Women Who Read Are Dangerous
Women Who Read Are Dangerous | Stefan Bollman
37 posts | 10 read | 55 to read
What is it about a woman reading that has captivated hundreds of artists over the centuries? Stefan Bollmann s "Women Who Read Are Dangerous" explores this popular subject in more than 70 artworksdrawings, paintings, photographs, and printsby iconic artists such as Henri Matisse, Edward Hopper, Suzanne Valadon, August Sander, Rembrandt, and many more. As the book s provocative title indicates, a woman reading was once viewed as radical. In chapters, such as Intimate Moments and The Search for Oneself, Bollmann profiles how a woman with a book was once seen as idle or suspect and how women have gained autonomy through reading over the years. Bollmann offers intelligent and engaging commentary on each work of art in "Women Who Read Are Dangerous," telling us who the subject is, her relationship to the artist, and even what she is reading. With works ranging from a 1333 Annunciation painting of the angel Gabriel speaking to the Virgin Mary, book in hand, to twentieth-century works, such as a stunning photograph of Marilyn Monroe reading "Ulysses," this appealing survey provides a veritable slideshow of the many iterations of a woman and her booka compelling subject to this day. An excellent gift for graduates, teachers, or Mother s Day, this elegant book should appeal to anyone interested in art, literature, or women s history."

My reading this year hasn't been that 'intentional', and as a result I've probably read more white, male authors than planned. I really like this #readingwomenchallenge list of prompts, so think I'll get back on track by throwing myself into this one for 2019. Full details at https://www.readingwomenpodcast.com/reading-women-challenge-2019/

GatheringBooks oh we are doing a year of women reading women too in 2019! #WomenReadWomen2019 :) we will be having quarterly reading themes as well. :) 12mo
RachelO @GatheringBooks 👍I've been checking in on your travels on the blog this year, but too much stuff going on to officially commit. Will definitely try & join you for the 2019 themes tho 😊- you're looking at women authors from round the world? (edited) 12mo
GatheringBooks @RachelO yes!! that‘s the idea! :) we are featuring female voices exclusively on our website for the entire year. :) 12mo

Getting my list together for #readingwomenchallenge2019, here‘s how it‘s shaping up so far. I‘m probably going to start with #10, as it‘s the category I‘m least excited about.

#readingwomenchallenge

LoverofLit I'm also struggling with that topic. I'll have to check out your pick! I definitely want audio for it I think. 11mo
Jillybeane @LoverofLit Audio! That‘s a great idea! 11mo
Rissreads @LoverofLit @Jillybeane How about 40 autumns by Nina Willner? It tells the story of 5 women from one family separated by the Berlin Wall and one of them is an Olympic athlete. It‘s a fantastic read! 11mo
LoverofLit @Rissreads That sounds right up my alley. Thank you! 11mo
Jillybeane @Rissreads I‘ll check it out, thanks for the suggestion! 11mo

And both of @thereadingwomen were at the Min Jin Lee talk. Good thing because I read Pachinko for one of the items on their challenge - it counts either for immigration or Reading Women shortlist for 2017! Also at the talk - two women from my in-person book club. Pachinko is our read for June.

The beginning of this book talks about attitudes towards women reading through the centuries. When not an act of piety, it was often portrayed as corrupting or frivolous. What were those women doing alone and what were they thinking?! If you want to know one of the fears people had, Google Pierre-Antoine Baudouin's painting The Reader. The rest of the book features artwork and on the opposing page a description and an analysis of it. #boutofbooks

CoffeeCatsBooks Full color and the artwork is all of women reading from the 1400's - 1900's. Darn your word limit, Litsy! 2y

I love hanging out at Chaucer's Bookstore in Santa Barbara. Being surrounded by all these beautiful books from floor to ceiling puts a silly grin on my face every time. And unlike my house, every pile of books you see here is in order and categorized by title, author and genre. So grateful for indie bookstores. Rock on, Chaucer's! 😊👍🏻 📚 #getindie #chaucersbookstore
