The Truth | Terry Pratchett
The denizens of Ankh-Morpork fancy they've seen just about everything. But then comes the Ankh-Morpork Times, struggling scribe William de Worde's upper-crust, newsletter turned Discworld's first paper of record. An ethical joulnalist, de Worde has a proclivity for investigating stories -- a nasty habit that soon creates powerful enemies eager to stop his presses. And what better way than to start the Inquirer, a titillating (well, what else would it be?) tabloid that conveniently interchanges what's real for what sells. But de Worde's got an inside line on the hot story concerning Ankh-Morpork's leading patrician Lord Vetinari. The facts say Vetinari is guilty. But as William de Worde learns, facts don't always tell the whole story. There's that pesky little thing called the truth ...

Pratchett's satirical look at news, politics and “the truth“ seems frighteningly representative of today's world, despite the fact that it was written a quarter-century ago and involves some hilariously ridiculous situations.

At the same time that William de Worde & his crew of dwarves invent the 1st newspaper on the Disc, Lord Vetinari gets imprisoned for attempted murder.

Every time I read this 1, it goes up on my list of faves. This satirical look at both newspapers, what the truth is, & who gets to tell it remains alarmingly relevant, & William‘s confrontation w/ his father was amazing. I would have loved more of the dwarves! & Otto!🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

TheSpineView There was a lot going on in this book. Loved the various ideas that Pratchett presented in the book. My favorite was the role of media as it pertains to the government. 3w

TheSpineView @julesG It did age well. I think some things will be timeless. 3w
kwmg40 I really enjoyed this one. Coincidentally, I was reading The Golden Road by L.M. Montgomery for #kindredspiritsbuddyread and in it, the main characters start a newspaper, so it was fun to compare! As others have mentioned, the themes of the book are still very relevant today. 2w
BookmarkTavern It‘s a little alarming how well it‘s aged! Journalism and what it owes to the people, versus how to work with the government and law enforcement, it‘s a narrow line to walk. Vimes and William‘s banter remains probably my favorite part of this book. And that final confrontation with William‘s dad! I forgot just how much that moved me. (edited) 2w
julesG @BookmarkTavern Your review reminded me, I loved Otto and the antics about him turning to dust so often, but not giving up his profession. 2w

I have to say, I think this is my favorite Discworld book so far. I liked the characters in this one, and the plot was ingenious. Even though it has been over 20 years since this book was published, it is still revelant today. Of course, with Pratchett's signature humor, it was pure fun to read. 4.5⭐️

Ruthiella This was the first Pratchett I read. Loved it! 👍 3w

Even better the second time.
Sharp satire that never forgets to be understanding about humanity's flaws, and their potential for growth.
Fantastical shenanigans certainly, but between William de Worde's epiphanies and Mr Pin and Mr Tulip's final reewards, this one hits hard between the laughs. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Undoubtedly this particular Discworld book ranks high in my affection because it has a decent amount of Vimes sprinkled in, and the tone of the confrontations between him and de Worde show the character of both men admirably.
Side note: It tickles me how often Vetinari ends up in the damsel in distress role in some fashion in the Discworld series overall given his fearsome reputation.
8mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 I think Terry had his heart in the right place including all manner of people and other beings in this story and his picture of the grand city of Ankh-Morpork, but given its original publication date of 2000, it's not surprising that the characterization of the homeless group including a disabled man and various people with glibly described or undiagnosed mental illness played for laughs feels insensitive nearly a quarter of a century later. 8mo
julesG I think TP was aware of his glibness. It feels done on purpose to me. 8mo

"The Truth Shall Make Ye Fret" indeed! I think the most surprising part of this particular Discworld book was how tightly plotted it felt this felt. The pros and cons of 'freedom of the press' and journalistic ethics are debated alongside colourful expansions on grimmer realities: homelessness and privilege, specisim/racism, political corruption, criminals of various stripes that have the potential for redemption, and may or may not seize it.

My first completed #NutsInMay book and my first foray into the Discworld! 😃 Excellent satire about the power and vulnerability of the press. Published 20 years ago, the novel illustrates that “Fake News” is not new or unique to the 21st century. Funny and inventive, as I expected but also with a lot of complex subtext, which I didn‘t anticipate but appreciate.

Soubhiville Ok this is a favorite of mine. I love the new characters. I love the twisty nature of the beginning of news reporting. The invention of the printing press. And the rollicking plot kept me turning pages. One of the best Discworld books for me. 💛 4y

Soubhiville Plus, vegetables shaped like... other things. 🤣 that‘s a fun rabbit hole to fall into on the internet. 4y
julesG @Soubhiville 🤣🤣🤣 I can only imagine the depth of this particular rabbit hole. 😂😂😂 4y
khooliha Of all the new characters I love Otto best of all. I listened to the Radio Morpork about this book and they called William one of the most interesting characters and I have to say I just don't see it. I think he could have been interesting, but I didn't think the book got into his interiority until pretty late. 4y
khooliha Honestly, this felt a bit like practice for Going Postal but maybe what I'm feeling is just how Ankh-Morpork books are going to be written going forward. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @khooliha It‘s the first book of his Industrial Age sub-grouping, so I‘m thinking they will all have a similar vibe....sorta like Going Postal 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Soubhiville I loved this one too...the fine line between the Truth and things just made up (Fake News) and what people will believe if they see it in print, because “they” wouldn‘t print it if it wasn‘t true (reminded of anything on the internet) and a subgroup of elites trying to take over the government and then more or less having it hushed up and let go.....well that all seemed remarkably timely to me. 4y
Soubhiville @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I agree it does feel remarkably timely considering when it was written! 4y
BookmarkTavern @khooliha I can understand that. For me, a character who goes against what his family wants of him to become a writer? I related way too hard to that, so I‘ve always had a soft spot for William. 4y
BookmarkTavern So Vetinari‘s little speech to William about people not wanting to know new things? That immediately made me think of the echo chambers we can build for ourselves on social media sites and with what news we consume. I know I‘m definitely guilty of that on Facebook. 4y
khooliha @ozma.of.oz I think he has a strong starting point! It's just that he struck me as pretty swept along by the plot. It's a very plotty book. I don't remember does he cameo going forward, or is it mostly Otto or Sacharissa? 4y
BookmarkTavern @khooliha I think we see him at least once more? I‘m not 100% sure about that. 4y

What a great Pratchett to start the year with, the plot is crazy as always, but the subtext about the “Truth Will Set Ye Free”, faked news, those in power trying to subvert the legal leader for their own benefit, and if they are doing it they must be right and everyone else wrong....seemed on point when I finished it last night before election returns started coming in, and even more so today. What a day!

I love Otto, but coming back to how vampires are handled in Ankh-Morpork is starting off a little painful - it's one thing to apply coming out language to some of the undead but then talk about how a vampire's only recourse is to assimilate into “normal“ society? It hurts.

William de Worde invents the newspaper and exposes dastardly political shenanigans to replace Lord Vetinari as Patrician.

Not perhaps Pratchett's funniest but plenty of wordplay and wry observations about the world.

Zoes_Human It did have many excellent observations. In particular the following has always stuck with me:

“Insofar as he'd formed any opinion of her, it was that she suffered from misplaced gentility and the mistaken belief that etiquette meant good breeding. She mistook mannerisms for manners.”
