Our Kind of Cruelty
Our Kind of Cruelty: A Novel | Araminta Hall
"This is simply one of the nastiest and most disturbing thrillers I've read in years. In short: I loved it, right down to the utterly chilling final line." Gillian Flynn A spellbinding, darkly twisted novel about desire and obsession, and the complicated lines between truth and perception, Our Kind of Cruelty introduces Araminta Hall, a chilling new voice in psychological suspense. This is a love story. Mikes love story. Mike Hayes fought his way out of a brutal childhood and into a quiet, if lonely life, before he met Verity Metcalf. V taught him about love, and in return, Mike has dedicated his life to making her happy. Hes found the perfect home, the perfect job, hes sculpted himself into the physical ideal V has always wanted. He knows theyll be blissfully happy together. It doesnt matter that she hasnt been returning his emails or phone calls. It doesnt matter that she says shes marrying Angus. Its all just part of the secret game they used to play. If Mike watches V closely, hell see the signs. If he keeps track of her every move hell know just when to come to her rescue...

This was very intense! I really enjoyed it and neglected all other books because I needed to know what happened.

That being said, I didn‘t love it completely because I kept waiting for at least one chapter with the female‘s POV…But that also could just be me wanting something that was not what the author wanted for the story that she chose to write 😅

This book was extremely twisted and I enjoyed every dark and creepy moment. But I'll warn you in advance that there's no answers regarding Mike and V's relationship or any clue as to whether V wanted Mike to behave the way he did. It wasn't until I read the authors note that I understood. I really enjoyed this book because it's about as dark and obsessive as a relationship can get. ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨

Just meh. Mike loves Verity. Well, he‘s obsessed with her, really. He thinks her marriage to another man is all part of a game they used to play. I‘ve definitely read more compelling books about this sort of thing.

I ended up liking this one at the end. BUT. The Part One was so freaking boring. I found myself daydreaming, sighing, counting pages. Once Part Two started, the book was fabulous. I understand why the author needed to construct the book the way she did, I just didn't like it. I can't think of a better way but the drag of the beginning really made me want to DNF. I'm glad I didn't but I wouldn't read it again. ⭐⭐⭐

This has been on my TBR for a long time. I finally got to it this weekend. Mike loved Verity. They play a sick game of Crave. This game involves Verity flirting with other men and Mike rushing in to confront the other man. Then Verity leaves mike and marries another man. Mike thinks they are still playing Crave. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wow 5 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 Psychological thriller to the max. For the first 5 chapters you have to figure out who the narrator is and who and what is....V slowly the twisted sex story gets unfolded with rememberable lines that make you read it 3 times just to make sure what you read was correct. Shocking and thrilling from beginning to end. They play a game called CRAVE and you have to figure that out too. #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

This book! I tried to outsmart the author and thought I knew it all. The relationship between Mike and V was too intense, the narrator too inreliable. And suddenly the plot turns and it isn‘t about Mike anymore, it‘s not even a thriller anymore, it‘s about our society today. Wow. A great ride. The only thing I can‘t understand about V is why she kept wearing that necklace.

I think Caroline Kepnes‘ YOU has ruined me, because I think I feel far too much sympathy for Mike in this story. I should just think he‘s crazy. But I just can‘t dismiss his idea that this is all a game to V. Why did she tell him Angus would be out of town? Why is she still wearing that necklace? Why didn‘t she call the cops - ever? It gives Mike enough to obsess over her forever.
A well-written, intense ride.

#LilithJuly I know I‘ve used this book before, but I‘ll stand behind it (again) When it comes to #FoolishGames Mike and V set the bar pretty high 😜 This thriller belongs along the lines of Gone Girl. Twisted and psychotic and maybe not quite believable but still a slow motion train wreck that‘s hard to stop watching/reading.

I'm going to have to think about this book for a while. It's an incredibly slow burn, but I'm pretty sure the payoff at the end is worth it. I think. The writing is absolutely amazing and I'm a sucker for an unreliable narrator, but I just can't decide if I liked the ending or if it was a letdown.

I find it difficult to recommend this book. The main character, Mike, is written in such a way that makes him not believable. I don't believe this character could become so successful in a corporate environment by the time he's 30.

I also have difficulty believing V would date him for as long as she did.

And... part 1was much too long. We get more than enough of Mike's insane point of view in about 1/3 of that section.

This is so creepy & disturbing. The narrator is so very obviously disturbed, but yet there is a rational line that underpins his delusion. It would be terrifying to have this person fixated on you-even when you can clearly see how he got where he did. In some ways, his lawyer is just as disturbing when you see how he utilizes his clients delusions rather than getting him the help he obviously needs. This story, for me underlines #believewomen

The premise of this novel was great (and I love a good ol' fashioned unreliable narrator!). But the execution was just way off. The author wants us to go inside the twisted, tormented mind of Mike who can't seem to stop stalking the ex he's convinced is still in love with him. Parts of this just dragged on and on instead of the quick pace you'd expect from a thriller. This whole book just left me frustrated...and bored. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley

I actually really enjoyed this book. However, I feel like it was misrepresented as a thriller. Yes, it was a story of obsession, but I feel it was more a commentary on the justice system failing women and the kind of man who is severely mentally ill, but hides it well. I did like it for what I got from it.
