Maid | Nita Prose
A charmingly eccentric hotel maid discovers a guest murdered in his bed. Solving the mystery will turn her once orderly world upside down in this utterly original debut. "Smart, riveting, and deliciously refreshing . . . a murder mystery with tremendous heart."--Lisa Jewell, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Family Upstairs Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life's complexities all by herself. No matter--she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection. But Molly's orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what's happening, Molly's unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black--but will they be able to find the real killer before it's too late? A Clue-like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different--and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.

This was such a good book! Molly is a maid in a swanky hotel. She is very proud of her work, very meticulous. She is also lonely, her Gran has recently died. Then she finds a dead man in his room. Molly is able to notice details better than most, but has poor social skills. She tells these details to the police.Instead of accepting her help, she is accused and arrested. Friends she didn't realize she had step up to help her.September #doublespin

The Friends of my Library are holding their Fall Book Sale this weekend. And even though I have hundreds of books that I haven‘t read yet and, you know, work IN a library…. I still snuck in and bought 4 books. And then I snuck them into my house so my husband wouldn‘t see.

I am concerned about ableism in this book. I cannot put my finger on why, possibly because I do not know enough about the neurodivergent community, but there were things Molly the Maid (I actually liked the name and find it very cheery) did and didn't understand that was confusing.
I wish the last 2 chapters had been cut. It didn't do anything for the story and made things more muddled. Why is her defense lawyer suddenly a DA??

ChaoticMissAdventures Overall though I did enjoy the mystery, and enjoyed Molly herself I just will not be raving or recommending it to many. Reminded me a lot of 2w

Despite a slow start, I liked The Maid. I alternated on how I felt about Molly — sometimes I liked her, sometimes I felt bad for her, and other times I was annoyed by her. I‘m a person who trusts people too easily, and even I could see that Molly should not have trusted some of the people she did. There‘s a nice little twist I didn‘t see coming. Continued with Fox & I on my walk. #audiowalk

Boredom set in at work today, so I looked through my challenges and found I can use this one for #pop22 ~ A book with a quote from your favorite author on the cover or Amazon page. Also found out it‘s being made into a movie 🍿

It was evidently clear to me that Molly was neurodivergent/Autistic from the start. My question is was it the author‘s intention for Molly to be Autistic but instead dance around it by her seeming “quirky” or other characters calling her weird. It is important for there to be representation of Autistic characters in main stream stories but not their qualities being used as pitfalls of the character. This just gave me an ick factor of a mom of an

ncsufoxes Autistic child that I fiercely advocate for. I want the world to see him & others for their qualities as unique gifts that give them different insights into the world not something that people see as ways the world can take advantage of them because they read cues differently. Just my insight & wished that the author approached the character in a different manner. #booked2022, prompt: set in an inn. #bookspin 1mo

Molly, highly functioning maid on the spectrum works in a fancy hotel finds her job highly satisfying and befriends a rich guest, Giselle, who confides in Molly about her bereft life to Mr Black. Things take a turn when Molly finds Mr Black dead in his room. The ever clean, neat, and eager to please Molly finds herself tangled up in and arrested for his murder. This delightful story has one pulling for Molly just like we did for Amelia Bedelia.

I enjoyed this story about Molly the maid.

Molly sees the world in a unique way, has a hard time picking up on things like facial expressions and sarcasm, and is seen by others as a 'weirdo.'

When she finds a dead man in one of the hotel rooms where she works, life becomes interesting whether Molly wants it to or not.

Unpopular opinion.
1. I am bored, and literally do not care who killed the man.
2. The MC being unable to pick up on social cues is one thing, but it feels like the author is deliberately making her look stupid (some of the things she doesn't pick up on are really ridiculous), and I'm not okay with that kind of thing.
🤷
Sorry but not sorry. This is not for me.

kplovesbooks @Bren912 It's always been very hard for me to DNF a book, especially if it's super popular like this one, but life is just too short and there are way too many great books out there for me to waste my time being miserable reading something I don't like...so I have really stepped up my DNF game this year! 😁 Glad I did with this one here. 😤 1mo

When this first came out in January 2022, I knew I wanted to read it. Finally in July 2022, I was able to get a copy from my library. This book more than met my expectations. I loved it.

I think this book worked so well because of Molly's voice. I loved the way she saw the world and would be very interested in another book about her.

This is almost a pan. This book made me so uncomfortable because I don‘t understand how people didn‘t understand Molly was neurodivergent/on the autism spectrum. They were clearly taking advantage of her. Also, the police got so frustrated with her because she was so literal.

I sped this up to 2.15x speed to get through it. (I need 3 debuts for #BOTM)

Also, I don‘t understand how Molly was so clueless but then was so devious.. just, nope.

squirrelbrain I had the same misgivings as you, and didn‘t love it like others seem to do. 2mo

I found this book so interesting and I read through it so fast. This book is about Molly who is a maid at a high end hotel. She walks into a room to find a very powerful man dead in his room. Somehow the tables are turned and she is the one getting the fingers pointed at. That Molly was the one who committed the crime. I enjoyed that this books is from the perspective of somebody either with Asperger‘s or on the spectrum of something.

I enjoyed this book- finished it in a day! I would be curious to discuss it with neuro divergent refers. I liked the plot twists, the characters and the general story of a maid who discovers a dead body.

Avanders Oh you‘re finished now! 😄 I‘m glad you liked it… any thoughts you had on the neurodivergent representation are welcome! 3mo
Chrissyreadit @Avanders one thing I really, really appreciated was how Molly was under estimated- I see that a lot. And I know someone neuro divergent who was framed and spent two years in prison because he was not understood and did not know how to get better representation- so I really do think the author had some great perception. 3mo
Avanders Wow! That‘s awful. :( But yeah I completely agree about the book … and I love how it (that underestimation) was used. ☺️ 3mo
See All 8 Comments
Chrissyreadit @Avanders I Also so enjoyed her way of relating. I do think friendships are challenging depending on skills- BUT I also think that gifted and neuro divergent is a huge challenge for developing friendships. And I see a lot of gifted neuro divergent people prefer work that is specific, predictable and repetitive. 3mo
Avanders Absolutely. It‘s so hard for neurodivergent children to even *relate* to non-neurodivergent children (of course, depending on each child and their strengths and weaknesses) that I think it makes it even harder to learn how to develop those friendship-forming skills *at* that time… I‘m so grateful that we pay attention to this sort of thing these days! 3mo
Chrissyreadit @Avanders I‘m glad too! I think our childrens generation is going to be incredibly open to accepting people where they are and who they are and I‘m so excited to see it 🎉 3mo

As Im reading this I wish I had someone to discuss it with- I think this would be a good book club or LMPBC book. So many thoughts. I‘d especially like to hear what someone who is neuro divergent thinks.

Avanders I really enjoyed this book. While of course everyone is different (even neuro-divergent people, one from another ;p), I also felt the author did a really nice job with her main character. I don‘t really want to say anything else that might be spoiler… but I‘ve been curious to hear what you think! Especially with your educational background! 3mo
Chrissyreadit @Avanders what I‘ve really learned from education is how to support learning of skills. The most important things I‘ve learned have been from neuro divergent adults and teens- and really listening to them and working to understand their perspective then help them learn how to communicate their perspective and emotions so the can be understood. I also thought the author did a great job- but recognize Im seeing it through a neuro typical lens. 3mo
Avanders That‘s so amazing — learning to communicate their perspectives and emotions to be understood is … it‘s so very valuable, yet taken for granted by non-neurodivergent people. That‘s bugga‘s biggest struggle right now! 3mo

I enjoyed being in Molly‘s world for awhile. Through her first person narrative You, the Reader, understand things she does not but, at the same time, she often takes your breath away with her insight, especially where it relates to how others perceive her. Like others I‘m not a huge fan of the reveal in the epilogue, it felt unsupported by the rest of the story and as if the author just couldn‘t let us enjoy a happy unambiguous ending. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoy the depiction of Molly as a simple reminder that we are all unique individuals that just want to be happy in life. This mystersy was quick-paced and the plot unraveled nicely, causing me to not want to put the book down. However, I found the epilogue to be a bit disconnected and wish more could be interwoven throughout the entire story to make the ending seamlessly flow together with the rest of the novel.
