Sandman Vol. 3: Dream Country (New Edition)
Sandman Vol. 3: Dream Country (New Edition) | Neil Gaiman
The third book of the Sandman collection is a series of four short comic book stories. In each of these otherwise unrelated stories, Morpheus serves only as a minor character. Here we meet the mother of Morpheus's son, find out what cats dream about, and discover the true origin behind Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream. The latter won a World Fantasy Award for best short story, the first time a comic book was given that honor. This volume includes issues 17-20 of the original series and features completely new coloring, approved by the author, of issues 17 and 18.

I somehow skipped over this one when I started rereading the series earlier this year, so I grabbed it off the shelf out of order. It has several of the issues that feature in season one of the Netflix adaptation, so it was actually quite fresh in my mind. #scarathlon #skeletoncrew @Emilymdxn

I think what I like most about Morpheus is that Gaiman avoids the temptation of making his main character this great guy. He‘s kind of an ass, he‘s stubborn, has a temper, but he also cares in his own way. Morpheus is truly a complex character. While these stories aren‘t central to the plot, they do give us important background information to the Endless, to this world that they inhabit.

Clare-Dragonfly I agree, I love what a deep and complex character Morpheus is! He‘s not quite a hero… but he‘s not an antihero, either. 1y
AshleyHoss820 @Clare-Dragonfly Exactly! He‘s just…real! And it‘s interesting because, as an immortal character, he could be this high-and-mighty being, but he isn‘t. In many ways, and he would never admit this, he‘s almost human. ☺️😄 1y
Clare-Dragonfly Ha, he would hate to be described that way, but yes! 😆 1y

Four stories. All of them features one of the Endless. In all of them dreaming and power is important.

This was an enjoyable read. My favorite two stories were “A Dream of a Thousand Cats“ and “Facade“. The “Midsummer's Night Dream“ did seem to drag a little longer than I liked but still a good story. Artwork is fantastic in the book. All the stories were well written.

This volume doesn't have much continuity between the different stories, but I still found it beguiling for the most part. Two of it I really liked because of how offbeat they were: precisely the kind of bizarre stuff that takes hold of your imagination. One of it involved a cat entering the Dreaming, the other is about Shakespeare & his troupe's first performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Morpheus shows up, in his usual way, in each story.

Enchanted_Bibliophile In the end all these stories that don't make sense now form part of the big ending 2y
batsy @Enchanted_Bibliophile Ah, that's good to know! I read most of these before, but a long time ago, and not all of the volumes. I'm looking forward to seeing how it all comes together. 2y
Enchanted_Bibliophile Enjoy, It's a magnificent piece of work! 2y
batsy @Enchanted_Bibliophile It really is! I love that this edition had Gaiman's script at the end to show how a comic comes to be. I was blown away by the actual work and the force of imagination that went into all of it. 2y
Enchanted_Bibliophile It is pretty spectacular, seeing how it all comes together. It is so different from novels. The whole thought process behind it amazed me the first time I saw how it was done. 2y

I remember this being my favorite of the Sandman books, though I‘m not sure it is anymore! I really enjoy the Calliope script at the end, though I noticed several places where Gaiman‘s descriptions are deviated from in the art to make it more sexual (note: TW for rape)—which is pretty disappointing.

Bk2 of #24in48 #readathon is done! A quick GN, this series is one of the strangest I‘ve ever read. And I‘ve read a lot of Stephen King! It‘s about Orpheus the God of The Dream(who looks exactly like Robert Smith from The Cure)and his sojourns amongst his realm & the humans. It‘s full of freaky people, monsters & what looks like LSD fuelled imagery. I loved it but it‘s not for everyone. Don‘t say I didn‘t warn you! It‘s also a #BookspinBingo👇👇

As I understand this issue serves as an interlude between what we know of The Sandman and what's to come.

And let me tell you; I absolutely can not wait to see where we're going next!

I loved that this edition also have a "how to write a comic" part. Where the script for CALLIOPE is given with notes from both Neil and Kelly. It opens one's eyes to the time and details that goes into creating a piece of art.

All-in-all it wasn't a bad reading day 16h28m. I was aiming for 20hours because I know tomorrow is going to be busy. Hopefully I'll be able to read a bit tomorrow night and see if I can get my total up to 20h

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙫𝙤𝙡. 4: 𝘿𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝘾𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙮 consists of 4 short stories...I didn‘t like any of the them. 👎🏽 The first story turned me off, the second story was dumb, the third story was eh and I can‘t remember what the 4th was about because by then I was bored to tears. Aside from Death and Dream, none of the characters from the previous volumes were featured.

Again, gorgeously illustrated. The first three stories (one about an enslaved Muse, one about cats trying to take back the world through dreams, and one about the first performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream) were interesting, but I didn't really get the fourth story about immortality as a gift or curse from Ra. I didn't read the script and instructions to the illustrators for the first story, which was included as a bonus.

I'm at 19 hours now, and so can technically reach #24in48 if I read non-stop until the end of the readathon - which is 5 am for me. This is a doubtful scenario, but I'll at least read some Sandman and contemplate starting another book. It's only just midnight.

I love this graphic novel series! Just can‘t get enough of the world and Morpheus. Though the stories in this volume doesn‘t do much to further the narrative of the first two volumes. We do get to see how Morpheus has impacted the world through the ages and all the guises he uses. Only one story confused me but it included Death who I also love so I was fine with it 😁

Swe_Eva Fantastic series! I reread the whole bunch every five years or so. Love it. 5y

I still really enjoy this series. This volume contains 4 standalone stories. My least favorite of the bunch was the Midsummer's Nights Dream. I am not that fond of Shakespeare, so I think that prejudiced me. The cat episode was cute, and thought provoking for me. I plan on continuing with this series and am excited to move on to book 4.

I always think of this as my least favourite volume, but I'm not sure that's actually true. I love all four stories--"Façade" might be my favourite, despite what I told @TobeyTheScavengerMonk the other day--and I appreciate how these seemingly standalone pieces slot into the wider narrative. Three of them directly foreshadow major plot points, and I ain't convinced the fourth is as discrete as it appears. This is good, subtle stuff. #comics

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Y‘know, despite the gorgeous Charles Vess art on Midsummer, I think Façade is my favorite too. Partly because I love the Sandman moments where DC universe characters pop up, but mainly because it is a damn good story. And speaking of Calliope, you know what I always thought would be cool? An anthology where different authors write stories based on all the ideas her captor starts spouting. 6y

In one of the SEX CRIMINALS trades, Fraction & Zdarsky moan about how the DREAM COUNTRY back matter is a script to one of the stories they JUST READ, and what the hell? I felt vindicated, because I've skipped the script during every reread for that exact reason.

Comic scripts for familiar material are kinda fun when you've never seen one before. After that... well. #comics
