Broken Monsters
Broken Monsters | Lauren Beukes
"Scary as hell and hypnotic. I couldn't put it down...I'd grab it if I were you." --Stephen King A criminal mastermind creates violent tableaus in abandoned Detroit warehouses in Lauren Beukes's new genre-bending novel of suspense. Detective Gabriella Versado has seen a lot of bodies. But this one is unique even by Detroit's standards: half boy, half deer, somehow fused together. As stranger and more disturbing bodies are discovered, how can the city hold on to a reality that is already tearing at its seams? If you're Detective Versado's geeky teenage daughter, Layla, you commence a dangerous flirtation with a potential predator online. If you're desperate freelance journalist Jonno, you do whatever it takes to get the exclusive on a horrific story. If you're Thomas Keen, known on the street as TK, you'll do what you can to keep your homeless family safe--and find the monster who is possessed by the dream of violently remaking the world. If Lauren Beukes's internationally bestselling The Shining Girls was a time-jumping thrill ride through the past, her Broken Monsters is a genre-redefining thriller about broken cities, broken dreams, and broken people trying to put themselves back together again.

This was very disturbing, thought provoking & truly strange.
This thriller set in Detroit follows a varied cast of characters as a grisly murder impacts them &their communities with an eye towards art, social media & societal issues.

Readergrrl I thought the same! Kind of disturbing, but in a well-developed way, and I‘m still thinking about it. Admittedly, I was speed reading it so I didn‘t write as many comments as I normally do. I have a teen daughter and the scenes where the girls were “playing” with the online creepers had me sweating!! 6mo
5feet.of.fury @Readergrrl the girls were stressing me out! But vigilante teens in cat masks - iconic! 6mo
5feet.of.fury @Readergrrl The ending got a little Stephen King in a “this is really happening somehow, I guess” type of way, but it was good. 6mo

I reread this earlier this week and I still liked it. The first 100pgs is hard because there are so many characters are introduced but Beukes threads them masterfully together against the biggest character in here, the city of Detroit. This was wonderful, and scary, and I went to a horror bookclub tonight at an Albuquerque library where wonderful people had some really thoughtful things to say. Pick!

Centique Ooooh horror book club might be the best book club 🙌🧙‍♀️🧙🏻‍♂️😈 9mo

#96 - next in the Sookie Stackhouse series (GR lists all the collections that contain Sookie short stories as part of the series, so I‘m reading all of those too, and have really liked some of the stories from other authors). I actually only have 1 or 2 Sookie novels left.
#84 - This Is Where I Leave You (I‘ve seen and enjoyed the movie)

If I hadn't loved the back end of this so much this would have been a so so because it took forever for me to really get into the story. But once things started to really get the fantastical horror vibe I was totally sucked in. I think on the surface this is just a weird murder tale but it goes into so much more depth about social media, perception, and art so it was really intriguing. But it took over half way to really get going.

The past couple days I‘ve been struggling to make myself read this but suddenly today I was finally able to get lost in it for a while. I finally have reached more of the fantasy elements so it‘s less of a slog and more of what I‘m into. I‘m curious to see how the different POV threads will weave together if that‘s even where this goes. I‘m also sad Callie didn‘t join me until after I put the book aside.

Starting my next read. I‘m a little unsure since the blurb calls it a thriller, I tend to read only genre fic and this was in the general fic section of the library, and I‘m not sure I can do serious business fiction right now. However the group I‘m reading this for shelved it as fantasy so I‘m willing to take the risk.

Enchanted_Bibliophile It's more Horror Fantasy than General Fiction. Think Stephen King, Joe Hill ... 4y

Somebody get HBO to make this into the next sci-fi psychological thriller hit series! It was dark and moody and then it took.a.turn. I loved the whole creepy concept.

Reggie There are a lot of different things going on in here. I cried when the MC dropped her daughter off somewhere near the end and the passage makes you think it‘s the last time she‘ll see her. And then I was horrified when the birds came out of that girl‘s chest. Yikes!! This book was sooo good. 4y
Jilly6183 @Reggie Yes! And I was really hooked (if I wasn‘t already) when the flowers bloomed in the pottery shop. That was the first real evidence that something truly supernatural was going on and it wasn‘t just in Clayton‘s mind. 4y

Written by a young South African this story is set in Detroit. She falls into cliches about our great city, but some visuals are correct.

There‘s a serial killer loose in the city. Bodies are found with a macabre twist: humans and extras grafted together to create “art”. The end falls into the supernatural. Not for the faint of heart

As an aside, keep the people of Detroit in your prayers.

Finished this morning. I enjoyed the first half or 3/4 and then the supernatural element just made me feel like I was really missing something. I generally enjoy supernatural twists and inexplicable events but in this particular book, it made it hard to get through the climax and muddied the otherwise compelling stories (IMO).

Wow this was a wild ride! It started out as a “So-So” and ended as a PICK 👍 hadn‘t read a single review, so was completely taken off guard by the thrilling ending.

Is there a genre for contemporary horror? .. because this is it! I didn‘t “love” any character but thought the writing was great. POV chapters told by the cop, her daughter, the hipster journalist, a homeless man and the killer weave a gripping story I really enjoyed!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reggie I thought this was a horror Valentine to Detroit. And I write this on a lot of reviews but oof!!! When the birds come out of the girl‘s chest!!!😱 6y

A good book, in my opinion, but not the stand out I was expecting from other reviews. Interesting but I didn't feel much tension as much of the foreshadowing actually revealed plot points much to easily. Though it was a short book it still felt as if the story wandered about needlessly.
