Torch Against the Night
Torch Against the Night | Sabaa Tahir
Elias and Laia are running for their lives. Following the events of the Fourth Trial, an army led by Masks hunts the two fugitives as they escape the city of Serra and journey across the vast lands of the Martial Empire. Laia is determined to break into Kauf the Empire s most secure and dangerous prison and save her brother, whose knowledge of Serric steel is the key to the Scholars' future. And Elias is determined to stay by Laia s side...even if it means giving up his own chance at freedom. But Elias and Laia will have to fight every step of the way if they re going to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene Elias s former friend and the Empire s newest Blood Shrike. Helene s mission is horrifying, unwanted, and clear: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape...and kill them both. Praise for "An Ember in the Ashes: " This novel is a harrowing, haunting reminder of what it means to be human and how hope might be kindled in the midst of oppression and fear. "The Washington Post" "An Ember in the Ashes"could launch Sabaa Tahir into JK Rowling territory It has the addictive quality of"TheHunger Games"combined with the fantasy of"Harry Potter"and the brutality of"Game of Thrones." Public Radio International ""An Ember in the Ashes"glows, burns, and smolders as beautiful and radiant as it is searing." "Huffington Post""" ["An Ember in the Ashes"] thrusts its readers into a world marred by violence and oppression, yet does so with simple prose that can offer moments of loveliness in its clarity. This complexity makes"Ember"a worthy novel andone as brave as its characters. "The New York Times Book Review""

A worthy sequel! Character development is a main theme here as Laia becomes more self-assured, driven by her need to save her brother; Helene figures out how to survive as the second-in-command to an emperor she doesn't trust; and Elias must reckon with all the harm he's caused as a Mask. Will be going on to book 3 after finishing my book club selection!

I really loved characters, this had several secondary characters that were awesome and I liked how we got Helene's POV.

The beginning was a bit slow after the first action-packed chapter but picked up after 50 %. Then we got to see more of those strange creatures and merciless world similar to first book.

This book made me cry several times. This had twists that I didn't see coming.

This series is fantastic. Hours pass while I'm immersed in this world losing all track of time. This author has an amazing ability to put her characters in the worst situations ever and write the most amazing, hateful villains. The portrayal of war and genocide almost takes it out of the YA genre, but so well done. #highlyrecommend #mustread

4½⭐
This second book was brutal and deadly but fulfilling. One thing that‘s certain about these books is that they are definitely not boring; there is a lot to unpack. At the end of book one, things felt uncertain, at least, as far as what direction things were going. I feel like elements are progressing towards something. Also, what felt like a love square is becoming something less confusing for both us and the characters, I least I think it is?

Amazing secuel of An Ember in the Ashes! Filled with action, misteries and with surprising plot twists. But there is also a lot of violence for my taste, and until the last 100 pages de of the book I was a bit lost with everything that was going on. Still amazing book!

5/5 for the second in this fantasy series! This one was a wild ride! I loved every minute of it. There were so many twists and turns. Laia and Elias are wonderful characters. I‘m so worried about Helene. I will be continuing this series!

This book was all and more than I could have ever wanted from a book two of a series! Nothing about it was ever boring. Every character has the growth they needed. I was utterly destroyed towards the end of the book but was saved with the ending. Absolutely fantastic.

Once again I really enjoyed the narration of the second book. Laia is single minded in her drive to save her brother, as her and Elias are being pursued, even at times to the detriment of others

The magic in the world starts to present itself a bit more in this book, which we saw glimpses of in book 1, but the story is definitely driven a lot by the characters development.

This was my second read through of book 2, which is a solid 4 star read.

Progress:
📖 I finished 2 books & started the tagged reread today, so I'm pretty on track.
🥗 With a family health issue, I basically ate what I could, when & where I could. I expect that to continue as life returns to normal. Instead, I will change my goal to an outdoor walk 5x per week. This will at least instill an easier health habit, and maybe get me out of the house & away from the stress for 20-30 minutes a day.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
A fantastic follow up to the first book, Tahir adds a third narrator to this one & really expands the reach of the story.
I‘ve read reviews that people think this is a tired or overdone storyline, but I don‘t think that‘s the case. There are, of course, elements we recognize from the genre, but this series so far has done things I wasn‘t expecting & delved deeper than anticipated. I am excited to continue into book 3!

Clearly I did not post this one either - sorry, taking a look at my goodreads now. ************** There were parts of this was that was a bit long and not quite as enjoyable as the first. I‘m still a bit confused as to why Elias was chosen for his job. I am rather intrigued by the Nightbringer.

I love when a sequel makes you see a character in a new light. The change of perspective the continuation can give you and the rage you can feel at fictional characters.

I BLEW through this series, y‘all. Of course second installments are never as good as the first, but this kept pace. I LOVE me some Elias— I didn‘t love how his story arc ended in this book. I‘m hoping he has better luck in the next book. Liai just keeps getting stronger and deeper. Oh, and of course there‘s a love triangle! 🔺😂 8/10

The second book didn't disappoint! This is usually where I lose interest in a series, where the magic seems to fade, but I thought Tahir raised the stakes, and adding the pov of Helene made it even more devourable. Again, the audiobook is fantastically narrated!
