You?ll also find advice on how to tackle common reading ailments ? such as what to do when you feel overwhelmed by the number of books in the world, or if you have a tendency to give up halfway through. When read at the right moment in your life, a novel can ? quite literally ? change it, and The Novel Cure is a reminder of that power. Written with authority, passion and wit, here is a fresh approach to finding new books to read, and an enchanting way to revisit the books on your shelves.

I love when it's finally time to open up that book that's been sitting on your shelf for years! I don't know how or why the "right" time presents itself, but who am I to question it? Digging into this title with some brandy-spiked eggnog. Bibliotherapy indeed! #CurrentlyReading #BooksAndBooze #bibliotherapy

This was advertised to me on Facebook today. Has anybody heard of it or done it? I‘m very intrigued by the thought of becoming a bibliotherapist. Which I realize isn‘t a real thing, but it would still be a cool thing to learn about. I‘m very tempted to take the course 🤓

rjsthumbelina I actually have used bibliotherapy with adults with developmental disabilities! The way we did it, we had a book club using a book that dealt with issues that a lot of them were having. Then we'd discuss it weekly and talk through how the characters handled things, how they characters felt about their situations, and how the story related to them. It was fun! Haven't found an opportunity to use it in my current job yet though 4y

I can't remember how I found this one, it might have been on one of my meandering exploring of Goodreads, not sure. So far, I adore this book. I read one book and started another that it recommended, and so far they are both gems. I just wish that it had an index of ailments, not just of authors and titles. This is definitely a work of love.

Hestapleton This my “book slump” book! Even if I‘m not feeling anything it recommends, I‘m reinvigorated flipping through it‘s pages. 5y

This book embraces fiction as a prescription, to soothe our souls, solve our problems, lift our spirits, encourage us to wallow, or remind us of how good we have it.
I love this whimsical dictionary of ailments, and the book suggestions will make your TBR explode! From abandonment to zestlessness, there is ‘Novel‘ suggestion for almost everything!

This book is so amazing! I‘ve got a ton of books to read/buy based on the recommendations for certain ailments. My only quibble is that there were definitely spoilers for some books. This made me laugh so hard! I‘ve never heard of “man flu.”

“Man flu is a miserable illness not just for the victim but for all concerned. Bed rest is essential, and the patient—indeed, ‘victim‘ is probably more apt—will require a great deal of sympathy. The victim should be propped up on soft pillows and provided with mugs of tea, heating pads, meals on trays, the remote control, and messages of support and commiseration regularly.”

JacqMac It‘s the worst! 😂 7y

Bye week started last night... Dallas is off for 5 days, Pens are on break after tonight's game and Leafs are off after their game on Wednesday. All of my teams will be off. 🙁 #readingandlisteningtohockey

writerlibrarian Pens are up 2-1 on Boston. Tanger scored. It's 3-1 Pens. 2nd period is on. Marchand scores it's 3-2. And it is tied 3-3. 4-3 Boston. Now that's a turn over. 5-3 Boston. Not a good 2nd period. Pens score, Malkin, on PP. 5-4. Pens open the 3rd with a goal and tie it 5 all. Marchand got a penalty shot and Murray stopped it. We are in OT. Geno for the win. Man... that was exciting. In OT Pens 6-5 (edited) 7y

#joinin My parents' shelves always deliver something new. This year I found The Novel Cure - an A-Z of literary remedies which is brilliant. The 3 recommended cures for loneliness are Philip Pullman, I, Claudius and the Tales of the City books which are pretty great choices! Happy to give any other remedies for people with a particular symptom!
Shout out to @4thhouseontheleft for making sure Litsy has a #joinin presence this Christmas too!

julesG Interesting book. Any symptom? Insomnia, fatigue, constipation, common cold, Alzheimer's? 7y
alisiakae Thanks for sharing! I would also be curious what the book suggests for insomnia! 😴😴 7y
jhod @julesG ok I'll work my way through! 7y

jhod Ok so for insomnia it says this one should not be read at night unless you're prepared to stay awake - instead pick it up during the day ready for a thorough analysis of why you can't get to sleep through loosely connected characters who all have different sleep issues @julesG @4thhouseontheleft 7y
jhod For nights and restless hours this which will allow you to reside in that heavy pre sleep state which you need to inhabit before gaining entry to full slumber @julesG @4thhouseontheleft 7y
jhod Common colds there are ten - comforting, restorative reads. Also journey to the river sea, the secret lives of bees, Jamaica inn, the lost art of keeping secrets, the age of innocence 7y
jhod Stress @julesG apparently so slim and undaunting in appearance of won't add to your stress, it will have your soul slipping into a state of serenity. It's more or less impossible not to feel peaceful reading it... 7y
julesG Thanks! 😘😘😘😘 7y

This book was great! Witty, punny, well-rounded, and useful!!! It has definitely inflated my TBR by at least 10 books (for now, future ailments will require future cures) and, best of all, it introduced me to books/authors/genres that I probably would never have heard of or considered otherwise!
This book was loaned from the library and immediately went on my Wish-List.

I tend to think I don't like sci-fi/don't read it and yet, that's patently untrue, first example being I've read 3 books on this list and enjoyed them immensely.
Maybe I will start considering it more "speculative" than "science" fiction.

vivastory Which 3 have you read? 7y
Andrea4 @vivastory A Wrinkle in Time, Brave New World, and Never Let Me Go (in that order lol). 7y
vivastory I also don't really think of myself as much of a sci-fi reader, but I've read 6 of the books on the list 7y

vivastory Never Let Me Go is one of the best books I've read this year. I'm hopefully going to read Wrinkle in Time soon. Are you excited for the movie? 7y
Andrea4 @vivastory I liked Never Let Me Go but I was expecting this giant twist and yet guessed what that twist was quite early on; I think it was too hyped up. I am excited for the movie-admittedly the last time I read that I was 12 so it's been awhile, enough to forget probably large portions. I think the movie will bring back childhood feelings 😊 7y
