50 Oscar Nights
50 Oscar Nights: Iconic Stars & Filmmakers on Their Career-Defining Wins | Dave Karger
4 posts
An exclusive look behind the scenes of the Academy Awards as top stars and filmmakers discuss their Oscar wins and tell never-before-told tales of Hollywood's biggest night, in a collection of original interviews with Turner Classic Movies host and entertainment media journalist Dave Karger. For almost a century, movie fans have been riveted by the Academy Awards and the stars who have won Oscars. 50 Oscar Nights takes readers behind the scenes of Hollywoods most storied awards show through new and exclusive interviews with dozens of A-list actors, filmmakers, and craftspeople spanning sixty years of the Oscars. Here these artists reflect on their winning work and recount all the details of how they got ready, how they felt when they heard their name and got up on stage to accept their award, what they wore, how the entire experience impacted their life, and more. Some interviews bring to light fun stories like why Hilary Swank decided to celebrate her Academy Award at the Astro Burger in West Hollywood, or insight into the work as Elton John explains why he was convinced he won his Best Original Song award for the wrong tune. Other interviews illuminate why for some honorees, such as Julia Roberts, John Legend, and Octavia Spencer, the day remains a life highlight to be treasured, while for Marlee Matlin, Mira Sorvino, and Barry Jenkins, complex emotions cloud what most think would be a purely celebratory moment. Filled with more than 150 photos of red-carpet moments, emotional acceptances, and after-party play, 50 Oscar Nights is both a stunning record of cinema glamour and a must-read for any movie lover. Full list of interviewees: Nicole Kidman, Elton John, Jennifer Hudson, Steven Spielberg, Jane Fonda, Barry Jenkins, Halle Berry, J. K. Simmons, Julia Roberts, John Legend, Rita Moreno, Martin Scorsese, Marlee Matlin, Dustin Hoffman, Hannah Beachler, Cameron Crowe, Mira Sorvino, Kevin OConnell, Sally Field, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, Eddie Redmayne, Lee Grant, Louis Gossett Jr., Hilary Swank, Clint Eastwood, Jessica Yu, Michael Douglas, Catherine Martin, Francis Ford Coppola, Allison Janney, Mel Brooks, Emma Thompson, Peter Jackson, Marcia Gay Harden, Mark Bridges, Sofia Coppola, Joel Grey, Glen Hansard and Markta Irglov, Olivia Colman, Rob Epstein, Whoopi Goldberg, Alan Menken, Melissa Etheridge, Sissy Spacek, Keith Carradine, Estelle Parsons, Geoffrey Fletcher, Octavia Spencer, Aaron Sorkin, Meryl Streep

dabbe @Ruthiella It's like movies fell off the face of the earth when the 2000s started for me as well! What was your one? Thanks for playing and sharing. 🤩😍🤩 2mo
Bookwormjillk 12% I guess I‘m just not a movie person. Loved The Martian though. 2mo
Librarybelle Just 17 for me—I‘m really not up to date with modern films. Loved Barbie! And, I really liked Moneyball! 2mo
TheSpineView Thanks for the tag! 🥰💛🏷 2mo
BooksandCoffee4Me 23 for me. My son is a movie reviewer so those that I‘ve seen are ones that he, my other son, and my husband wanted to see. Roma was amazing, as was Tree of Life. 2mo
BooksandCoffee4Me Tidbits: I won‘t see Gravity because I have a very real, irrational fear of dying in space after seeing Spacecowboys. And if interested in some unique movie reviews: https://boxd.it/5npPF (edited) 2mo
shortsarahrose 41! - hard to pick favorites, but some include True Grit, Zero Dark Thirty, Phantom Thread, and Little Women. In an apparently unpopular opinion, I absolutely hated Tree of Life. 2mo
TheLudicReader 🤣 16! 2mo
AnnCrystal Thanks for the tag 🤩🎬💝. 2mo
melissajayne 61

Faves: Theory of Everything, Jojo Rabbit, Barbie
2mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 21 films. Hugo ❤️ a fave. The bright colors, the story, Jude Law, and early film. Mad Max Fury Road - fun popcorn movie with a flame-throwing guitar! Call Me By Your Name - made me wistful for early 80's Italy. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - made me wistful for the golden age of film. Black Panther - damn good fun! The Holdovers - quiet but so good. The Banshees of Inisherin - love Colin Farrell! Dune - took a gummy & could taste the dry.

Pogue Eight, I have seen eight. 2mo

Ruthiella The Decendents was the only one. I think I might have seen it on a plane. 2mo
dabbe @Ruthiella Now added to my TBW! 😍 2mo
julesG A whopping 17. Unless re-watching counts, then probably 200. 😜 2mo
Sparklemn Only 28. Favorites are The Holdover, Past Lives and Little Women. Also Black Panther. A big Nope to Life of Pi. Can‘t remember why I didn‘t like it! 2mo

Amiable 20 for me. 😬 I really liked “Lincoln,” “The Imitation Game,” “The Banshees of Inisheer” and “Jo-Jo Rabbit.” 2mo
dabbe @Amiable You kicked my sorry butt! Thanks for playing and sharing! 💙💚💙 2mo
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards 25 for me! I like so many of these in different ways - we named our cat Watney after The Martian, and will always leave it on if it's on tv. Promising Young Women is probably the best one on this list that I never want to rewatch; it was powerful but brutal. 2mo
dabbe @SaunteringVaguelyDownwards You also kicked my butt! Thanks for playing and sharing. 💙💚🩵 2mo

thebacklistbook 38/100 much higher than the previous weeks 2mo
Amiable Only 35. I‘m just not a big movie person. 🤷🏻‍♀️ “Field of Dreams” is one of my all-time favorites, though. And “Mystic River” was the best adaptation from a book that I‘ve ever seen. 2mo
Chrissyreadit 34. I do not watch a lot of… and when i do it‘s often on repeat. 2mo
melissajayne 65/100 went to a lot of movies during this period. So many really good movies and ones I like. The Reader, Erin Brockovich, Michael Clayton, Beauty and the Beast, Saving Private Ryan, Capote, Brokeback, etc. 2mo

tpixie 56% there are many I would like to see include The Hours, The Reader, Benjamin Button— some I can‘t believe I didn‘t see! 2mo
dabbe @tpixie IKR? I've added quite a few to my TBW! 🤩 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵💙🩵 2mo
Pogue This is my worst one yet. Many of these I have never heard of. 2mo
dabbe @Pogue I know the last one will be mine. 🤣 I pretty much stopped going to the movies after 2010. Thanks for playing and sharing. 💙🩵💙 2mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I clicked the link feeling confident, and I've only watched 23 of these (that I remember). Beauty & the Beast, As Good As It Gets, and Lord of the Rings are my favorites of the bunch, but I remember thinking that Born on the Fourth of July and Saving Private Ryan were both very good. The first 10 minutes of Up made my ugly cry in the bathroom for 20 minutes before I could continue, so there's that.... 2mo
dabbe @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick #ditto on the ugly cry intro to UP! 😭 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵💙🩵 2mo

It‘s been a hot minute since I‘ve joined in #ThreeListThursday #TLT but since I loves me some movies, I had to join in. Thanks to my Dad, I did well with 88/96!

My top 3 from this list:

1️⃣ The Greatest Show On Earth: great memories watching this with my dad SO MANY TIMES! 🎪

2️⃣ The Silence of the Lambs: just rewatched it a month or so ago. Still just as 😱

3️⃣ The Sound of Music: a favorite of my mom, how can you not sing along?🎶

⬇️

DebinHawaii … And I had to pick a 4th favorite. CODA I first watched it a couple years ago & LOVED it. I 😭In a good way! 3mo
