Women who read are dangerous
Women who read are dangerous | Stefan Bollmann
42 posts | 14 read | 60 to read
"This book brings together a selection of paintings, drawings, prints and photographs for women reading by a diverse range of artists from the Middle Ages to the present day. Each image is accompanied by a commentary explaining the context in which it was created - who the reader is, her relationship with the artist, and what she was reading. This book will appeal to book lovers and anyone interested in the depiction of women in art."--BOOK JACKET.

Some of these works of art are really beautiful. It was a fun idea to compile these images from various time periods on the same topic into a book. The diversity of the subject was limited to age. It would have been more interesting if the author had included more current artwork with subjects of women of color and women of different religions besides Christianity.

#ForeverNovember Day 12: 2019 was my year of reading only #Women authors, and I have done a round-up of my progress and my key take-aways from this experience as can be seen above. More here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-leR

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I tend to mostly read women authors, not purposely though! 3y

I enjoyed reading this book and discovering beautiful paintings and photographs of women reading.
However, I would have liked more context about the art. Also more about the evolution of reading for women. It would also have been interesting to have more contemporary works, with thus more female artists.

My reading this year hasn't been that 'intentional', and as a result I've probably read more white, male authors than planned. I really like this #readingwomenchallenge list of prompts, so think I'll get back on track by throwing myself into this one for 2019. Full details at https://www.readingwomenpodcast.com/reading-women-challenge-2019/

GatheringBooks oh we are doing a year of women reading women too in 2019! #WomenReadWomen2019 :) we will be having quarterly reading themes as well. :) 5y
rockpools @GatheringBooks 👍I've been checking in on your travels on the blog this year, but too much stuff going on to officially commit. Will definitely try & join you for the 2019 themes tho 😊- you're looking at women authors from round the world? (edited) 5y
GatheringBooks @RachelO yes!! that‘s the idea! :) we are featuring female voices exclusively on our website for the entire year. :) 5y

Getting my list together for #readingwomenchallenge2019, here‘s how it‘s shaping up so far. I‘m probably going to start with #10, as it‘s the category I‘m least excited about.

LoverofLit I'm also struggling with that topic. I'll have to check out your pick! I definitely want audio for it I think. 5y
Jillybeane @LoverofLit Audio! That‘s a great idea! 5y
Rissreads @LoverofLit @Jillybeane How about 40 autumns by Nina Willner? It tells the story of 5 women from one family separated by the Berlin Wall and one of them is an Olympic athlete. It‘s a fantastic read! 5y
LoverofLit @Rissreads That sounds right up my alley. Thank you! 5y

And both of @thereadingwomen were at the Min Jin Lee talk. Good thing because I read Pachinko for one of the items on their challenge - it counts either for immigration or Reading Women shortlist for 2017! Also at the talk - two women from my in-person book club. Pachinko is our read for June.

The beginning of this book talks about attitudes towards women reading through the centuries. When not an act of piety, it was often portrayed as corrupting or frivolous. What were those women doing alone and what were they thinking?! If you want to know one of the fears people had, Google Pierre-Antoine Baudouin's painting The Reader. The rest of the book features artwork and on the opposing page a description and an analysis of it. #boutofbooks

CoffeeCatsBooks Full color and the artwork is all of women reading from the 1400's - 1900's. Darn your word limit, Litsy! 7y
