACK OF AN EAGLE!? This book can get boring, because of the detailed battle scenes. Overall, I loved this one. (not as much as John Adams...)Even if you have a casual interest in history, you GOTTA read McCullough!

Amiable I love McCullough--he's the best. 6y
AshleyHoss820 @Amiable McCullough and Joseph Ellis are my go-to historians! My next presidential biography to read is about James Madison. Lynne Cheney (Dick Cheney‘s wife) wrote it and I‘m hoping I like it! I‘m afraid I‘ve been spoiled by my two favorites! 😄 6y
Amiable I'm not a fan of Joseph Ellis--I find him dry and stuffy. After McCullough my go-tos are Doris Kearns Goodwin, Ron Chernow and David Pietrusza. (edited) 6y

This paragraph basically sums up the entire book. I've wanted to read this book for quite some time and I'm glad I finally got around to it. It catalogs the events in 1776, the first full year the colonies fought for independence. The focus is on George Washington, Henry Knox and Nathaniel Greene. I would recommend it. It's a good jumping off point if you want to dive deeper into United States history.
