⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ First book of the year and #JumpStart2023 complete! I really enjoyed this Korean short story about a hen who has dreams beyond her chicken coop. On the surface it‘s a simple nature story but there are thought provoking themes being addressed such as motherhood, identity and loneliness.

Clwojick Way to go! ❤️ 1y

This is the tale of a hen who dreams of escaping her coop and hatching a baby of her own. Described as a fable this is a charming story. Beautifully descriptive with gorgeous illustrations.

I bought this book after hearing the author speak, so glad I did.

Here is a nice little story from South Korea about Sprout, a hen, with big dreams.
It's lovely written with an enticing and moving storyline. The illustrations are also bringing this book to another level.

In this moving tale, we look at the world through the eyes of a hen who calls herself Sprout. As Sprout ventures outside her coop, a new world opens for her as she struggles to survive, is faced with the reality of her dreams, and bravely withstands ridicule and heartache. The main character may be a hen, but the lessons and emotions are relatable for humans of all ages. An enchanting book, it is no surprise this is an international bestseller.

Picked completely and utterly at random. Anyone read it? Thoughts?

Tamra I haven‘t, but I love the cover! 5y
Emilymdxn Confusing one for me. I gave it a so so at the time, but it‘s really stuck with me, so maybe that‘s the mark of it being a better book than I originally gave it credit for 5y
LeePeckover I loved it! Kind of a children's book, but written with such tenderness and care that it could be enjoyed by anyone. Oddly paced at times, but I haven't stopped thinking of it since finishing it. 5y

I really enjoyed this. I love animals, and really felt for Sprout. Even if they weren‘t animals, there is a lot of mother-child type interactions going on between Sprout and the little one. And interesting (and sad) interactions between Sprout, the little one, and the other farm animals

This was a cute fun read. I loved Sprout and her undying love for Greentop. I think it makes a powerful statement, as well, that blood doesn't make family which is something I connect to deeply.

A short, effective tale of love, motherhood, resilience, and tolerance. I fell in love with the protagonist – a scrawny hen who dreams of freedom and hatching an egg. Also, the last chapter left me teary-eyed which is not what I expected from a book about ducks, hens and weasels. A great read if you're looking for something simple yet powerful.

For the #24in48 Hour 30 Challenge of what under the radar book I would recommend, my choice is The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly. This book wrecked me. It is about motherhood, sacrifice, differences, and love. I'm surprised it affected me so much because I'm not a mother, or very nurturing. You MUST read it now. I plan to read The Dog Who Dared to Dream, but I'm not sure if I am emotionally able to right now. Full review is on Goodreads.

I was home alone one day & watched a movie called #DaisyAHenIntotheWild & I won't lie, I cried for hours!! The movie was adapted from this book, which is a story about dreaming you can be something more, love, growing up, motherhood, bullying, identity, intolerance & ultimately sacrifice. All of these wonderful relatable topics are wrapped up in a beautiful & heartfelt little book. It's a short, quick read that will stay with you for a long time.

My parents are immigrants but I was born in the US. So while I speak Korean fluently, I can read & write very little. I always wonder what I'm losing in the translation. Some translations are better than others. For example, the literal translation of the Korean title is "The hen comes out of the yard". This title is obviously better. ? #womenintranslation #aprilbookshowers @RealLifeReading

Nafiza I adored this one. The ending made me weep. I minored in Korean in undergrad and in the translating course, got a chance to (painfully) read some stories in Korean. There's so much awesome Korean lit that doesn't get translated. Especially short stories. I will always be sad about that. 7y
