Maid
Maid | Nita Prose
A charmingly eccentric hotel maid discovers a guest murdered in his bed. Solving the mystery will turn her once orderly world upside down in this utterly original debut. "Smart, riveting, and deliciously refreshing . . . a murder mystery with tremendous heart."--Lisa Jewell, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Family Upstairs Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life's complexities all by herself. No matter--she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection. But Molly's orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what's happening, Molly's unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black--but will they be able to find the real killer before it's too late? A Clue-like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different--and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.

This book has been on my TBR forever it seems. It was a quick, good read. It‘s a “who done it” which I don‘t usually like-but this was a good one! I wasn‘t sure that I liked the way that the main character was portrayed at first, but I understand why it was written the way it was, especially at the end. I‘m glad I finally read this book. I understand that there are more in this series which I‘ll most likely read.

Took myself on a little mid-chore/errand lunch date and if there‘s a bakery next to the brewery, you might as well get dessert and keep the break going, right?!
I started this today and was enjoying it, but after a while it almost felt like the author was making fun of Molly, making her just TOO gullible and oblivious… I dunno but I put it aside and I‘m reading my creepy BOTM instead (and I eyed the attic hatch pretty hard just now 😅)

squirrelbrain I thought exactly that about Molly - I didn‘t much like the book as a result. 1mo
mcipher @squirrelbrain I‘m glad it‘s not just me! I‘ll probably finish it but don‘t think I‘ll read any more in the series 1mo

I liked this. It was hard to see Molly get used by all these people while completely misunderstanding what they were doing. Good ending.

I really liked the mystery of this and the unique perspective of the unfolding story from the eyes of Molly. Molly is socially awkward and thinks differently than others; this at times makes for some uncomfortable situations. However, it‘s the treatment of Molly by everyone else for most of the book that had me put the book down after a few chapters and walk away for a bit. Her treatment hit a bit too close to home for me. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️Molly also mentions an action she performs that had me gasping in shock. I‘m still not sure how I feel about it! Now to move onto book two for my IRL book club discussion! 4mo

This was a delightful book, and I love Molly.
But, I got so mad at how Molly was treated her whole life.
I look forward to reading book 2.

⭐️⭐️⭐️a quirky little who done it to pass the time between tomes. Nothing too serious or heavy. I enjoyed Molly, the maid. But this was riddled with stereotypes making it a little@less interesting in terms of characters. Except Molly.

As a mystery the book is good. As a book showing the world through the eyes of Molly, it‘s great. Molly reminded me of Eleanor Oliphant in many ways. Plenty of characters to love and loathe in this one.

I enjoyed this mix of murder mystery and feel-good up-lit. It has Eleanor Oliohant vibes with a socially awkward protagonist, but I found her annoying at times and the tone a little sentimental or almost condescending (to her) and she‘s portrayed as quite clueless. But overall an engaging feel-good story, the uplit part works better than the whodunnit given we know the culprits early on (notwithstanding the late twist). Love a matching bookmark!

As a mystery, this book is okay. As 280+ pages with Molly the maid, it is absolutely fantastic. I enjoyed seeing the world through Molly‘s eyes and thought that she was a wonderfully entertaining character, more than enough reason to keep reading to the end. She‘s also all the reason I need to read the sequel as well. Found family, murder, mystery, and a great cast of characters make for an enjoyable read.

Finished this morning ahead of Wednesday book club meeting. Endearing MC, interesting story even if it tied up a bit too neatly. Though there was a sequel published recently, I‘m content to let the story sit where it is.

As you see, I have plenty of #serieslove2024 and this is just the mysteries! It doesn‘t even include three books coming out this year that don‘t have covers yet.

Center square is also on my #readorbail list so it will be first.

I enjoyed this cozy mystery featuring Molly the Maid. It was fun and charming with great characters. I liked all the twists and turns, though I have to admit that some of the surprises revealed at the end made the story a bit implausible.

Fun and quirky murder mystery in a boutique hotel and starring a neurodivergent maid. I didn‘t expect the final twist to the story, which is good- but also thought the MC was possibly a bit cliche. Still was an enjoyable way to audiopuzzle away the afternoon.

I had mixed feelings about this one.
I liked that the author had written as someone Neurodiverse, however, it was like she had Googled autism traits and made the main character have every single one.
I didn't see the twist coming at the end. I'd say this was a firm 3 ⭐️

There is so much wrong with this book.

The neurodiversity rep is irresponsible and, frankly, a bit insulting. Molly the Maid doesn't feel like an actual person so much as a bunch of autistic clichés cobbled together with a dose of excessive perkiness.

There was a murder mystery buried somewhere, but we aren't really given any reason to care about it.

Irritating.

RaeLovesToRead @CSeydel I felt that the character of Molly was infantilised a bit, and her portrayal wasn't always consistent. I can see why people are annoyed about it. I can also see why people would enjoy it as a heartwarming novel about friendship too, I guess. Didn't work for me though 😔 1y

This was an interesting read with a twist or two along the way. The plot is a steady burn to an ending you could see coming but was so cleverly executed. Molly isnt the most likeable character to begin with but as you learn her story, you do start to feel for her and by the end I really liked her. The mystery itself was good though I had just about figured it out. A great mystery though. 3*

But unexpected friends unite with her to untangle the clues and find the murderer.

I enjoyed this quirky mystery, but have nothing to rave about.

Molly is a maid at a luxury boutique hotel. She has trouble understanding basic social cues and emotions, which sometimes leads to miscommunication and awkward encounters. But nothing compares to the day she finds the hotel's wealthiest guest dead. She is soon the main suspect and must rely on her friends at the hotel for help. But not everyone is as they seem to Molly!

The literary equivalent of Olive Garden (which is name dropped in this book, unsurprisingly): blandly, reliably enjoyable, but there are so many better options out there for literally anything you like in this book. This isn‘t a murder mystery so much as a story of awkward, perky Molly learning the True Meaning of Friendship. If the book isn‘t offensive, it is simply corny, lazy, and tone deaf.
