A Long Way Home
A Long Way Home: A Memoir | Saroo Brierley
The miraculous and triumphant story of a young man who rediscovers not only his childhood life and homebut an identity long-since left behind. At only five years old, Saroo Brierley got lost on a train in India. Unable to read or write or recall the name of his hometown or even his own last name, he survived alone for weeks on the rough streets of Calcutta before ultimately being transferred to an agency and adopted by a couple in Australia. Despite his gratitude, Brierley always wondered about his origins. Eventually, with the advent of Google Earth, he had the opportunity to look for the needle in a haystack he once called home, and pore over satellite images for landmarks he might recognize or mathematical equations that might further narrow down the labyrinthine map of India. One day, after years of searching, he miraculously found what he was looking for and set off to find his family. A Long Way Home is a moving, poignant, and inspirational true story of survival and triumph against incredible odds. It celebrates the importance of never letting go of what drives the human spirit: hope. When Saroo Brierley used Google Earth to find his long-lost birthplace half a world away, his story made global headlines. That story is being published in several languages around the world and is currently being adapted into a major feature film. Brierley was born in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, India. He currently lives in Hobart, Tasmania.

This was my book pick on this ‘books with movies‘ season of Book Interrupted. This is an amazing true story of a 5 year old in India that got caught on a train and ultimately got lost. He got adopted by a family in Australia and then 25 years later because of Google Earth was able to find home again. This is an incredible story with an unbelievably happy ending. The book was slow in places and the movie changed some things but I enjoyed both.

SarahBookInterrupted Check out what everyone said here on the podcast and how an interesting fact about the book revealed at the beginning of the podcast changes thoughts and opinions about the book.

Princess-Kingofkings I watched a movie about this. It would have been easier to understand if I had read the book first, but didn‘t know there was a book when I came across the movie. 6mo
SarahBookInterrupted @Princess-Kingofkings I ended up watching the movie first which I don‘t usually do, so there were surprises and differences in the book. I think you‘re right it would have been better if I watched the movie second I think. 6mo
SarahBookInterrupted Also, the movie completely got rid of one of his brothers. I never understand that. I wonder what his brother thought when he watched the movie. 6mo

I don't remember the last time I read an entire book in one day. Nay, an entire book in five hours. Saroo's story captivated me. As soon as I put the book down, I watched the movie with my husband. I'm in awe of his resilience, persistence, and immense love for his family. What an incredible journey. 👏👏

Saroo goes on a long journey.

This is based on Saroo‘s real life journey across India/the world at 5 years old.

I enjoyed the first half of this book, but by the second half, he started to get repetitive in his story telling. He had a reason for it but for me when my attention span is very limited at this time making it difficult to stay interested.

Day 26: For fun, I am going to post one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want. #bookstoread #tbrpile @StaceyKondla

Curiouser_and_curiouser Loved this one! 4y
Cortg @Curiouser_and_curiouser I saw the movie so I wanted to wait a bit before reading the book . I‘m really looking forward to it! 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @Cortg Yes, I did hear there was a movie a few years ago but I held off watching it until I finished the book. Both fabulous but of course the book was better, more detailed and the movie was slightly different in a couple of ways which I was confused about. Good to leave a gap between watching and reading. Enjoy :) 4y

This is story of how Saroo gets lost in India. He is then found by the authorities and adopted by an Australian family. As an adult he embarks on a daunting and seemingly impossible journey to find his birth mother and family.

A great tale of perseverance, love and what ifs. It is a well told and thoughtful read. Though a little bit too much detail on searching Google maps for my liking, it is worth the time.

LeeRHarry I‘ve only seen the movie and I bawled my eyes through that. 5y

I‘ve wanted to read this ever since I saw the film and I really enjoyed it! I was surprised by how closely the film stuck to the book which isn‘t normally the case. Saroo was a wonderful narrator and it‘s an incredible story. I learned a lot about Calcutta, international adoption and Australia - a lot for one book! I was hoping for a bit more on Mantosh and his other family members but still a great book

🚂 This is the true story of a boy from #India. He got on a train & got separated from his family. Since he couldn‘t remember the name of his town or his mom he was adopted to a couple from Australia.
It‘s so good. You should read it too.
Also it was made into the movie Lion. Has anyone seen it?

#AnglophileApril #TakeTheLongWayHome First, I LOVE this song and the entire album reminds me of summer sleep-away camp😊 Tagged memoir is the unforgettable story of Saroo Brierley, a 5yr old boy, who becomes separated from his brother while out in India. Not knowing the name of his neighborhood or what area he is from, Saroo is eventually placed in an orphanage and adopted by a couple in Australia. This book is his journey. Movie is amazing 💔

This is an inspiring story, but I'll be honest about the writing. I thought it was simplistic and not in line with the obvious complexity of feelings and experiences. For a book with a credited ghostwriter, I was surprised at how almost childish the writing was. Criticisms aside, the themes of love, loss, and fitting in are universal and I'm glad I read this. Now I can watch the movie since it's on Netflix. Full review at www.thebibliophage.com

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen The audio doesn't say that, but maybe it actually was. It's confusing when publishers change titles and content all over the place! 7y
ErikasMindfulShelf The movie was great! 7y
BellaBookNook I have not read it but it reminds me of The Orphan Keeper by Camron Wright which I highly recommend. I loved that book. The main character was actually kidnapped and sold into an agency but the story really brings up so much and stays with you. I, too want to read Lion prior to seeing the movie. Glad to hear it was good. 7y
Megabooks I wonder if this is any different from A Long Way Home. I thought Vikas Adam did a great job with audio, which is how I went. 7y

Amazing memoir! I saw the movie Lion before I read the book. The book ties in perfectly. Some things Saroo described were VERY disturbing. Therefore, I would not recommend this book to a child under the age of 13. Saroo's experience could be very inspiring to those searching for birth parents or those who want to adopt a child from another country.

Simply written and told this is an incredibly moving true story of survival and hope. At the age of 5, with no education and nothing but the clothes he was wearing, Saroo became separated from his family on a railroad platform in India. This was such a great and touching story. The idea that a 5 year old could survive on their own through such poverty is mind blowing. The love of a mother is so beautiful. To think that she waited 24 years for him to return is incredible. This story also raised the issues in the adoption process and the poor state of India and its millions of children. I'm new to non fiction and am so glad I read this.
