I won't say that I've been in a reading slump, but I will say that narrative hasn't been holding my attention very easily, lately. Perfect opportunity for working through some non-fiction.

*I'm not going to remember most of this, but this book has tons of fascinating tidbits and I imagine is a great reference when delving into Victorian literature.*

I had fun today searching around the house for the Jane goodies in my collection. (Meanwhile Chris and Bell fell asleep; they couldn't stand the excitement.)

Great reference! Very helpful for quickly getting the gist of an aspect of daily life in England in the 1800s. Many subjects - such as country life, the Church, marriage, and titles - are covered. It was interesting to learn the soup-to-nuts hierarchy of society, along with how each member of the peerage/aristocracy/gentry would be addressed. How very confusing to be a party hostess and attempt to get it all right!

From the country dance to the formal balls, dancing was a key way for society to interact. The early dances were groups of couples. Then, the "fast" set in town popularized the waltz, which was much more intimate. The gentleman put his arm around the lady's waist! Gasp!

The introduction of the waltz to the country figured heavily in The Nonesuch by Georgette Heyer.

Nothing is more irritating than reading a library book and finding that a previous reader has marked it all up. Grrr.

In honour of my birthday today, I'm posting a #birthdaychallenge This book was published in 1993, the year I was born. It's a great look at life in the 19th century, a time period I love reading about.

We recently got a new car and when the hubby opened the glove compartment today, the following conversation happened: Hubby - Ahem, WHY do we have books in here? Me - For reading? Hubby - Yes, but why? How do you read when you drive? Me - Well, duh, they are not for driving but in case I need to wait somewhere and don't already have a book with me. Hubby - That's crazy. Me - Pfff! Whatever! 😂😂😂
