The Star Of The Sea
The Star Of The Sea | Joseph O'Connor
In the bitter winter of 1847, The Star of the Sea sets sail from Ireland for New York. Amongst the passengers are a maidservant with a devastating secret, bankrupt Lord Merridith and his family, an aspiring novelist and a maker of revolutionary ballads. All in search of a new home in the Promised land, each is yet connected more deeply than they can possibly know... and a camouflaged killer is stalking the decks, hungry for vengeance and absolution.

#12booksofchristmas @Andrew65 I knew I would love this May choice and it had been sat on my shelf for a while until a booked2022 prompt made me pick it up and what a joy. This maritime adventure is set in the height of the Irish potato famine. A well told multi character story which had me turning the page and absorbing every word.

What a brilliantly told story of the experience of people escaping the potato famine to the promised land. Told by a reporter present on the ship this is a finely woven mystery that tells of a murder, the killer, and conditions in Ireland at the time. The interconnected lives add to the tension + it is dickensian in telling esp with hid cameo. A joy to read .

Cinfhen Sounds great! Thanks for sharing 2y
batsy That sounds really interesting! I haven't heard of this before so thanks for putting it on my radar. 2y

Pius Mulvey was mindful of the terrible task he had to perform the whole journey.

This is my all time favorite book. It is breathtakingly good. It has been made into a wonderful stage play by a theater group in Galway but has not got the #movieortvshow treatment as far as I know. #bibliomaynia I have three copies in my house in case I convince someone to read it. Yep, that good!

TrishB I‘ve read as was gifted a copy by @Cathythoughts it‘s one of her faves too. I really enjoyed it! 4y
Cathythoughts @TrishB Thanks Trish ! Yes I loved it Cuilin❤️ us Corkonians have similar tastes in books 😁 4y

Cathythoughts Trailer link works ! Thankyou ... looks amazing. I didn‘t see it , can‘t wait to get back to the Everyman though X ❤️ 4y

An engrossing read, encompassing everything about human relationships. Pius Mulvey - what a character. So many metaphors between the ship and Ireland at the time.

Cathythoughts I‘m delighted you liked it Trish !! Great review ❤️👍🏻 I loved it & yes Pius Mulvey is quite a character. I heard the author on the radio about his new book ShadowPlay & he says one of the characters from Star of The Sea is in it .... ❤️ 4y
TrishB @Cathythoughts interesting 👍🏻 4y

#QuotsyJan18 #Macabre @TK-421 I read this book back when I wasn‘t really reading. Went into Waterstones & asked for a book that would be a page turner. Well, it really was just that. Pius Mulvey is sometimes a macabre character- I don‘t have the book to quote - but he came to mind for this prompt. Loved this book. But it took another few years before I became a constant reader again. Litsy is making sure I will continue to be one 🙏🙏🙏

tomes4gnomes An excellent read — one of my faves! 6y

Amongst those so poor that they deserve no shame, shame lasts longer than life. Humiliation their only inheritance, and denial the coinage in which it is paid.
