Prayer for Owen Meany
Prayer for Owen Meany | John Irving
*I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voicenot because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother's death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany. *In the summer of 1953, two eleven-year-old boysbest friendsare playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary. Amazon.com ReviewOwen Meany is a dwarfish boy with a strange voice who accidentally kills his best friend's mom with a baseball and believes--accurately--that he is an instrument of God, to be redeemed by martyrdom. John Irving's novel, which inspired the 1998 Jim Carrey movie Simon Birch, is his most popular book in Britain, and perhaps the oddest Christian mystic novel since Flannery O'Connor's work. Irving fans will find much that is familiar: the New England prep-school-town setting, symbolic amputations of man and beast, the Garp-like unknown father of the narrator (Owen's orphaned best friend), the rough comedy. The scene of doltish the doltish headmaster driving a trashed VW down the school's marble staircase is a marvelous set piece. So are the Christmas pageants Owen stars in. But it's all, as Highlights magazine used to put it, "fun with a purpose." When Owen plays baby Jesus in the pageants, and glimpses a tombstone with his death date while enacting A Christmas Carol, the slapstick doesn't cancel the fact that he was born to be martyred. The book's countless subplots add up to a moral argument, specifically an indictment of American foreign policy--from Vietnam to the Contras. The book's mystic religiosity is steeped in Robertson Davies's Deptford trilogy, and the fatal baseball relates to the fatefully misdirected snowball in the first Deptford novel, Fifth Business. Tiny, symbolic Owen echoes the hero of Irving's teacher Gnter Grass's The Tin Drum--the two characters share the same initials. A rollicking entertainment, Owen Meany is also a meditation on literature, history, and God. --Tim AppeloFrom Publishers WeeklyJoe Barrett captures the humor and sorrow of Irving's classic novel about faith, friendship and fate. We follow the adventures of diminutive Owen Meany and his best friend Johnny Wheelwright as they grapple with life, death and devotion and come of age in the small town of Gravesend, N.H. Barrett deftly portrays a host of strange and wonderful characters as Owen commandeers the local Christmas pageant, battles with an autocratic headmaster and fulfills what he believes to be his destiny. Faced with the unenviable task of capturing the singular voice of the titular character (in the novel, Owen's dialogue is capitalized to represent his strident, squeaking speech), Barrett produces a workmanlike rendition of Owen that, while not perfect, grows on listeners as the story unfolds. True to the spirit of the text, Barrett's masterful rendition is a delight. A Morrow hardcover. (Aug.) Copyright Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

John Irving definitely had a plan when he wrote this novel. I was intrigued by the title and the plot. It has more religious overtones than I expected. I found some of the characters quite interesting. I laughed in certain situations and felt tears in my eyes in others. Owen and Johnny were best friends and I respected their bond. The chapters carried on forever! I will remember the VW and headmaster story for a long time. I gave a 4.5/5 rating

Soubhiville You read it! I‘m glad you liked it and got further than I did. This is one of @AmyG ‘s favorites I believe. If you would like more that are similar you should look at her page, or maybe she would give you recommendations 🙂 4w

30 book recommendations in 30 days...

Day 13: I went through a phase in life where I read this one once a year. Owen Meany is a character that will stay with me for a very long time. I didn't enjoy the adult life sections as much, but overall there is so much to think about with this novel. #30recsin30days

TiredLibrarian I should read this. I have a friend who RAVES about this one, and she's not usually given to raving. 9mo
CuriousG @TiredLibrarian I will say there are parts where I feel it could have been edited down a bit, but even so, the character of Owen Meany is so unique and intriguing that I still think this is one of my favourites ever. 9mo

#12booksof2022 June pick.Published in 1989 , it quickly became a favorite of many readers .I was an Irving fan , but avoided it.MAYBE IT WAS BECAUSE OWEN SPOKE IN CAPS! Maybe it is because this book talks a lot about faith , which I don‘t really have a good relationship with!😄And while I loved it , it is STILL NOT MY FAVORITE IRVING!😄Another factor, sometimes you want a book you deliberately didn‘t read by a fave in case something happens.🤷‍♀️

Ruthiella This is POTENTIALLY my favorite Irving. I haven‘t read them all (yet) and I definitely want to re-read this too. 1y
Andrew65 I own this and need to read it. What would be your favourite Irving? (edited) 1y
CuriousG For someone with a tenuous relationship with faith, some of my favourite books of all time include significant faith themes. This novel and The Sparrow/Children of God (Mary Doria Russell) top that list. Spiritual aspects aside, I think the character development of Owen is so intriguing. 1y

Everyone seems to rave but it was really just ok to me. Much too long, too much religion and too much political stuff. This really wasn't a highly rated one for me.

#outlier For many, this book is their favorite Irving , honestly, I put it off.So much church ,SO MANY CAPITAL LETTERS! Owen , the voice, is a great character & so much of life ,loss, & friendship are in these pages .I did love it.Irving never is afraid to show death can come in an unexpected moment, things like the Vietnam war & the political climate can change your life plan & world view. That faith can be inspired from a person & not a church🔽

Leftcoastzen I first read Irving when I was losing faith in reading. He brought me back ! But I still like Garp, Hotel New Hampshire,& Cider House better. 2y

The 10th book towards my target of 50. Every time I read this book, I take away something new, whilst many reviews focus on the religious element of the narrative, this book is so much more to me. Friendship, love and loss are the prevailing factors I feel. This quote sums it up perfectly ‘When someone you love dies, and you're not expecting it, you don't lose her all at once; you lose her in pieces over a long time.‘ Such a beautiful book.

*Old Review*
OWEN HAS AN UNUSUAL VOICE. This is a book that looks at religion and the Vietnam War, and the unique relationship between Owen and John. Owen kills John's mum with a baseball and he feels he is God's instrument. The boys grow up together, Owen has a dream of his own death and realises it at the end when he saves some children from a bomb. Lovely characters and story.

Book 158 An extremely well-written, character-driven, setting-rich novel. Told ex post facto, through the perspective of his best friend, John Wheelwright, it's a very appropriate read for Christmas-time. About a quarter of the book is political--about the Reagan administration and the Vietnam War-- and requires serious slogging through. It was not an easy read and would benefit from revision, in my opinion, but I highly recommend.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It‘s impossible to articulate how much I loved this. Owen Meany - tiny, awkward, and shrill - completely imprints on your being. He‘s annoyingly brilliant, unintentionally funny, and just so goddamned endearing and wise. This coming of age, told through the eyes of Meany‘s best friend John, is intricate and absurd. It‘s a story of friendship mostly, but also of conviction and fate. Holy freaking book hangover. A favorite, for sure!

I was in a bit of a reading rut this month. I zipped through some shorter books over the weekend and now I‘m making great progress on my current (tagged) read. These are the books that helped me through. ❤️

I got the books you sent today and the pretty card! @Soubhiville 🥳🥳 I love birds and I used to have parakeets! @CaliforniaCay this is my book collection so far! I'm ecstatic to say the least. I could cry over the kindnesses done for me. I am beginning to feel more like myself now. Idk who that girl was that had no books. Thx so much 😘😘😘 @chrissyreadit @ruthiella @catiewithac

Ruthiella Nice! Owen Meany is one of my favorite books. I hope you like it! 😀 4y
Soubhiville I hope they will bring you lots of joy! 4y

I'm not much of a re-reader, but #3Books I've reread! We all know how I feel about A Prayer For Owen Meany! 😉

Ruthiella I want to re-read Owen Meany. Last year I re-experienced The Cider House Rules on audio and loved it all over again. 😀 4y
MicheleinPhilly I really should re-read my favorite Irvings. His latest books have been such stinkers I could use a reminder of why I love him. 4y
Chab256 @MicheleinPhilly I've never read any of his newer stuff! 4y

Chab256 @Ruthiella I never got around to Cider House Rules... 4y
MicheleinPhilly Ugh. Don‘t. I loved Last Night in Twisted River but his other recent books have been STINKERS. 4y
BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly I used to love him too but I didn‘t even love Last Night in Twisted River. My favorite may be Owen as well, followed by The Ciderhouse Rules and Garp 💚 @Chab256 (edited) 4y

My September TBR pile. Audiobooks TBD, I‘ll probably just wing that! I wish I had more of my personal books in the pile but apparently I have a thing for library books 😂 The tagged book is the one I most look forward to. #TBRCrew @jessinikkip @jb73 @AkashaVampie @AsYouWish @AnansiGirl @ElizaMarie @Catherine_Willoughby @MissAimz_55 @Squidgwet @Bookworm54 @katy4peas

Cortg @cathysaid I NEED a good chunkster that will stay with me! It‘s been a while. 4y
Cortg @AsYouWish Me too! I chose it for a book challenge. These books pack a lot of punch and are great for kids! I wish they had this series when I was younger. 4y
AsYouWish My students love them and when they were in third grade they did biography projects based on them and we watched the Netflix show, it was awesome!! 4y

1. CLEANING! No question.
2. I still think about the tagged book from time to time even though it wasn‘t a 5⭐️ read.
3. I‘ve been told (in my thinner days) that I resembled Julia Stiles, so I‘ll go with her.

“I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice - not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother‘s death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany.” Re-reading a favourite. Hooks you from the first sentence!

BarbaraBB I loved this one too! 4y
Kimzey One of my favorites! 3y
