Beautiful Ruins
Beautiful Ruins | Jess Walter
The No. 1 New York Times BestsellerJess Walter's Beautiful Ruins is a gorgeous, glamorous novel set in 1960s Italy and a modern Hollywood studio. The story begins in 1962. Somewhere on a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and views an apparition: a beautiful woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an American starlet, he soon learns, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away in Hollywood, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot searching for the woman he last saw at his hotel fifty years before.Gloriously inventive, funny, tender and constantly surprising, Beautiful Ruins is a novel full of fabulous and yet very flawed people, all of them striving towards another sort of life, a future that is both delightful and yet, tantalizingly, seems just out of reach.'Magic...A monument to crazy love with a deeply romantic heart' New York Times'A novel shot in sparkly Technicolor' Booklist'Hilarious and compelling' Esquire

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I couldn‘t care less about some characters, but was a little invested in others. A strange combo that made for a slightly boring read about half the time. I think some parts were great, but overall the book is just too long. I‘m glad to finally get this book read and off my shelves!

While there were some laugh-out-loud spots in this novel, overall I found it boring and overly sentimental. I only finished it because work has been exhausting and all I can do when I come home is put on my headphones and space out to an audiobook. A boring audiobook is perfect for this because I don't care if I miss details.

This was too long, slow at times, but overall a nice weaving of interconnected lives over decades. It‘s a love story of course. Starring beautiful Italy, a tiny fishing village, famous & not so famous movie stars, and more.

This is a soft pick for me, sometimes I enjoyed the story & sometimes I wasn‘t excited to pick it back up. A lot of characters intertwined, interesting, but I didn‘t connect to anyone besides sweet Pasquale. I wonder how Richard Burton & Elizabeth Taylor would feel about their portrayal in the story (esp Burton)? #bookspin for November

Such a layered experience! Stories within stories, non-fiction within fiction, and some twists! It took me a minute to get into it, and I expected it to be a ‘beach read‘ but it turned out to have more depth than I thought it would. Lovely surprise!

If you‘re patient, this is an enchanting book. A story that goes back and forth from the 60s to present day with a cast of likable characters. My favorite part was the talk of inflated language, why cheapen the word “amazing” by using it on something as simple as a sandwich. Book #43 in 2022

3⭐️. I found there to be lots of little laugh out loud moments in this story. Might not be what the author wanted me to walk away from the book saying, but there it is. I enjoyed parts of the story and hated other parts. Learning about the movie Cleopatra and the huge issues they had in filming it was very interesting.
Will put this in the mail tomorrow for #LMPBC

Finished this one today over my lunch break. #LunchTimeReading It was a soft pick for me. It started out slowly and was inconsistent afterward. It does; however, have a good heart to the story and I wanted to know what happened to the characters. It definitely delivers on that last part. I loved this book. So many different yarns, yet author Jess Walter skillfully knits them all into a warm and delicate cozy blanket full of care, humor & love. Narration was wonderful although I felt the book dragged on too much at certain parts. I‘m currently listening to Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter. I have 10 hours and 38 minutes left in the audiobook. I don‘t know what to think about this audiobook. I‘m in the middle of the second chapter and I‘m not liking it very much right now. I‘ve read reviews saying that this book gets better but other people have also said that it doesn‘t get better. After I finish this chapter, I will decide whether I want to finish this or not.

I finished The Last Days Of August by Jon Ronson. My next #tbrjarpick is...Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter. Here‘s what it‘s about:”The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat.” This sounds interesting.

I picked this up because I was in desperate need of an audiobook for a long, solo car trip, and this was recommended both as lovely book with an amazing narrator (Edoardo Ballerini). I was not disappointed. The story was sweet and lovely, and Ballerini made it come alive in ways I don‘t think I could‘ve done for myself if I was reading the text. Add this to your summer audiobook TBR.
