Alright, ya'll - not book related but I know a lot of you have cats and I need advice! I've been thinking about it for so long and am finally ready to pull the trigger and get a kitten. But now that I'm visiting shelters I'm getting nervous about "single kitten syndrome" and everyone warning that I should adopt TWO kittens or risk behavioral problems. But my landlord only approved one pet. So would I be crazy to adopt just one? ?

TheAromaofBooks I've had single cats before & they have done just fine. I think if you'll be home enough to spend time with it, it shouldn't be too lonely!! All the single cats I've had have been female - not sure if that makes a difference? 3y
Reagan I don‘t think you would be wrong to get just one. There are many cats that do better in a home where they are the only, though they tend to be not kittens. I think you would be just fine to get a single kitten. (edited) 3y
Kappadeemom I have a single male cat and he has been fine by himself. He‘s very loving. 3y
See All 21 Comments
SeaToSkyes I think one will be fine, even if you are separating a pair they will usually get used to their new normal fairly quickly 3y
Peterfox123 Cats really aren‘t “pack” animals. They usually prefer to be on their own. They tolerate other cats but don‘t need them for company. I‘m quoting my retired vet wife here. 3y
JenReadsAlot I have one and he's good alone. I had 2 once and it actually didn't go well for me! How exciting! 3y
Megabooks As a vet, cats can be perfectly happy as single pets! 3y
Crazeedi So excited for you! I'm sure one kitty will be fine, and you will be loved 3y
Bookwormjillk I‘ve done it both ways and actually my two are a lot more trouble, so I say go for it! 3y
Hestapleton I had one kitten and he was totally fine on his own! He got pissed when we adopted another cat later on 😂 3y
Tamra We‘ve had single kittens/cats with no problem! She will find plenty of mischief on her own. 😸 Congrats! 3y
VanderAnna I had one kitty for years before adopting a second one! He was great on his own and then transitioned really well to his kitty sister. There is a great book called “Cat vs. Cat” that really helped us with the transition. 3y
TheDaysGoBy I‘ve only ever had one cat at a time and it‘s been fine. He survived me being gone all day with work. Though now with Covid and working from home all the time he‘s spoiled with attention 😂 But yeah, shouldn‘t be an issue. My kitty is the king of the house and it‘s the only thing that‘s stopped me from adopting a kitten because I‘m certain he‘d bully the poor thing lol 3y
LiteraryinLawrence I‘m sure one will be perfect!! It‘s so exciting that you‘re going to have a furry friend soon! 3y
ravenlee I adopted my first cat when she was about a year old, and she was my only for about six months. She was so mad when I brought home a kitten that she shut him back into his carrier the first day! Right now I have just one, and he does beautifully (although he wandered around the house for about a week looking for the other cats, since he came from a shelter). He was 5 when I adopted him. A single cat is usually just fine. 3y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I only had Fiona for months before I got Felix. But I will admit having a buddy to play with makes a difference 😽😽 3y
Scochrane26 I have never had more than one cat. My last one prob could have used a buddy, but my current cat seems content. The rescue I went through thought he would be a good match because I didn‘t have small children or other pets. I‘m also allergic now to cats, so one is all I can deal with. My cat was almost 2 yrs old when I got him. 3y
BookwormAHN I think it depends on the cat. Druzy would murder me if I got another cat. She already is really hissy about the new puppy and usually acts like my old dog doesn't exist. I think she really wishes that she was an only fur baby 🤦🏼‍♀️ 3y
Lcsmcat We‘ve done it both ways - from as many as 5 (don‘t judge) to single cats. Singletons can be more attached to their people and this more affectionate. As long as you give them attention when you are home most are fine being on their own while you‘re at work. Find out their preferred play and give them exercise that way and they‘ll be fine. 3y
sharread If they are paired with one already with a strong bond then two is a good idea. I had 2 cats that never got along it was stressful, but they tolerated each other, most of the time they fought. Watch Jackson Galaxy he's awesome. It is best to get 2 litter boxes for each cat they can get possessive about there poopoo boxes too. 3y

Okay, help! What are you all using for the “Cat” book for #jennyis30 ? Tag books that might fit in the comments! I prefer fiction and maybe not a cozy mystery (which was true first thing that popped into my head)

Emilymdxn I just thought of this one tho I haven‘t read it and am not sure what it‘s about 4y
xicanti I second THE TRAVELLING CAT CHRONICLES. I read it in 2018 and can confirm it‘s wonderful. 4y
effani I loved The Wildings by Nilanjana Roy - it's a fantasy story about a group of feral cats in Delhi. 4y
See All 9 Comments
JSW If you're open to a children's / middle grade, one of my favorites is 4y
TheSpineView If you have not read Dewey the Library Cat, I recommend it. 4y
Librariana And I immediately thought of The Warriors series by Erin Hunter. These are middle grade books and I believe the first is 4y
Soubhiville And another fantasy, this one where cats and humans communicate telepathically: 4y

I got a call this evening from my local animal shelter that I've worked with in the past, & where I've adopted my kitties from, asking me if I would be able to come save a litter of kittens that someone had just brought in. They'd been outside, were overheated & dehydrated. After some IV fluids & basic care, they needed someone to take them for bottle feedings & potty stimulation, if there was any hope of survival. I decided I am that someone!

Lcsmcat Awww! Good for you! That‘s a lot of work, but they‘re adorable. 5y

madamereadsalot1 @Lcsmcat @CouronneDhiver @Lady_Tigana_20 @JoScho @LauraJ @LibrarianRyan @Megabooks @Catsandbooks thanks! We just finished our 1am feeding/face cleaning/potty going routine. One of them has me concerned, not interested in eating or pottying. But my alarm is set for 3 hours from now to try again. I'm gonna be very tired at work tomorrow! Thankfully I'll have lots of help from coworkers with them and then I'm off til Tuesday! 5y
Catsandbooks Hope the little one improves and you're able to get some sleep! Least it's a good reason to lose some sleep 💕 5y
TheSpineView That's great that you can foster. Shelters depend heavily on fosters during kitten season.💜🐾 5y

Sorry Litsy, I can‘t come to the phone right now, I‘ve got this new little butter bean keeping me busy/stealing the lap space a book generally does. This is Cooper (husband is a big Twin Peaks fan, so I got the kitten, he got the name 😹). We‘re on day 3 and haven‘t introduced him to #KingCyress yet, so the real fun hasn‘t even begun. 😬 #catsoflitsy #damnfinecooper

Better.

The collar was the main problem. The rest will be okay in time.

The vet-on-wheels is a superhero. And a very polite and gentle woman. Within minutes Ghost was visibly better. (She's not eating yet, but went to the toilet already.)

Thank you all for your well-wishes.

My next post is going to be book related. 😉

Happy Black Cat Appreciation Day! (That's every day in my house.) Meet Kili, the unexpected kitten. This book was very useful at the time he came to live with us. (Some of the puns are OTT, but it's well organized and thorough.) Even though I've been around grown-ass cats all my life, I was barely more than a kitten myself the last time we had little ones around. It's like suddenly having a toddler in the house!

Zelma ❤️ black cats. One of my three boys is all black. And yes to the toddler comparison! They are such trouble when they're young. Cuteness saves them from being banished from the house. 😂 8y
Susanita Oh yes! Especially when they give you ... the look. 8y
