White Horse
White Horse: A Novel | Erika T. Wurth
White Horse is a gritty, vibrant debut from Erika T. Wurth about an Indigenous woman who must face her past when she discovers a bracelet haunted by her mothers spirit. Some people are haunted in more ways than one. Old denim jackets, ripped jeans, Stephen King novels, and the occasional beer at the White Horse Lounge have defined urban Indian Kari Jamess life so far. But when her cousin Debby finds an old family bracelet that once belonged to Karis mother, it inadvertently calls up both her mothers ghost and a monstrous entity, and her willful ignorance about her past is no longer sustainable... Haunted by visions of her mother and hunted by this mysterious creature, Kari must search for what happened to her mother all those years ago. Her father, permanently disabled from a car crash, cant help her. Her Auntie Squeaker seems to know something, but isnt eager to give it all up at once. Debby's anxious to help, but her controlling husband keeps getting in the way. Karis journey toward a truth long-denied by both her family and law enforcement forces her to confront her dysfunctional relationships, her spiritual beliefs, and her desire for the one thing shes always wanted but could never have.

I hadn't heard of this one but took a chance on it as a BOTM pick. I'm really glad I did. The cultural lore & historical experiences shared through the story were captivating. I loved the way Wurth wrote Kari's character. She was gritty, haunted, & relatable. This book is part folk story, part ghost story, & a great contribution to the perspective on history & trauma experienced by Native Americans that is often missing from so many books.⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book—as promised—is Metal. I adored the messy main character and her cast of sorrow; her brand of repentance and punishment. I loved the complicated relationships here. I will say that the middle of the book—the pacing is off. The beginning is slow and daunting, then the middle feels weird and the end is fast a furious. Enjoyed it, but if you feel the middle drag and yet go too fast—push past it. Indigenous. Metal. Bad ass. Spooky AF.

I am the biggest scaredy cat, but found this book about family lineage, and negotiating time when your best friend is married and has kids and.you don't, and the histories lost to you when your parents aren't able to share, just really fascinating.

This quote hooked meee. I really like this one. Relatable. Addicting. Does this book spend a lot of time on side plots & Dave Mustaine? Yes. Did I enjoy following Kari as she tried to get her head out of her ass, stay sober, act like an adult, interpret messages from ghosts & find out what happened to her mother? Also yes.

ShelleyBooksie This sounds great! Stacked. 3w
FelinesAndFelonies Reading this one now. I like Kari so much. Also, I hope Jack stops being a twat at some point. 2w

#7 Audio - White Horse/Erika Wurth #bookspin

More mystery w/ paranormal elements compared to horror. This is DARK with lots of triggers (addiction/sexual assault/racism). I did love the insertion of The Shining and visiting the Stanley. Wasn‘t a fan of Debbie storyline think its juxtaposing the big reveal. Interesting read, it felt like a lot was going on but I was going through the trenches to finish.

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 4w

White Horse by Erika T. Wurth is a tale of secrets that refuse to stay buried…

A slow-burn of a novel, this story takes it‘s time winding around. The paranormal focus was light; sprinkled in enough to keep catching me off guard! Go check this one out!

What a great freakin' story! Although at times the writing felt a bit of a mess, and the pacing seemed off, I truly didn't care because the story is so creative and propulsive that nothing else mattered but finding out what happened next.

The Stephen King, metal loving MC, Kari, is now one of my favorite characters ever. Kudos to Erika T. Wurth for this vibrant new horror read.

Another great Indigenous read.

jlhammar Great review! I felt much the same. I thought the part at The Stanley Hotel was especially good. 2mo
Reggie Ok, thank you for saying that. There was a big kerfuffle this past week on Twitter about what literary horror means and to me it just means there is a prose. She, doesn‘t have prose. She had a pretty awesome story, and a pretty awesome character but the writing/prose part was lacking. I liked the book, though. 2mo
Addison_Reads @Reggie literary is not a term I would use with this book. It's a book you read for the enjoyment and ignore the problematic writing. 2mo

This month‘s #BOTM pick makes for a quick and interesting read! Kari‘s cousin & best friend joins her at the titular dive bar with a bracelet of Kari‘s mother‘s- a woman who disappeared two days after Kari‘s birth. The bracelet winds up leading Kari to the truth about the past- with some strong nods to Stephen King & a lot of musical references along the way. Kari may seem younger than her years at times but her story is a good one! Strong debut!

Fun ride of mild horror/ghost story.
Our heroine Kari loves metal, her dad, & her fave dive bar called White Horse.
The bar is ancient & in danger of closing; but Kari wants to buy it & keep it open.
Her dad? He was in an accident shortly after her mother—her dad‘s one true love—disappeared.
And heavy metal? Well, that‘s the book‘s underlying soundtrack—especially anything with Dave Mustaine!

Great pick ft a Native American woman‘s perspective!

Mixed feelings about this one, but still a pick. The writing and pacing felt a bit clunky at times and I could have done without the Debby & Jack drama. On the other hand, it was a quick read with a unique narrator and very cool Indigenous horror/ supernatural elements. Overall, glad I added this to my #BOTM box.

🎧 I just finished this book.

@Reggie loved it!

MC is a sarcastic, female, Megadeth loving metalhead, Stephen King reading book lover, urban indigenous adult who‘s mom left when she was 2 days old, her dad was in an accident & doesn‘t talk.

It‘s a Native American murder, mystery full of suspense & a tiny bit of horror. I enjoyed it.

Good narration. Gritty quick easy fun read. It‘s a BOTM selection for November, thank you Libby!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️3/4

Do you ever read something and think it could be way better but then when you‘re done think this is brilliant in a lot of ways you didn‘t give it full credit for? The writing is serviceable, but the story is great! Kari is at her home when her cousin, Debby, brings her a powerful family bracelet that causes Kari to see her mother‘s ghost. A mother who no one has seen since she was 2 days old. Combined with a strong sense of place and culture 👇🏼

Reggie this is a pick! 3mo
LitStephanie Yes, I have experienced that before, too! I have finished a couple of books before and thought they weren't very good, but then weeks later was still analyzing them and picking out themes. I then realized anything that you are still thinking about weeks later must be good. 3mo
Reggie @LitStephanie there‘s this book called Come Closer by Sara Gran that‘s on everyone‘s list of best possession horror. I read it, thought meh, until people talk about possession horror, and I‘m like oh yeah, Come Closer, and then I recite everything that happened in that book. Lol 3mo

Reggie @Chelsea.Poole @Addison_Reads @Twainy I think you ladies would like it. It definitely had a vibe to it. And I enjoyed hard living, rock loving, Kari, who really paints a section of Native/Urban Indian life. I‘m thinking back on it more favorably than when I read it. Also, she loves Stephen King and there‘s a very cool part in here having to do with that. Hope ya‘ll enjoy. 3mo

Wow, #BOTM is here already! I‘ve never read Quick before, but his newest is the Indie Next List top pick for November so excited to give him a try. The Last Party is set New Year‘s Eve & Day so thinking I‘ll save that for the end of the year. I might dive into tagged right away. Sounds really good!

If I had a 4th spot I would have added The Cloisters. Might need to get that one later.
