Travel Book 2/5. It wasn‘t great but it was fun. I didn‘t have high expectations but it was an enjoyable, easy airplane read.

29/150 Honestly, I've never cared for Mycroft Holmes in any of the Sherlock Holmes stories I've read, he always seemed like such a pompous ass. So this view of a young, reckless, impetuous Mycroft was a refreshing change of pace. Solid mystery. I'd read more of Mycroft's adventures.

Here are my June totals. I was so excited about how good Kareem Abdul-Jabbar‘s Mycroft Holmes was and I‘m so glad I finally read it. I liked all of these books. I did DNF two books this month: Howl‘s Moving Castle and my #doublespin book Bombs Away. I finished 13 books! Pretty good!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m so happy I finally read this one after owning it for about five years. I love Kareem Abdul-Jabbar sooo much so I‘m very happy that this book really captured the wit and charm and fun of a Doyle Sherlock Holmes book. Mycroft was fascinating and I absolutely loved his friend, George. They are both very different from Sherlock and Watson which helped give it its own identity. I highly recommend, especially to #novelwatchingcrew

Like the title suggests, the book focuses on Sherlock Holmes' brother. Mycroft is only 23 and Sherlock's still a bratty teenager who has only one scene or so (the best part of the book, if you ask me). There's murder, racism and slavery, but the plot is convoluted and unbelievable, and the action scenes read like bad action movie scripts. I like the idea of the book much more than its execution. There are sequels, but I don't think I'll bother.

3/5 ⭐ This one took me a little while to really get into, but then I picked up my reading pace and couldn't put it down the closer it got to the end. Will likely carry on with this series.

1. Oh man did I despise this book. It basically stole the names of famous characters and then wrote a completely trash story that bore no resemblance to the originals. Not an homage. Not a pastiche. Just tripe.

I was astonished to learn Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a Sherlock Holmes enthusiast. And an author. (He was on the writing team for the most current season of “Veronica Mars” btw.)

I enjoyed the characters and story. There were clever nods to the original stories which I appreciated. There were a few things I had an issue with but they are spoilers, so I won‘t specify. I was especially pleased to have a lesson on Merikans in this historical fiction.

I really enjoyed this one. It was a bit slow in a couple of spots, but otherwise it was a terrific introduction to the series. I will definitely continue with book two.

I keep telling myself don‘t buy anymore books 😱😱😱 but ThriftBooks makes it so easy!

Winter is a great time of a bit of Sherlock! Fog filled streets and a nip in the air! I‘ve not tried these....tempted though !

It could never be as finely written as a true Victorian novel, but Abdul-Jabar's take on the great detective's brother flawlessly captures the spirit and adventure of Arthur Conan Doyle while bringing enough modern flare and concerns to this antiquated world.

Apparently I am Mycroft Holmes. Well, I am the opposite of well-connected and my circles are far from elite... and I am only marginally interested in politics... I guess the other half fits... somewhat. Silly quiz... but fun. I do like Mycroft in the series. In the books, he barely shows up.

In honor of my hate reading of this book and several others in the past year I am making a book related New year's resolution. I don't generally do that, but I finished too many books that I didn't enjoy last year. This coming year I resolve to put the book down and not finish it if I'm not enjoying it. Even if I'm half way through and I want the finish for my year-end pages read. Life's too short to read bad books.

Interesting take on the Holmes brothers‘ dynamic. I‘m a big fan of the BBC show and I always found Mycroft stiff and without personality. I liked that the story flushed out Mycroft. #2017christyread

I started this book with a #skeptical mindset but I stand corrected after I finished it. Who would have thought that a #formerNBA superstar could write?! I enjoyed this book right from beginning; it was such an #engaging and #unputdownable book!

LOVED this book! I really liked that Abdul-Jabar/Waterhouse used the Holmes framework as a means to shine a light on people off color in a time period where we are sorely underrepresented outside of slave narratives. You also get a cracking good mystery, and the usual Sherlockian mind tricks, but Mycroft is WAY more fun because he isn't as four.

Oh it was just so tremendously bad. It started out passable, but it just deteriorated from there.

I'm headed to the Caribbean on my first ever cruise and my first time out of the country in 13 years. This is what I've got queued up on my audible, several of which I have as E-books as well. It's the best of both worlds. Anyway, I've got a credit burning a hole in my pocket; metaphorically of course. What should I get with it? I don't do much beach reading. What do you all like to read while lounging with a fruity drink?

While admittedly a sucker for all things Sherlockian, I really enjoyed this exploration of the smarter Holmes brother. It's a fascinating look at racism in Britain and her colonies and the illegal slave trade after the slave trade is "abolished." I listened to it on audible and the reader was excellent.

I'm listening to Mycroft Holmes and it kicks ass!

First book finished in 2017! I enjoyed it mostly because of twists at the end I wasn't expecting. I literally listened to the last third in two days time, without ever getting in my car. At the end I put other pressing things off to finish. But it's a slow burn ...

I started this audio yesterday and I quite like it so far. Abdul-Jabbar has an intro at the beginning and essentially says, "don't let your mind wander listener, you'll miss something." Challenge taken!

So Kareem Abdul-Jabbar co-wrote a novel about Sherlock Holmes' brother. I don't even care if this is good or not, I just love the fact that it exists.

A fun read, but one could easily replace Mycroft with Sherlock and Douglas with Watson. Quite an adventure (kudos Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), but not enough murder for my tastes 😉

A great tribute to a Sherlock. This adventure featuring his big brother Mycroft was an entertaining and suspenseful adventure.

I am intrigued.

Quite a bit of fun, but somehow not as satisfying as the original Sherlock Holmes novels. I really wanted that magical feeling back, but may be I am setting the bar too high? Or may be not, given the mini TV series was so amazingly well done.

A fun quick treat for any Sherlock fan. Here Mycroft is much more likable (but not negatively so) than his famous brother but both share the same satisfying deducing smugness. Cyrus is the breakout character and I dare say is a superior partner than Watson 💯! Comic series coming soon! 🎉

Mycroft has always been my favorite character in Sherlock Homles lore so I'm pumped! Also KAJ's other books that I've read were pretty good so I have high hopes for this book 👍

I loved this book! The descriptions of Trinidadian history and beliefs and immigration were so interesting and were folded so well into the Doyle universe. One of my new favorite Holmes stories.

"Now is not the time for empty ritual," Holmes thundered. "Now is precisely the time!" Douglas thundered back. "When we ourselves are empty, it is the ritual that turns us human again."
