The Shuttle Frances Hodgson Burnett
The Shuttle Frances Hodgson Burnett | Frances Burnett
The Shuttle is a 1907 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, republished in 2007 by Persephone Books.[1] One of Burnett's longer and more complicated books for adults, it deals with themes of intermarriages between wealthy American heiresses and impoverished British nobles. Sir Nigel Anstruthers comes to New York in search of an heiress, as he no longer has enough money to keep up his estate, Stornham Court. He marries the pretty and cosseted Rosalie Vanderpoel, the daughter of an American millionaire. But on their return to England, Nigel and his mother control and isolate Rosalie from her family. Many years later, Rosalie's now-grown up sister Bettina, who has spent a decade wondering why Rosy has lost contact with the family, arrives at Stornham Court to investigate. She discovers Rosalie and her son Ughtred, physically and emotionally fragile, living in the ruined estate. Bettina, who is both beautiful and made of considerably stronger stuff than her sister, begins to restore both Rosalie's health and spirits and the building and grounds of Stornham Court in Nigel's absence. Bettina, as an attractive heiress, attracts the attention of the local gentry and re-integrates her sister into society, while also gaining the respect of the villagers by her insistence that repairs be done by local workers.

Reading in the hairdressers, I‘m much better reading this in the day rather than in bed ? at night and getting angry ? at the horrid Nigel (does anyone know a nice Nigel ? Just wondering ? ?) and poor Rosy ?but hooray ?? here comes Betty - and perfect accompaniment is listening to Beyoncé‘s cowboy ? carter album ? thank you ? fellow #persephoneClub buddies for the encouragement ?happy Easter ?

I maybe the odd one out here #persephoneClub . But I am so cross with this book 📕 I have had to put it down , perhaps reading it in bed isn‘t such a good idea .,.. oh poor Rosy leave him for godsake !!! I shall stick with it as I‘m sure once Betty gets going it‘ll be a rip roaring read - the photo is Blenheim palace , I was there last week with a friend & my pups 🐶 famously rescued by Consuelo Vanderbilts dowry also sadly a loveless marriage

Cupcake12 I love Blenheim Palace. Took my mum there last year. 5d

... he has lost his temper. He was really very fond of his temper, and rather enjoyed referring to it with tolerant regret as being a bad one and beyond his control -- with a manner which suggested that the attribute was the inevitable result of strength of character and masculine spirit. The luxury of giving way to it was a great one.

I think everyone has posted about the melodrama in this book. Certainly the characters couldn't be more extreme in traits with Nigel being a perfect villain + Betty his nemesis with a tension filled ending. I liked the political aspect with the emphasis on US progress while Britain is in decline
@quietjenn @Tamra @CarolynM @sisilia @Caryl @daena @elkeOriginal @Gissy @Aimeesue @Bookbuyingaddict @julieclair @willaful @LeahBergen #persephoneclub ⬇️

andrew61 It is very interesting to consider the societal aspects of the book, particularly in tandem with something like the secret garden where there is heavy moral message in the characterisations and plots even touching on empire. I know little about Frances Hodgson Burnett, so I was intrigued by her writing here and her themes. She is definitely an American who has strong views. I would however happily buy a typewriter from G Shelden 7d
Tamra @andrew61 George Sheldon was such a likable personable character! Despite the fact it‘s totally predictable he‘ll meet with success, it wasn‘t at all a distraction. 7d
Cathythoughts Great review Andrew. I‘d definitely buy a typewriter from G Sheldon too. 😁 7d
LeahBergen Great review! I also enjoyed comparing this to her children‘s novels as I was reading. And I think G Selden would do very well in sales with our group! 😆 7d

Well, it seems that I agree with my fellow #PersephoneClub readers … this one was a melodramatic gem! Nasty Nigel is one of the vilest villains I‘ve come across in recent reading memory.

And I‘m very glad that a favourite author of my childhood has held up so well!

Tamra 👏🏾👏🏾 I got all the gothic vibes. It was a super fun read. 1w
LeahBergen @Tamra Totally! And it was. Especially the “rescued after lame horse/twisted ankle, take shelter in a remote crumbled cottage” part. 😆😆 So good! 👏👏 1w

What a wonderfully juicy bit of gothic fiction this is - it really has it all! Poor wilting Rosy, bravely battling Ughtred (that name😵‍💫), plucky, capable Betty, honourable Mount Dunston, all-American G Seldon & best of all the irredeemably villainous Sir Nigel - I envisioned him twirling his moustaches while he tormented his victims. Thoroughly enjoyable. Also, it‘s interesting that idioms we take for granted needed explanations #PersephoneClub

I really enjoyed this story and I loved all the drama.

“ And the Shuttle in the hand of Fate , through every hour of every day, and through the slow, deep breathing of all the silent nights, weaves to and fro - to and fro - drawing with it the threads of human life and thought which strengthen its web: and trace the figures of its yet vague and uncompleted design. “

A charming book about two sisters in the early 20th century- a time in which wealthy American girls were sometimes wedded to destitute British Aristocrats as a trade of mutual benefits. Not a fair trade in the case of timid Rosalie Vanderpoel, who finds herself wedded to the brutish Sir Nigel. As her sister Betty becomes involved to further investigate the situation, the book becomes compulsively readable. A pleasure to read 💕

Loved it! Very well-written book about the ties between England and America, particularly at the turn of the 20th century, crumbling English manors, and abusive relationships. FHB tends to romanticize the medieval ages (let‘s not forget they‘re also called “the Dark Ages”), blames bad stewardship instead of Industrialization for the crumbling properties, and treats “business” as all 1 thing. Still, I recommend this highly enjoyable read.

This #Persephone is about American heiresses crossing the Atlantic to marry impoverished British aristocrats. They infused the Brits with #AmericanMoney and in turn adopted the titles & “ruled their lands as well”, so to speak. These marriages were happening frequently at the turn of the century, so much so that the ships were said to be crossing back and forth across the Atlantic like the weaving of a shuttle, hence the title. 💸💸💸

elkeOriginal @Ellen I think that ship has sailed now that I have one in hand... 8y
emilyhaldi LOL you are cracking me up with these Persephone posts!! 😂😂I'm about to go straight to their website and start buying! 8y
Lizpixie Oh no. No you didn't!😫 8y
elkeOriginal @Lizpixie I did nothing! It is all the fault of @Reviewsbylola !! (edited) 8y
quirkyreader Once you start collecting they get addicting. 8y
Ellen @elkeo and the problem is, they keep adding more each year... 8y

Ok.
I am slightly terrified at what @Reviewsbylola has exposed me to in my #summersantagoespostal package.
My first Persephone book.
Plus a catalog - 'just in case' she says.
OMG. OMG. OMG.
Heaven help me.
This title sounds fascinating. I feel like this might be a turning point in my life with books...
#Persephonebooks

Sarah83 What is special about these books? 8y
elkeOriginal @Sarah83 If you follow the #PersephoneBooks tag and you can see the series in other posts - they are from the UK, out of print classics, lots of women writers, gorgeous endpapers! 8y
elkeOriginal @Jess_Read_This I found their full catalog on the website - tried to paste a link here but it wasn't alive. FYI😕 8y
Sarah83 I will have a look later on. 😉 I've already found two Agatha Christie for you. 😉 8y
Kalalalatja Oooooooh 😍😍 I have been thinking about treating myself to a subscription, and I can feel that urge growing right now 😄😄 8y
quirkyreader Yea! We got you hooked on #persephonebooks. When you receive the magazine twice a year look out for the bookmark that is enclosed.🐸🐙 8y
Jess_Read_This @elkeo I just spent a lovely chunk of time perusing the catalog. I love the depth of description they give each book! I don't think I can wait for a Christmas Wish List on a few of them either... lol 8y
