Summer Hours at the Robbers Library
Summer Hours at the Robbers Library: A Novel | Sue Halpern
75 posts | 62 read | 98 to read
From journalist and author Sue Halpern comes a wry, observant look at contemporary life and its refugees. Halperns novel is an unforgettable tale of family...the kind you come from and the kind you create. People are drawn to libraries for all kinds of reasons. Most come for the books themselves, of course; some come to borrow companionship. For head librarian Kit, the public library in Riverton, New Hampshire, offers what she craves most: peace. Here, no one expects Kit to talk about the calamitous events that catapulted her out of what she thought was a settled, suburban life. She can simply submerge herself in her beloved books and try to forget her problems. But that changes when fifteen-year-old, home-schooled Sunny gets arrested for shoplifting a dictionary. The judge throws the book at Sunnyliterallyassigning her to do community service at the library for the summer. Bright, curious, and eager to connect with someone other than her off-the-grid hippie parents, Sunny coaxes Kit out of her self-imposed isolation. Theyre joined by Rusty, a Wall Street high-flyer suddenly crashed to earth. In this little library that has become the heart of this small town, Kit, Sunny, and Rusty are drawn to each other, and to a cast of other offbeat regulars. As they come to terms with how their lives have unraveled, they also discover how they might knit them together again and finally reclaim their stories.

I almost feel bad because this was my choice for my library‘s book club. The story was intriguing, the way it was presented. Bouncing between 3 perspectives and then two timelines was borderline too much to keep track of. Let alone the present story with Sunny and Kit‘s past story. It just fell flat for me. I did like the aspect of working at a library and being a part of that community. Did not click for me at all.

Next month our city hosts a festival called Operation Pumpkin. I'm painting some rocks to leave behind for others to find. It's a pretty big festival that draws people from all over. I'm hoping to bring some smiles to the people who stumble upon these.

It‘s been a rough couple of months Littens. Both my husband and my dog have been gravely ill, requiring surgery, expensive medications and lots of TLC. And school‘s started back, so on top of my two part-time jobs, I‘m back in the classroom full-time. I‘m tired and frazzled and maybe even a tiny bit depressed, so I‘m taking some time out, while the sickies sleep, to have some coffee and read a library book about libraries.

Smrloomis That sounds like so much to deal with. Here‘s hoping you get some good time to care for yourself as well! ❤️❤️❤️ 3y

Rating: 3/5
It took me a long time to finish this book
I can say that the book is deep and engaging at one point and a little bit boring at another. But in general it's a good one especially that it's circulate around books and libraries and bookworms and this kind of books always attracts me.
The ending was good and reasonable for me it's nice to have a happy expected ending - if we can consider it happy - and thats what made me add another star.

A book about three strangers who come together through the local small town library. There are some interesting less developed characters that we meet throughout the read. This was a cute, easy read that was enjoyable. Well written and the characters were interesting but nothing overly special. Lots of love life talk in the first chapter but it dies down (for the most part) for the rest of the book.

A great read! The cover hooked me in, but since it has a library and librarian as elements to the story, I had to read it! It is touching and gives faith to doing good for the sake of others, even if we all have secrets. I enjoyed it.

A character driven novel in which a few oddly matched characters meet at a library. Friendships are made, secrets are shared. I found this book lovely, but understand the mixed reviews. There are so many storylines that some of them are thin; it seems like the author didn‘t want to add the extra pages or leave them out, so they stayed barely there. Some details serve no purpose, others are missing completely. Audio was good, which saved it for me!

“What you need to know about him back then is that if the police put seven college students in a lineup looking for the one who played trombone in the marching band, Calvin Sweeney would be picked, ten times out of ten”. None of the dedications or epigraphs stood out to be in my #24in48 stack but I do really like this opening sentence.

Spent this afternoon absorbed in the novel. The kind of focus that has me barely aware of my surroundings, where my son‘s voice seems faint, miles away. This dying small New Hampshire town, these unique, iconic, often comic, yet familiar characters, this heart of the town library, converge to make a mostly character driven story riveting. A teenage”unschooled”Sunny, a runaway Kit, & a crashed & burnt Rusty, “Salvagers”, reclaim their unraveled lives.

Enjoyed this story based in a library but ultimately about redemption, second chances at full lives, and recovery from hard experiences. Not as “fluffy” as you might expect it to be, but all the better for it.

Liked Sunny, Rusty was okay, but Kit was problematic for me. Seems like more melodrama than necessary and on finding out what her husband did “but she‘s ugly” was an odd reaction. Liked the library, staff, and regular patrons. At least I had pineapple carrot cake so it wasn‘t all bad.

#BooksAboutBooks

Although the writing is somewhat simplistic & 1 of the major reveals is a bit melodramatic, these flaws are easy to forgive thanks to the wonderful ensemble cast of quirky & loyal library patrons of this small town library who end up becoming a makeshift family for an emotionaly fragile librarian who tries to escape her mysterious past by escaping into the books that surround her. A delightful summer read for any book lover. 🤓
