After the Eclipse
After the Eclipse: A Mother's Murder, a Daughter's Search | Sarah Perry
136 posts | 80 read | 2 reading | 198 to read
A fierce memoir of a mothers murder, a daughters coming-of-age in the wake of immense loss, and her mission to know the woman who gave her life. When Sarah Perry was twelve, she saw a partial eclipse of the sun, an event she took as a sign of good fortune for her and her mother, Crystal. But that brief moment of darkness ultimately foreshadowed a much larger one: two days later, Crystal was murdered in their home in rural Maine, just a few feet from Sarahs bedroom. The killer escaped unseen; it would take the police twelve years to find him, time in which Sarah grew into adulthood, struggling with abandonment, police interrogations, and the effort of rebuilding her life when so much had been lost. Through it all she would dream of the eventual trial, a convictionall her questions finally answered. But after the trial, Sarahs questions only grew. She wanted to understand her mothers life, not just her final hours, and so she began a personal investigation, one that drew her back to Maine, taking her deep into the abiding darkness of a small American town. Told in searing prose, After the Eclipse is a luminous memoir of uncomfortable truth and terrible beauty, an exquisite memorial for a mother stolen from her daughter, and a blazingly successful attempt to cast light on her life once more.

I‘m almost certain that this was my favorite read this year. It's a memoir with a mystery tied in which completely engrossed me. I took my time reading this and I am glad I did.

Sarah Perry openly shares about her mother‘s murder when she was 12 years of age. She structures her story to fluctuate between her life before and after her mother‘s death. To compound her tragedy, she was bounced between family members often at a moment‘s notice. She only felt accepted by them instead of feeling wanted by them. The quality of the narration definitely brought about a somber vibe that added to the intensity of the story. #MountTBR

Heartbreaking. A story of how a young girl's mother gets murdered almost in front of her and her life after. Just so sad, so be prepared.

Such an incredibly sad but beautiful memoir about a daughter and the murder of her mother. Author does a good job of weaving the events of “before” and “after” the murder. It can get a little confusing on who was who and all the names, but you eventually figure it out.

At OUTSpoken, a day of author presentations and discussions of LGBTQ+ life.

brandybear22 Was good? This talk? 6y
kgriffith @brandybear22 it was. She grew up in the same small town as me so there were some really specific similarities. 6y
brandybear22 "told in searing prose" it seems this would be a good read. A story of "uncomfortable truth and terrible beauty," seems like maybe an option to read and discuss some month...? 6y
See All 12 Comments
kgriffith @brandybear22 Her queerness isn‘t central, and that‘s deliberate — she sought out an editor who was with her when she said that she didn‘t want to highlight her coming out bc that‘d be a very different narrative, one that assumes and caters to a straight audience. (I really liked that about her) 6y
kgriffith @brandybear22 So, maybe not for queer book club unless there‘s a specific desire to read by-queer, but not primarily related-to-being-queer works? But for fans of memoir, absolutely; I don‘t read much memoir so I‘m glad to have one I feel I can recommend. 6y
brandybear22 @kgriffith Well, I will put on my 'to read' list (ha, just to see that I can!). I think this book has popped up maybe a couple of different ways, making it on my radar lately. 6y
kgriffith @brandybear22 Well look at you, getting all up in Litsy‘s features... 😘 (edited) 6y
brandybear22 @kgriffith (I am going to have to figure out what to do with the two separate lists though... ) 6y
kgriffith @brandybear22 (there‘s have read, reading, and to-read, though some of us are advocating for additional features that would categorize “to-read” a bit more specifically) 6y
brandybear22 @kgriffith (referring to my LT mix tape) 6y
brandybear22 @kgriffith (but thanks, yes, I'm surrounded by lists) 6y
kgriffith @brandybear22 Oh! Ah, yes, lists abound. I‘m happy to transcribe any and all to post-its, if that‘d be helpful 😊 6y

“These are all small pieces, like shards of colored glass in a kaleidoscope; I spin and combine them to make a glowing, shifting picture. But they are finite in number. I cannot know my mother as others know their parents - I will never have an adult conversation with her.”

Perry‘s memoir about her mother‘s murder is heartbreaking and ugly, but it‘s also a lovely tribute to her mother‘s life and their relationship. An easy 5 stars.

Look at me, slowly getting through my old BOTMs!

Equal parts true crime and gripping memoir—I had a hard time putting the book down. Sarah Perry was 12 years old when she awoke in the middle of the night to the sounds of her mom being viciously murdered in the next room. This well-written book is the story of her mom, their lives together before that night, the crime and it‘s aftermath. I loved her voice and her message. Very powerful.

Sarah Perry tells her story here, of being 12 and present in the house while her mother was murdered, alongside the aftermath and her family‘s history. This book is completely mesmerizing, but I had to repeatedly put it down because it‘s so emotional. Perry manages to infuse every word with the anger, fear, sadness, and disorientation of a lost and grieving teen. I can‘t recommend it enough. #botm

Devastatingly beautiful, a heartfelt homage written by a daughter who lost her mother and her own identity to a brutal killing. Crystal Perry was murdered in her home, while 12yr old Sara slept just feet away. This is Sarah‘s memoir of the events, before & after and her quest to honor her mother‘s memory. I‘m not sure how I feel about the immediate family but I‘m sure Crystal is so proud of the young woman Sarah became. Thanks, Steph 💕

Sarah Perry was only 12 when her mother was attacked and murdered in their home. It was 12 years before her killer was arrested. This memoir is both Perry's retelling of the crime, it's impact on her life and the eventual trial and her attempt to reconstruct who her mother was as a person and deepen her connection of the woman she only knew as a mom. Very well done and affecting. Perry is a talented writer.

I own the Sarah Perry book, but am tempted to pick up the kindle version as well. Does anyone else do this when ebook versions go on sale? (I‘m currently reading I‘ll Be Gone in the Dark and it is phenomenal.)
