Dreyer's English
Dreyer's English: An Utterly Correct Guide to Clarity and Style | Benjamin Dreyer
A witty, informative guide to writing from Random Houses longtime copy chief and one of Twitters leading language gurusa twenty-first-century Elements of Style. Were all of us writers: We write term papers and office memos, letters to teachers and product reviews, appeals to politicians, journals, and blog entries. Some of us write books. All of us write emails. And we all want to write them better: We want to make our points more clearly, more elegantly; we want our writing to be appreciated, to be more effective; we wantto be quite honestto make fewer mistakes. Benjamin Dreyer is here to help. As authoritative as it is amusing, Dreyers English distills everything Random House copy chief Benjamin Dreyer has learned from the scores of books he has copyedited into a useful guide not just for writers but for everyone who wants to put their best foot forward in writing prose. Dreyer offers lessons on the ins and outs of punctuation and grammar, including how to navigate the words he calls the confusables, such as tricky homophones; the myriad ways to use (and misuse) a comma; and how to recognizethough not necessarily do away withthe passive voice. People are sharing their writing more than ever and this book lays out, clearly and comprehensibly, everything writers can do to keep readers focused on the real reason writers write: to communicate their ideas clearly and effectively. Chockful of advice, insider wisdom, and fun facts on the rules (and nonrules) of the English language, this book will prove invaluable to everyone who wants to shore up their writing skills, mandatory for people who spend their time editing and shaping other peoples prose, andperhaps best of allan utter treat for anyone who simply revels in language.

Can a book about style & clarity in writing be one of your favorite books of the year? I‘m here to tell you it can. And you don‘t have to be a writer to enjoy this one—anyone who enjoys books, peering into the world of editing, or delving into the nuances of the English language will find a lot to like. With lots of humor & obvious but never pompous expertise, Dreyer has written a great book that belongs on the shelf with the big style manuals.

I adored this!! I‘ve read this over mannnnyy many months, here and there in tidbits. An entertaining how-to writing guide from one of Random House‘s copy editors, Benjamin Dreyer. Dry humor for word lovers. I learned some things as I giggled which isn‘t something I‘ve been able to do with many other pieces of nonfiction. The author is also on Twitter 🐦

#3books that made me laugh

Harry Potter- I‘m pretty sure all of the Harry Potter books have made me laugh at some point, so I just picked one at random.

Dreyer‘s English-Helpful and surprisingly funny

Furiously Happy- I wasn‘t really a fan of most of Lawson‘s humor, but I‘d be lying if I said this book didn‘t make me laugh at all.

This was both helpful and funny. I laughed out loud several times while reading, leaving my boyfriend wondering what could possibly be so funny about a reference book. I think that makes it appropriate for #booked2020 #MakesYouLOL 😂 I borrowed this from the library, but I think I might buy a copy to use as a reference.

Never thought a book on grammar could be a FUN read ... yet here I am!

So many interesting and useful tidbits in here. I wish I‘d had this when I was helping a previous boss edit her book (for context, we work in STEM and our writing skills are subpar so it was a struggle). This is a book I‘ll come back to whenever a grammar/syntax/spelling/punctuation question comes up.

Bonus points for being written in a witty and conversational voice 👌🏼

It is the closest thing to porn for word nerds. I really loved reading this style guide, but then again, I am a huge language nerd. It's full of interesting language rules, nonrules, facts, and examples. We're all writers even if we don't do it for a living, and I've never met someone who doesn't want to be a little bit of a better writer. https://onthebl.org/2020/03/31/dreyers-english-by-benjamin-dreyer/

For this week‘s #bookreport I‘ve been doing my best impression of a reader, but really I‘ve been opening books and skimming. I did get through these two 🥳 I had trouble getting into Nothing To See (which I really should have loved), so I resorted to non-fiction and read about grammar to comfort myself with hard and fast rules. It actually helped! Planning to read Rubbernecker next but your best guess is my #weeklyforecast 🙃

Ok not only do I love that Dreyer quotes this excellent passage from the beginning of Charles Dickens‘s Bleak House as an example that fragments can sometimes be used to great effect, but also I love that he‘s going to wait three months for me to read the whole novel. Megabooks @mom2bugnbee lol! You‘re a vet, too, right? Okay, if so, I‘m reading another book, and I think it‘s fake. I‘ll tag it. It‘s supposed to be the real diary of a teenage girl and she does “eight pink ketamine pills”. I didn‘t think K was metabolized in the GI tract. I thought to do it recreationally you had to cut and snort or reconstitute. Need your professional opinion to find a fake! 🕵️🕵️ (edited) 4y
mom2bugnbee @Megabooks From what I could find, ketamine is mostly metabolized in the liver, but I did see that it said that the GI tract is an additional site "for animals". I'm assuming that this means non-humans? And it's lipid-soluble, so it *could* be absorbed by the GI tract, but as you know, that doesn't mean it is. I'm thinking you're right! 4y
Megabooks @mom2bugnbee Thanks for looking into it. From what I found, it seems oral pills are illegally manufactured. I seem to remember something about inconsistent GI absorption, which is why pills aren‘t popular/commercially available, I assume. Plus it seems, from what I could find on “how illegal drugs affect you” websites that the high only lasts 45 minutes. I‘ve never taken drugs recreationally, but that doesn‘t seem worth the money. Bail review here 4y
mom2bugnbee @Megabooks Funny, when you said that she's takes ketamine pills, my first thought was "it comes in pills?" Welp, shoulda checked with a professional! ? 4y

This book can be read for pleasure or it can serve as a desk-reference. The writing is informative and stilted. Dreyer so often breaks the flow of his sentences by means of parentheses, dashes, and footnotes that his writing style moved in my mind from annoying to comic & thence to oddly endearing. I‘m glad to add that Dreyer is quite funny. This book can serve as a thorough guide for editing one‘s own writing. Good stuff.

Nute I downloaded the sample of this on my Kindle and fell in love with his humor in the first paragraph. It is his comedic approach to writing that endears the reader. I didn‘t purchase it at the time, but your review has increased my interest. 4y
