Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets | J.K. Rowling
"'There is a plot, Harry Potter. A plot to make most terrible things happen at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry this year.'" Harry Potter's summer has included the worst birthday ever, doomy warnings from a house-elf called Dobby, and rescue from the Dursleys by his friend Ron Weasley in a magical flying car! Back at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for his second year, Harry hears strange whispers echo through empty corridors - and then the attacks start. Students are found as though turned to stone ... Dobby's sinister predictions seem to be coming true.

Book two finished at 38 years old. I felt the need to rebel in my younger years and not read Harry Potter, now that I am older I need to see what I missed. 3⭐

ShyBookOwl I made a similar decision at 28. Having never read them or seen the movies, I decided I wanted to see what the big deal was. I read the first 4, but bailed on the 5th. I enjoyed them, but I think I missed my window for developing any strong emotional attachment. That, or I just didn't get it the way so many do 🤷🏽‍♀️ 3d

My least favourite of the illustrated versions - only because I HATE the spiders!!!

#potteraday

Linsy Agreed! And slugs and a giant snake. He did it beautifully, but it's all the nasty things! 😱 4d
janeycanuck @Linsy Agreed. And it‘s so much harder to read with your eyes closed - so I had to cover up some of the illustrations with my hands to make it through 😂 4d

Oh, how I love Dobby!

So excellent, once again. The illustrations really gave me a different experience though. I thought a whole lot more about magical creatures seeing them in front of me. Aragog though, and that Basilisk! Made the slugs look like child's play. Jim Kay is a genius!

Thanks to everyone for reading along! I'm seriously having so much fun with this. We'll start Book 3 Monday! I'll post a schedule soon. ⚡💕✨

Eggbeater Thank you so much for hosting. I am having so much fun! 💕 6d
Readswithcoffee Yay! Thanks!!! 6d
janeycanuck I‘m so far behind... because I know the illustrations of the spiders are coming and they creep me out so much!!!! 6d
Linsy @Eggbeater @Readswithcoffee I'm so glad! Talking to y'all about HP is highlight of my days. ⚡ 4d
Linsy @janeycanuck The fear is real!!! I get you. I seriously hated that part (as much as I acknowledge that Jim Kay did an amazing job). 4d

I'm really enjoying re-reading these books one chapter at a time. The slower pace makes me pay more attention and see things I've never notice before.
I love how Rowling adds all these little details in these early books that foreshadow what the end will bring. She truly is a master!

#PotterADay #HarryPotter

Linsy Yes she is! Rereading the early ones reminds me just how great her plotting is, and how early it starts. 6d
Enchanted_Bibliophile @Linsy I really like how Harry already in this book ask if Voldemort left a part of himself in Harry. Like in the diary. So she's actually telling us in the second book that Harry is a Horcrux. How insanely awesome is that? 6d
Linsy @Enchanted_Bibliophile That's a super good point. Shows how much she knew and planned so early on. We just need to bow to her. So few books can boast plotting like that, even in big, planned out series. 🙌 4d

I'm behind! Got a bit distracted with other reading, and at the climax of all places. But I'm back just in time though!

Tom Riddle is super creepy here. He always underestimates Dumbledore though. Needs to learn from that.

“Riddle began to laugh ... 'This is what Dumbledore sends his defender! A songbird and an old hat! Do you feel brave, Harry Potter? Do you feel safe now?'“

Myrtle blushes silver! Love that detail. #potteraday

Linsy Could Ginny be part Horcrux? If a horcrux pumped part of itself into her? How do we know she's clean of Riddle? Would destroying the diary really destroy any remnants in her? Or is she like Harry now?? (edited) 7d
Scochrane26 @linsy I could be wrong, but I think Voldemort himself has to create the horcrux. 6d
Linsy @Scochrane26 Your probably right. The wording of how she poured herself into the horcrux and then he began to pour a bit into her was eerie though. (edited) 6d

Re-reading these stories with a group at chapter a day is so much fun because I pay attention to all the intricate details I missed before. J.K. Rowling is really good at foreshadowing to set up future books. Also, there is a lot of humor that breaks up the "scary" parts of the book that is not as apparent in the movie. And endearing Dobby is one of my favorites. I got this print of him at LeakyCon. #potteraday

Daisey I‘m not participating in this particular readalong, but I know exactly what you mean about savoring the details in this kind of a chapter a day read. It generally really helps me focus on details and catch things I‘ve missed in the past! 7d
Readswithcoffee Agree! 7d
Linsy Yes! It definitely helps me savor it more. I love that print!! I agree about the movie vs. books. They were able to get all of the major plot points in the movie, but that meant there wasn't much time for the humor, and that's a huge part of this book's charm. ✨ 6d

Day 18: Dobby's Reward

And that brings us to another summer and back to the Muggle World 😑

Can't wait to jump into our third year.

Again a huge thanks to @Linsy for hosting our #PotterADay #ReadAlong

Rediscovering #HarryPotter in ways I totally forgot I knew him.

Yoshi-and-a-book ❤️ Dobby 7d
Scochrane26 Dobby ❤️❤️❤️ 7d
Linsy It is different reading one chapter at a time like this. I've never done that before. Makes me focus on different things! And I notice far more detail. I always wished my college had a Harry Potter course. Now I feel like we've made our own! 6d
Enchanted_Bibliophile @Linsy That would've been awesome. But I think our way is better. As soon as I'm forced to read something I tend to dislike it 6d

Day 17: The Heir of Slytherin

Action packed and so full of information.
This is my favourite chapter.
Fawkes, the sword and Harry's courage.

#PotterADay #ReadAlong #HarryPotter

Linsy Really? I love this chapter, but I always get so stressed out, lol. I tend to love the resolution chapters in this series. I'm a woos! (Apparently not how you spell wuss, lol. 😅) (edited) 6d
Enchanted_Bibliophile I love the action and the suspense. The on-the-edge-of-your-seat, reading so fast you miss words kind of thing 😁 I judge authors very hard on chapters like this, and Rowling wins hands down with this one. 6d

“In the absence of his usually toothy grin he looked weak-chinned and weedy.“ Best description of Lockhart, ever.

I loved imagining Harry trying to speak parseltongue. Open, Harry says, checking with Ron, who hears him trying to hiss it out. Nope, you just spoke English, bro. 😂

I loved this chapter! There were just so many little things -- like them hiding in the cloak closet -- that I'd forgotten about. So glad we're doing this! #potteraday

This is an intense chapter. The reader is given a lot of important information. However, on the lighter side, there is this quote; “Harry looked down at the pair of white rabbits he was supposed to be turning into slippers. What had he learned so far this year? He couldn‘t seem to think of anything that would be useful in an exam.” (Just what all school teachers hope their students feel, right?😀) #potteraday

Linsy Haha, so relatable! I remember gathering all of my notes before a test in college going, did I learn any if this?! 6d

Day 16: The Chamber of Secrets

I like how the teachers team up on Lockhart and half force him to admit he is not so brave as he's pretending to be. And how he truly isn't brave at all but just a sly fox, using memory charms on the poor folks how are the true heroes. O, and the moment his spell back fires.. I'm just sorry he's to out of his mind to know what happened to him...by his own hand.

#PotterADay #ReadAlong #HarryPotter

Linsy Me too. But the teachers v vs. Lockhart was excellent. 6d

I forgot how charming that car plotline is. But the spiders!!! I did not need a full page illustration of their creepy hairyness, I really did not. I'd share a pic of it, but I like you guys. That would be rude. 😱 #potteraday

GingerAntics Thanks for withholding all the spider legs. Ugh!!! I also enjoyed the charming storyline with the car. 1w
Enchanted_Bibliophile But the art ... It's spectacular! All those spiders so perfectly done, they look so real 😂 1w
Linsy @Enchanted_Bibliophile They are, it's true. Jim Kay is amazing!!! But giant spiders! They looked so real I didnt want to turn the page because I'd have to touch them, lol. 1w

I love how brave Ron is for Hermione in this chapter. He braves his biggest fear just to learn something, anything that might help save is friend.

We're so close to the end I just want to continue reading ...😁 (puzzle pieces falling into place)

Cornelius Fudge! His name always makes me hungry. #potteraday

“Neville Longbottom had been sent letters from all the witches and wizards in his family, all giving him different advice on what to choose.“

It's a small detail, but I liked the reference to Neville's extended family. You get the impression that they're ashamed of him in parts, but they clearly all care. Also, there's something about a Wizarding extended family that sounds wonderful.

GingerAntics I was thinking that, too. lol Neville is loved. 2w

My favorite detail in this chapter is Professor Sprout‘s happiness with the Mandrakes throwing a “loud and raucous party in greenhouse three.” “The moment they start trying to move into each other‘s pots, we‘ll know they‘re fully mature.” How clever is this??? #potteraday

Enchanted_Bibliophile I also love that little detail 1w

My favorite detail in this chapter is Lockhart using dwarfs dressed as cupids to deliver singing valentines. “I‘ve got a musical message to deliver to ‘Arry Potter in person,” he said, twanging his harp in a threatening sort of way.” Again, Rowling uses the silliness of this detail to offset the serious info she gives us later in the chapter. Also, I love the device she uses to show us a critical flashback. She is a master storyteller. #potteraday

Linsy Agreed!! I love that the dwarves are so grumpy throughout. It's priceless. 💕 2w

Day14: Cornelius Fudge

Firstly Jim Kay is a brilliant illustrator!

"When in doubt, go to the library."

This is one of those chapters where I don't want to stop reading...
Hermione fot attacked, and obviously clicked something when Harry heard the voice again. Hagrid is in trouble but tell them to follow the spiders. And Dumbledore is not there to protect the school anymore...
And now I have to wait for tomorrow ?
#PotterADay #ReadAlong

Enchanted_Bibliophile O and poor Percy is in shock: "Percy's in shock," George told Harry quietly. "That Ravenclaw girl girl- Penelope Clearwater she's a prefect. I don't think he thought the monster would dare attack a prefect." But we know isn't not the true reason he's feeling out of it? 2w
Linsy @Enchanted_Bibliophile True! I love reading these details in the reread. I just believed her hook, line and sinker the first time, lol. (edited) 6d
Linsy I love the Prof Sprout illustration! The depictions of the greenhouses are my favorite. 6d

@Linsy I‘m so glad you posted a schedule for #PotterADay—I couldn‘t remember whether I‘d read a chapter today or not!

Linsy So glad it helped! It hadn't even thought about the horcrux thing here!!! So very true. It's eerie how accurate that is when you think of the other horcruxes. 2w
