I enjoyed this story, first published in 1972. I chose an audiobook and it was well done. Then I listened to most of the Afterword that for some reason was explaining to me why I don‘t understand this novel, which assuredly I do. I find this incredibly ironic and as disturbing as the thriller itself. Thanks for mansplaining a book about women‘s equality dude.

A horrific and comically satiric indictment on conservative attacks on women's liberation, this novella, written in 1972, shows how astounding the “tradwife“ idea still is today--when a woman is on the cusp of (hopefully) becoming our first female president. As much as some want to return to the 1950s and put females back in the kitchen, Levin shows how truly tragic that return would be for us women. Indeed, “we will not go back!“ #election24

-Great narration…she (January LaVoy) is a favorite.
-A quick listen, you can finish it all in one day, easily.
-Creepy AF atmosphere despite basically knowing how it would end.

A little wordy but thr last 10 pages were very good.

Low pick. The pacing is a bit weird and the writing didn‘t wow me. Also, its cultural relevance has diminished the twist (I‘ve not seen the films and I still knew what was going on). Nonetheless, I felt it still had thematic potency, reflecting the lengths that some white, cis-het men in particular will go to in order to gain or maintain power. I found it quite bleak in that respect, particularly with the way it ended. A cautionary tale for sure.

Final #BookSpinBingo card for October. Made a bingo at the last minute 😂 made progress with a few others on here too but didn‘t quite finish. Very good reading month for me.

The writing felt a little choppy at times, although this may have been intentional. Levin captures so much normalcy in Joanna‘s marriage and contrasts that well with casual abnormalities that are easy to shrug off at first. Although it‘s a short book, Levin took his time crafting the setup, paving an intriguing path toward an eerie conclusion.

There is something strange and eerie about the town‘s beautifully manicured lawns and perfectly groomed wives.

Author Ira Levin was shocked when this thriller became a feminist meme, still popular today after almost 50 years. He got the idea after reading about my fave Disneyland attraction-Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. How cool is that! The writing is crisp & subtle, making it so eerie as the plot sneaks up behind you. I‘ve ordered both movies to rewatch & compare.

We follow Joanna and her family after their recent move to Stepford; she struggles to make friends with the beautiful, busy woman of the town “so much to do in the home”. Joanna and her new friends, other recent arrivals in Stepford, vow never to be like the hausfraus, but then her friends begin to change...

New books arrived today

I have so many thoughts about this book. I feel like it doesn‘t fit the “what does it mean to be human” theme that I‘ve been doing lately because it only focuses on the transhuman women briefly. We don‘t get to hear from those women at all. At the same time that is kind of what makes this book so scary. It suggests that those women have no stories to tell.

I don't say this often, but I liked the movie better 🎬

Well... this might be my new favourite book. The tension was gripping, and that insidious ending!! Though written in the 70s, the book's strong roots to the women's lib movement and unapologetic criticism of the patriarchy make it all the more relevant in today's landscape. A quick read that packs a punch. This will stay with me for a while!

Loved this movie, finally found a copy of the book. So far the writing is not beautiful but the story moves quickly.

This was such a good story and a fairly quick read. I read this in two sittings. Like Rosemary‘s Baby, this book was gripping and suspenseful, and kept me on the edge of my seat. Definitely recommend. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
