He was historys most creative genius. What secrets can he teach us? The author of the acclaimed bestsellers Steve Jobs, Einstein, and Benjamin Franklin brings Leonardo da Vinci to life in this exciting new biography. Based on thousands of pages from Leonardos astonishing notebooks and new discoveries about his life and work, Walter Isaacson weaves a narrative that connects his art to his science. He shows how Leonardos genius was based on skills we can improve in ourselves, such as passionate curiosity, careful observation, and an imagination so playful that it flirted with fantasy. He produced the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and technology. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry. His ability to stand at the crossroads of the humanities and the sciences, made iconic by his drawing of Vitruvian Man, made him historys most creative genius. His creativity, like that of other great innovators, came from having wide-ranging passions. He peeled flesh off the faces of cadavers, drew the muscles that move the lips, and then painted historys most memorable smile. He explored the math of optics, showed how light rays strike the cornea, and produced illusions of changing perspectives in The Last Supper. Isaacson also describes how Leonardos lifelong enthusiasm for staging theatrical productions informed his paintings and inventions. Leonardos delight at combining diverse passions remains the ultimate recipe for creativity. So, too, does his ease at being a bit of a misfit: illegitimate, gay, vegetarian, left-handed, easily distracted, and at times heretical. His life should remind us of the importance of instilling, both in ourselves and our children, not just received knowledge but a willingness to question itto be imaginative and, like talented misfits and rebels in any era, to think different.

I nearly broke down and bought this awesome Italian set of books (5 total) about Leonardo DaVinci in English when I visited the bookstore nearby. Just too darned heavy. So I took a photo. Maybe some place in the states sells Italian-published books

Today I learned that the king of France may have cradled da Vinci in his arms as the elderly artist died. After da Vinci delivered a short lecture on the probable causes of his own death.

The Last Supper, both in its creation and in its current state, becomes not just an example of Leonardo‘s genius but also a metaphor for it. It was innovative in its art and too innovative in its methods. The conception was brilliant but the execution flawed. The emotional narrative is profound but slightly mysterious, and the current state of the painting adds another thin veil of mystery to the ones that so often shroud Leonardo‘s life and work.

Da Vinci's to-do list:

* Describe the tongue of the woodpecker
* Go every Saturday to the hot bath where you will see naked men
* Inflate the lungs of a pig and observe whether they increase in width and in length, or only in width

A masterful biography of Leonardo da Vinci. More comprehensive than I needed, but the sense of completeness & attention to detail is valuable & apt for its subject. I learnt much & have new appreciation for Leonardo as artist & thinker. I‘m inspired by his genius (from curiosity & observation), but less so by the fact that he never finished anything. He was a diva & unprofessional. It‘s a testament to Renaissance Italy that he had loyal patrons.

Simona Extremely well researched book indeed! I have read it a few years ago and - it is still one of my favourites biographies. If you are in the mood for another well researched book about fascinating person (edited) 4y
Simona Smith did a excellent job with all the myths surrounding Rasputin. 4y
ChaoticMissAdventures I really enjoy Isaacson's work. It always feels like much more than I needed on a person, but I am amazed at the research he does and how he pulls everything together. 4y
Abailliekaras @Simona thank you for the recommendation! @ChaoticMissAdventures he really is good at turning it into an engaging read. ☺️ 4y

This book is nothing more than a Renaissance gossip column, if it can even be called that. Supposedly this book is about Leo‘s notebooks, but they get no more attention than anything else. What this book is really about is Isaacson‘s obsession with Leo‘s sexuality, diet, and looks.
#walterisaacson #leonardodavinci #bail #killmenow #leo #theoriginalrenaissanceman #polymath
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics If you only know Leonardo da Vinci from this book, you would imagine that somewhere, hidden in his notebooks is Leo‘s manifesto on vegetarianism, a declaration of being gay (known as a sodomite and a crime punishable with death in Leo‘s time), and probably a few vain passages on how good looking he was. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 6y
GingerAntics The fact of the matter is that none of that exists. Isaacson has taken the three things we can have no proof of and can only speculate on, and made an entire book about them, mixing in a detailed account of a few pieces of art and a few pages of his notebooks to make the book extra long. If I didn‘t know any better, Isaacson has the hots for Leonardo da Vinci. This book is painful and long winded. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 6y
GingerAntics There are other books on Leonardo that at least give a more balanced view of his life. This book makes it seem like one of the greatest geniuses in history, the man that practically invented the idea of the Renaissance Man, sat around thinking about not eating meat, how good he looked, and having sex with men most of the time. No idea when Isaacson‘s Leonardo had time to do anything ingenious (you know, those things we KNOW for sure he did). #dnf 6y

GingerAntics It would be really awesome if Leonardo da Vinci were an LGBTQ+ hero. Don‘t get me wrong. We just can‘t know if he was. Let‘s just make him a hero for using your brain and accepting everyone as is, the way he seemed to live his life. We need more of that. Then, more amazing people would feel free to come out and the LGBTQ+ community will be rolling in everyday heroes. Just a thought. (edited) 6y
Graywacke Maybe Da Vinci and Time Magazine don‘t mix well. (I did like his book on Steve Jobs) 6y
GingerAntics @Graywacke does Isaacson write for Time Magazine? I did not know that. Generally, the writing in that is better than in this. Hm. I think the problem with this one is that he‘s got a man crush on Leo and that takes over. 6y
GingerAntics @Graywacke I have heard very good things about the Steve Jobs bio. 6y
Graywacke @GingerAntics he was the managing editor of Time. He was also CEO of CNN at some point. 6y
GingerAntics @Graywacke really? I didn‘t know that. That, along with all the good things I‘ve heard about the Steve Jobs boos, is really making me think it‘s just something about Leo. Maybe he‘s not the best subject for Time Magazine and CNN, like you said. 6y

I would really like to see his sources on this. It‘s nothing more than speculation. He MAY have been gay, he equally as likely was what we would call bisexual today. Hell, he could have been secretly having sex with every woman he came into contact with for all we know. I‘ve yet to see anything conclusive on this, but Isaacson seems stuck on it. In fact, I‘m beginning to think he‘s got a man crush on Leo.

Extremely well researched biography which covers all spheres of his creative life. Main source are Leonardo‘s notebooks from which is evident his necessity for understanding the World - nature and people. Even if you aren‘t interested in art, I highly recommend this book. It‘s a very interesting look into his life and his driving force - knowledge.

tpixie Are there many pictures? Would audio work? 6y
Simona @tpixie Yes, quite a lot. In the book are his most famous paintings, which the author compares to each other to emphasize his development and to draws attention to the things like perspective, shading, use of colors ... and for this reasons, I think, that the traditional book would be better. There are also many drawings and sketches from his notebook, and I probably wouldn‘t know what the author was saying, if I didn‘t saw them. Maybe with...👇 6y
Simona @tpixie ... the google search, but my advice would be - ‘real‘ book.😘 6y

Although Walter Isaac is great at describing the amazing creativity and genius of Leonardo, he shows no balance on the negative side of the genius. I can not judge on the art or engineering but for example Leonardo buys this poor kid he call Salai and Leonardo sleeps with Salai when the child reaches adolescence. this is portrayed in the book as Kind if okay or at least as a non issue. Leonardo was a genius but not a saint.

GingerAntics First, he didn‘t buy him. Leonardo never owned slaves. Leonardo was Salai‘s teacher. Second, 15 was adulthood back then. The concept of teenagers is only from the last 100 years or so. By 15th century standards, and even 19th century standards, Salai was old enough to consent. 6y
Angeles I have to disagree. He might not have bought the kid for life but it was temporary slavery. The boy could not leave his Master until certain amount of time had passed and he didn't decide to go with Leonardo, he was "given" to Leonardo. About consent, there is a difference between what is legal and what is morally right. Also homosexuality was a crime at the time so Leonardo was promoting criminal behavior of a youth 6y
Angeles Sorry about the long answer. I still think Leonardo was an unbelievable genius 6y
