Holiday Road Trip 2019 ?
Hey #jb buddies ,
I just had a tiny seed of an idea. Would any of you have interest in having a #jb group meetup next summer ? That‘d give us all a year to get a coin jar out and start tossing money in.
The center of the country is Kansas ! Funny we have no members from there, but would any of you be interested if you had a year to plan it ?
Just an idea from the National Curmudgeon Society.

mdm139 I am originally from Kansas. I suggest Wichita for a meet up, great many book stores and great zoo, a movie theater with waitress and alcohol. 2y
MicrobeMom Sounds interesting and fun! 2y
Kaye Thanks for the info @mdm139 I‘ve never been there so know nothing about it myself. This is only Dust in the Wind at the moment. Not sure it‘ll go further than that. Will see how it goes. 2y
See All 35 Comments
Kaye I guess I need to do a different map and see where the greatest number of members are from, so it‘s centered closer to the largest number. 2y
RebelReader I would love it! Great idea! 2y
JoScho I would love to meet some littens! 2y
Kaye I‘m thinking Tennessee, guys. Just from what I have come up with so far. It looks like a more centralized location than KS. Several members are from surrounding states, not too bad a drive for a number of us. Largest group is centered more in the East. Tennessee is a beautiful state. (edited) 2y
Kaye Can you guys interested give me an approximate number of miles from your state to TN ? It‘s about 500 miles for me. We have members in that state and many states surrounding or touching it. 2y
Soubhiville Lol, I‘m in TN, so yes! 2y
LapReader I‘m keen but will have to let you know closer to the date as I am an Aussie. 2y
Kaye @Soubhi , can you tell me what area down there would have some nice bookstores ? I kinda like one called The Grumpy Bookseller in Murfreesboro 2y
Kaye @LapReader That‘d be so cool if you could come over ! Have you been here before ? 2y
LapReader @Kaye nope that is why I am keen. 2y
Kaye @MicrobeMom , @rebelreader, @JoScho , what miles are you guys looking at ? 2y
Kaye How fun ! Your first trip to the US to visit the Jb gang @lapreader. 2y
BookNerd9906 I‘d be interested. I‘m in NH so about 1,200 miles away. 2y
RebelReader It‘s about a long days drive from either MN or AZ. 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Kaye yes!!!! That would be awesome!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Tennessee!! (edited) 2y
Kaye I made a list of each state we have members from, then chose the most densely populated area with jb folks. We have some from there and every state touching it .. not too bad a drive for me. Maybe a day if I push it. I‘d be in no hurry. I have plenty of time. Waddya guys think of Smoky Mountains ? They have those huge cabin rentals where we could all stay together and split the cost ? 2y
JoScho 5.5 hours for me and 275 miles 2y
CouronneDhiver It‘s about 17 hours drive from me. Lol. Maybe! 👍🏽 2y
Kaye Just think of all the scenery..quiet..space for everyone...good food, we could all bring piles of wrapped books we want to trade..,S‘mores in the fireplace .. it‘d be a slumber party for big people. 2y
SaturnDoo I am in TN...right in the middle of the state 😂 so any where in TN would roughly be a 2-4 hr drive for me. The Grumpy is about 35 mins away, Parnasus books is about 20 mins, we have McKay's used books about 25 mins away, Books a Million 20 mins away, B&N 10 mins away, Bound Booksellers 5 mins away, Landmark Booksellers 5 mins away, Melody's Used Bookstore 30 mins away...the joys of living close to Nashville 🤣 2y
Kaye @SaturnDoo Have you been to all the bookstores mentioned, and which would you consider a few of the biggest or best selections, or something different ? Probably most of the members have been to BN , so maybe something unique ? And do you know much about the cabin rental places and which would have good rates but be nice ? I‘ve found some highly different prices. I thought maybe since you lived in the general area, you‘d know which are best. 2y
MicrobeMom @Kaye not sure how many miles but it will be far. I near Philly! 2y
StephanieGeiser It looks like it would be about 1,000 from me (in MA). I‘m interested but wouldn‘t be able to commit until closer to next summer. 2y
Kaye It‘d be pretty hard to get an accurate list of who all could attend this far ahead. I‘m not familiar with the Smoky Mountain area enough to know what places would be best. If I had a bigger house, I could host it here and it‘d be free lodging. We have 4 unique used bookstores , the furthest being 20 minutes away. The town 5 minutes from here has lots of restaurants and a nice hotel that might offer group prices. We‘d have space for 3 ? Small house 2y
knittedgnome Looks like about a 9/10 hour drive from MI. So that's not too bad. Especially if I can find someone to ride with me! 2y
Kaye Thanks @knittedgnome I‘ll see what I can get figured out with it. I‘ll have a year to get it figured out. 2y
SaturnDoo I have been to all the bookstores but 2. I love McKay's used bookstore in Nashville very cheap prices. As far as cabin and chalet prices, depends on the season. Summer and fall are the busy times for tourists so more expensive. Also location usually plays in to pricing, how far they are from the attractions. I will ask some friends that go more often than me and get some answers for you. 2y
Kaye Thanks @SaturnDoo Maybe spring would be a better time. I figured Fall would be their big season...I was there as a kid, very small so dont remember much, then we took our family probably 30 years or more ago. A long time. Will see what you can find out about prices and best places. 2y
tracey38 Yes! East TN is beautiful, I love that area. I am next door in NC so would be an easy drive, which I've done a bunch of times. 2y
rustoryhuf This would be heaven. 2y
Kaye Certainly would. It‘s very pretty and peaceful down there. @rustoryhuf 2y
rustoryhuf @Kaye All y‘all know it‘s true! 2y

Car, although after 20 years in southern Cal I‘m beginning to weary of driving

I like to go someplace I haven‘t been before. But I‘m fond of Yosemite. And I want to take the kids to San Antonio.

Not exactly. We are traveling for a family event, and several trips for ice dance competitions. My son and daughter are each going away to camp.

#trivialthursday a day late

Bourriquet76 San Antonio is one of my favorite places. 2y
AWahle I grew up in San Antonio. So much to do there and in the neighboring Hill Country! 2y

1. I love to travel by car, to be able to see the sights. One day I‘d really like to take an Amtrak rail tour of the US & Canada.
2. Until last year, Seattle. It lost its spark on our last visit. New Orleans is my second favourite but I haven‘t visited there since before Katrina. My ultimate spot will be the U.K. Maybe next year. 🤞
3. Denver this weekend, Cali the first week of July and two weeks in October (undecided location)

tracey38 I've been wanting to do an Amtrak trip across country, too. Sime videos I've seen make it look like a beautiful trip/experience. 2y
GarthRanzz @tracey38 It doesn‘t look too expensive either. Especially if you buy a rail pass. Can‘t decide whether to fly to San Francisco at catch the zephyr there or just start from Salt Lake. 2y
tracey38 @GarthRanzz I need to look into it. I kniw there are different routes for different scenery. 2y
Blueberry @GarthRanzz Thank you for the Stephen King bookmark and stickers. They are awesome. 2y

Is it bad that after looking up the title of this book I now have ??"Surfin' U.S.A." ?? ? stuck in my head? ?

But seriously, I'm starting to get excited about the prospect of the hubby and I being on the road and listening to some audiobooks... or possibly a podcast or two? Maybe I'll get to sneak in some reading when I'm in the passenger seat??

Aside from what I have pictured above, does anyone have any more recommendations?

Kristy_K If you like true crime then I suggest 2y
Hooked_on_books The Stand will definitely get you a long way. The Evangelicals is a good one, but it‘s relatively dense. I enjoyed the audio and it‘s also nice and long. 2y
LiteraryinLititz I always go for an Agatha Christie read by either Hugh Fraser or David Suchet! 2y
See All 6 Comments
Librariana @Kristy_K - Columbine is one I'd definitely like to read, but unfortunately isn't available in audiobook format from either of my libraries or either of their lending services (hoopla and Overdrive). I'll definitely try my new library system once we arrive in Washington 😊 2y
Librariana @Hooked_on_books - that seems to be the case with both King and Hill books, isn't it? Detailed and lengthy! Lol! But on road trips, it's not a bad thing 😄 We also have The Fireman and Sleeping Beauties as potential contenders since we didn't have enough time to finish either previously. 2y
Librariana @LiteraryinLititz - That is not a bad suggestion AT ALL since we were curious about listening to Murder on the Orient Express before watching the movie. Thank you for helping jog my memory! Adding it to the list! 😄 2y

Hey Littens, I am planning a road trip to visit The Bookshelf in Thomasville, GA (cuz that is what I do when I need to get out of my head) this weekend. Of course, gonna buy new books. Any recommendations? I am looking for books I would enjoy reading AND would want to keep, either to reread or just stare cuz I loved it. I tend to use the library for read and enjoy, but not keepers. #thankslittens #bookrec

Sarah83 At the moment I love buying beautiful book editions. Maybe a classic you wanted to have on your shelf all the time? 2y
MinDea What kind of books do you like to read?? 2y
LisaJo @Sarah83 that is a great idea. Never thought of getting a classic. THANKS 👍🏻 2y
See All 11 Comments
LisaJo @MinDea I usually read mysteries and thrillers. But, am always looking to read outside of my box. 2y
MinDea This was my favorite book that I read last year 2y
MinDea I enjoyed this. Historical fiction mixed with a mystery 2y
MinDea Melanie Benjamin is one of my favorite authors. 2y
LisaJo Thanks everyone!! @MinDea I have a few books you mentioned, but not Eleanor Oliphat. That sounds wonderful! Thank you. 2y

So my surprise road trip is Indiana Dunes. Here is the beach we sat on for most of the day. It was still kind of a chilly day, but who cares, the beach right? Across the lake you can kind of see the Chicago skyline. Read 106 pages of The Hearts Invisible Furies. Great book so far👍

#readingroadtrip participants: you can use this map to track and update your progress on the challenge so others can see where you have been.

I'm moving slowly across the US. Started in Georgia and have yet to start my second book. This Monday we'll be posting our first travel delays & blackout states. Where in the US r u?

Join in here: https://thereadersroom.org/challenges/reading-road-trip-across-the-us/

sprainedbrain This map is a great idea! I'm moving slowly, too... it doesn't help that I picked a big book for my first state. I'm still in Maine with 3y
Kalalalatja Nice! I just finished my first book set in North Carolina, but I have no idea which book to continue with. I will have to look through my shelves when I get home 👍 3y
JenP @sprainedbrain I loved the series but didn't love the last book. I hope you like it! I am dying to see the movie 3y

JenP @Kalalalatja congrats! That was a monster of a book to start off. 3y
Kalalalatja It was! I have forgotten to ask, what are the rules regarding audiobooks and rereads? Is that okay? 3y
BookwormM Love it now if I only knew what state the letters stood for 🤣🤣🤣 3y
LaraReads Ugh. I keep getting distracted! I'm still in Georgia with 3y
LaraReads Love the map though! 3y

And we are off! Summer reading road trip across the US. Challenge runs through September. I need to figure out my starting point today. One of the participants will get to take home an unframed version of this print (but no walking dead Winnebago 😜)

sprainedbrain I'm so excited for this road trip! Yesterday I finished my tentative route and books... barring any delays. 😃 3y
JenP @sprainedbrain woo hoo! Make sure you start a thread for yourself on the blog so include you on the scoreboard. I'm so excited! 3y
sprainedbrain @JenP I've got a thread, I think. I'm Jenni Langford on there. Should I (can I?) change it to sprainedbrain on the blog to make this easier? Also, can we link to our mini reviews on Litsy instead of Goodreads as we finish books? I usually rate books on GR but do reviews here. 😃 (edited) 3y
JenP @sprainedbrain oh, ha ha! No. Now that I know it's you, no need to change it. Yes you can link to your mini reviews here. (edited) 3y
Kalalalatja Ooh this sounds like fun! I am currently reading a book set in North Carolina, so I could begin there and then try to make my way through, if that's okay? 3y
JenP @Kalalalatja how far in are you? Should be fine but since it's a race, I want to make sure that everyone starts evenly. So as long as you have at least 120 pages left, then yes. It could be your starting state (edited) 3y
Kalalalatja @JenP I am around 800 pages in out of a 1440, so I think I am good 😄 3y
sprainedbrain @JenP ok thanks! 3y
JenP @Kalalalatja definitely! 3y
moranadatter Safe virtual travels! (edited) 3y
Kristelh I'm doing the #1001 version and starting in Delaware. 3y
JenP @Kristelh I'm going to try to both. I will probably fail. Also, you can do both versions using the 1001 books on the blog. That way you will be eligible for both prizes without doing extra work. 3y
JenP @moranadatter thanks! 3y
Kristelh @JenP thanks, I will have to keep that in mind. 3y
Betty @jenp can you explain the #1001 version or link/tag me to an explanation? 3y
JenP @Betty I'm also hosting the challenge for my 1001 group on Goodreads. So a few people are members of that group and participating in that version 3y
JenP @Betty I am one of the moderators for the group. We are reading our way through boxell's list of 1001 books to read before you die. I created a version of the challenge using 1001 books so nothing you need to worry about unless you are (or want to be) in the group. But that version requires you read very specific books. Here's the link to our group: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/180736-shelfari-1001-group 3y

We are heading into the mountains tomorrow for a little family road trip. 🏔️🏔️ There's laundry, cleaning, packing, organizing to be done.
BUT, I only have 70 pages left in my current read...Makes sense to finish it right? It's silly to take along an almost-finished book. Right?

ScientistSam Of course! 3y
vivastory You definitely should finish it, so you have a fresh one (or two.. or three) to take with you 3y
CocoReads Yes, start with a fresh book tomorrow! 3y

Read4life Yup. It's the logical thing to do. 😉 3y
LeahBergen I try to time my reading before vacations so I'm not already well into a book. 😂 3y

EllieDottie That is perfect logic!! (edited) 3y
merelybookish @ScientistSam @vivastory @CocoReads @Read4life @LeahBergen @Joanne1 @EllieDottie Thanks everyone! I knew I could count on Littens for understanding/enabling.☺️ Of course, this creates the added task of what books to bring with me. 🤔 3y
