Sophie's Choice
Sophie's Choice | William Styron
Styrons most impressive performance. . . . Belongs on that small shelf reserved for American masterpieces. Washington Post Book World Winner of the 1980 National Book Award, Sophies Choice is William Styrons classic novel of love, survival, and regret, set in Brooklyn in the wake of the Second World War. The novel centers on three characters: Stingo, a sexually frustrated aspiring novelist; Nathan, his charismatic but violent Jewish neighbor; and Sophie, an Auschwitz survivor who is Nathans lover. Their entanglement in one anothers lives will build to a stirring revelation of agonizing secrets that will change them forever. Poetic in its execution, and epic in its emotional sweep, Sophies Choice explores the good and evil of humanity through Stingos burgeoning worldliness, Nathans volatile personality, and Sophies tragic past. Mixing elements from Styrons own experience with themes of the Holocaust and the history of slavery in the American South, the novel is a profound and haunting human drama. The result is Styron at the pinnacle of his literary brilliance. This ebook features a new illustrated biography of William Styron, including original letters, rare photos, and never-before-seen documents from the Styron family and the Duke University Archives.

Yesterday‘s scores from the book swap after getting the go ahead to go back on pointe shoes from the physiotherapist. I had the day off work so I spent time organising my new place and snuck in a quick dip at the beach at the end of the day plus a few glasses of champagne and watched a great episode of Gardening Australia.

marleed I recently thrifted an old hardcopy of this book. I really want to get to it. I track my books 9 at a time and I‘m finally disciplined to read at least one of my books for every 2 lib loan. I‘m thinking in 2020 I should try to include at least one book with a 10+ year publishing date. 5y
EadieB @marleed I am amazed at your discipline. I have to stop reading so many library books and concentrate on the ones I own. I think that will be my goal for 2020. I think you should read Sophie's Choice soon as I think you will definitely enjoy it. 5y

Disappointed in how this has gone so far. I think reading this book during #24in48 was just a little too heavy. Rethinking my #reversereadathon stack for next weekend.

Bookgoil I do think you need lighter materials for a heavy readathon. I binged graphic novels and some novels that had action and moved quickly! 6y
Andrew65 It is key to have the right books. 6y
CareBear @Bookgoil @Andrew65 you‘re so right! Graphic novels are a great suggestion, Kristen! 6y
Daisey Yes, my first couple of readathons I tried long books and/or ones with serious topics and it‘s not necessarily a good fit. If there‘s one in the stack you definitely need shorter and lighter reads to balance it out. 6y
acktopus @Bookgoil I got the same tips from my wife before starting - definitely the only way I got to 24h. Even slotting in one havier book was sort of pushing it for me. 6y

3-6-18: 10th finished book of 2018! It took me a whole month but the subject matter was. Or what I expected and then it became heart wrenching at times so I needed breaks. And now, against my better judgement, I'll be watching the movie version starring Meryl Streep. She won the Oscar for her portrayal of Sophie. 📖#️⃣1️⃣0️⃣

I bailed!! Another DNF for me this year! 😩 I couldn‘t finish it. I struggled with Stingo‘s overly horny perspective and again, a detached feeling from characters. 😭

Kaye Don‘t give up. 7y
Tamra I haven‘t read it, but the movie with Meryl Streep will take out your heart and stomp all over it. I recall in an interview somewhere that in that well known fateful scene, the tension on the set was so thick, the baby cried spontaneously. 😟😣 (edited) 7y

I know this will seem like sacrilege to many, but I am torn between a pick and so-so. I wanted more of Sophie and less of Stingo's adolescent whining. And Styron's prose was overwrought. And I say that as a staunch fan of Dickens and Hardy. I had to take many breaks from this to be able to finish it.

"The truth, the truth! Who even knows what is the truth?" My favorite line from one of my favorite books. I've read only one other Styron (Lie Down in Darkness) but this one must be his best. If you've only seen the movie, you're missing so much of the story.

This was a great book. Writing about the horrors of WWII can be challenging, but Styron's cast of characters is interesting. Also a post-modern sensibility in how he references his past works in his own narrative (just got done reading 4 Styron novels in a row). Heartbreaking and worth the time.
