I've always been a massive fan of Poe, so reading more of his work was great! I liked quite a few, especially Masque of the Red Death and The Fall of the House of Usher, others I wasn't keen on. As usual I adored his poetry and enjoyed rereading some of my favourites. Overall a chonky but darkly enjoyable collection!

I spent much of October and November reading these. I especially enjoyed Poe‘s poetry and the Cthulhu stories, but I haven‘t really touched them this month so I‘m taking off my currently reading list to start the year fresh. Maybe I‘ll finish them up next fall.

It's a lovely, cool fall day. The colors are starting to change. It makes it a good time to read a bit of Poe and earn some points for #TeamMonsterMash ! What is your favorite story by Poe? Mine is probably "The Pit and the Pendulum."

Day 17 of #21DaysofHorror
Although I had a fondness for The Raven from when I was in middle school, the story that made me fall in love with Poe was The Tell-Tale Heart. I vividly recall reading it for the first time in junior high & being struck by how unusual & intense it is. IMO there are few murder scenes that rival the one in this story & what an ending! Yet, my pick for today is not The Tell-Tale Heart, but a story that I keep coming back👇

vivastory to: The Black Cat. To me this macabre gem contains many elements of several of his famous works. To this day The Black Cat remains one of the bleakest stories that I have ever read, & one of the most compelling. (edited) 2y
Reggie I always think of MacBeth, the themes of guilt kinda synonymous with The Tell-Tale Heart. I‘ve never read any of his other stuff. Nice pick for day 17! 2y
Cathythoughts Oh there‘s some scary cats 😬😱 2y
vivastory @Reggie That's a great point about Macbeth. I like some of his poetry, too. The Conqueror Worm is especially memorable. 2y
vivastory @Cathythoughts It's an unsettling story🙀 2y

1) I always try to reread my favorite Poe stories around Halloween. I'm not sure I will this year, but I'll definitely watch the video (link below) of Gaiman reading The Raven.
2) I live in an apartment. I don't really get trick-or-treaters. Although sometimes I buy candy for theoretical trick-or-treaters & then I spend the week following Halloween in a sugar rush.

I know they say not to judge a book by its cover, but let's be honest - a book cover matters! I'm talking about actual books, btw, not the metaphor. Also very important? How it feels in my hands. Anyone else?
Not necessarily a Poe fan, but I almost bought this one on my last trip to the bookstore.

1&2) I can‘t really say I‘ve ever been scared from a book. But I also don‘t try to scare myself. I tend to like spending time with the creepy and uncanny, like Edgar Allan Poe‘s writing, and the evils of human nature like Shirley Jackson, or weird concepts like anything from Chuck Paulahnick.
3) I‘m not really sure if it‘s unpopular but I really like musicals like Little Shop of Horrors, Sweeney Todd, Repo: the Genetic Opera
#creepychristmas

AFrostCauseReads 4) Vampires. I loved the movie and show What We Do In The Shadows, Queen of the Damned, and all things Buffy, Trublood 3y

Nothing quite like some eerie Poe short stories on a rainy day. Stories read : The Mask of the Red Death, The Black Cat, The Raven, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Cask of Amontillado. (Only three of these were after October 1st for #scarathalon2020 and #cyoreadathon)
3 hours (30)+ themed stories (45)+ participation post (1)= 76pts for #TeamHarkness

StayCurious If you read three stories that fit into our theme, they would be 15 points each - were they supernatural at all? (I apologize, I don't know my Poe lol) - that would make your total 66 - let me know. 3y
StayCurious right 76 looks better - lol I can do math... 3y
AFrostCauseReads @StayCurious yes, the ones I read had supernatural elements. I redid the math, 76pts 👻 3y
