The Sandman Vol. 3: Dream Country
The Sandman Vol. 3: Dream Country | Neil Gaiman
NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Neil Gaiman's transcendent series SANDMAN is often hailed as the definitive Vertigo title and one of the finest achievements in graphic storytelling. Gaiman created an unforgettable tale of the forces that exist beyond life and death by weaving ancient mythology, folklore and fairy tales with his own distinct narrative vision. The third book of the Sandman collection, DREAM COUNTRY continues the fantastical mythology of Morpheus, the King of Dreams. In these centuries-spanning tales, the powerful entity known as the Sandman interacts with a diverse assortment of humans, fairies, heroes, and animals as he walks the mortal plane. Including an amazing encounter with William Shakespeare and an interesting take on the origin and first performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," this book depicts the dreaming world of cats, the tragic life of forgotten super-heroes and the folly of imprisoning and torturing a former lover of the King of Dreams. A new, recolored edition of the classic SANDMAN series, DREAM COUNTRY collects issues #17-20 including "A Midsummer Night's Dream," which won a World Fantasy Award.

Expect to see a lot more reviews for all the “Sandman” books popping up on my feed, as my husband got me the entire collection for Christmas. This one was my favorite so far. I especially liked the stories about the Muse, Calliope, and of course the one about the cats.

rwmg I used a Christmas Amazon voucher to get this one 3w

#ManicMonday time again! @JoScho

1. Sandman. You can't have dream without him.
2. Dreamscape. Classic bad 80s sci-fi.
3. A Nightmare to Remember by Dream Theater. One of my all time favorite bands. Some of the best guitar and drum work that you will ever hear.

GrilledCheeseSamurai Sandman, Dreamscape and Dream Theater. This is a perfect post. 💯 5mo

I'm at 19 hours now, and so can technically reach #24in48 if I read non-stop until the end of the readathon - which is 5 am for me. This is a doubtful scenario, but I'll at least read some Sandman and contemplate starting another book. It's only just midnight.

I love this graphic novel series! Just can‘t get enough of the world and Morpheus. Though the stories in this volume doesn‘t do much to further the narrative of the first two volumes. We do get to see how Morpheus has impacted the world through the ages and all the guises he uses. Only one story confused me but it included Death who I also love so I was fine with it 😁

Swe_Eva Fantastic series! I reread the whole bunch every five years or so. Love it. 7mo

Not my favourite in the Sandman series - I know it intentionally does not slide in to the ongoing story arc of the series which probably contributed to my lowered enjoyment of it

I still really enjoy this series. This volume contains 4 standalone stories. My least favorite of the bunch was the Midsummer's Nights Dream. I am not that fond of Shakespeare, so I think that prejudiced me. The cat episode was cute, and thought provoking for me. I plan on continuing with this series and am excited to move on to book 4.

I‘ve been reading my way through the Sandman collected volumes. It‘s a series that‘s been on my TBR list for ages, because I‘ve heard excellent things about Neil Gaiman, and Sandman, for the innovations and recognition it brought to the comics industry.

I must say, I haven‘t been enjoying it as much as I‘d expected. This may be because all th... #summerreading #backlistupdates

I always think of this as my least favourite volume, but I'm not sure that's actually true. I love all four stories--"Façade" might be my favourite, despite what I told @TobeyTheScavengerMonk the other day--and I appreciate how these seemingly standalone pieces slot into the wider narrative. Three of them directly foreshadow major plot points, and I ain't convinced the fourth is as discrete as it appears. This is good, subtle stuff. #comics

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Y‘know, despite the gorgeous Charles Vess art on Midsummer, I think Façade is my favorite too. Partly because I love the Sandman moments where DC universe characters pop up, but mainly because it is a damn good story. And speaking of Calliope, you know what I always thought would be cool? An anthology where different authors write stories based on all the ideas her captor starts spouting. 2y

In one of the SEX CRIMINALS trades, Fraction & Zdarsky moan about how the DREAM COUNTRY back matter is a script to one of the stories they JUST READ, and what the hell? I felt vindicated, because I've skipped the script during every reread for that exact reason.

Comic scripts for familiar material are kinda fun when you've never seen one before. After that... well. #comics

When I was younger, I dreamed of playing Puck. I memorized this speech and waited for someone to mount a local production so I could audition.

It never happened, and a couple years back I finally admitted to myself I don't actually like A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM. I just WANT to like it because 13-year-old me thought Puck was a great role.

Gaiman & Vess's take on it delights me way more than Shakespeare's. #comics

Honestly, I didn't love Vol 3. I found the short story structure too disjointed and they didn't really give me what I wanted - which was more Sandman and his backstory. However, the example script at the back is a fantastic addition, giving you an insight into the vivid imagination and imagery of Gaiman whilst he works.
