Surfacing | Margaret Atwood
Part detective novel, part psychological thriller, Surfacing is the story of a young woman who returns to northern Quebec, to the remote island of her childhood, with her lover and two friends, to investigate the mysterious disappearance of her father. Flooded with memories, she begins to realize that going home means entering not only another place, but another time. As the wild island exerts its elemental hold and she is submerged in the language of the wilderness, she discovers that what she is really searching for is her own past. Permeated with an aura of suspense, complex with layered meanings, and written in brilliant, diamond-sharp prose, Surfacing has grown in reputation as a novel unique in modern literature for its mythic exploration of one womans spiritual pilgrimage.

“I have to be more careful about my memories. I have to be sure they're my own and not the memories of other people telling me what I felt, how I acted, what I said: if the events are wrong the feelings I remember about them will be wrong too, I'll start inventing them and there will be no way of correcting it, the ones who could help are gone. I run quickly over my version of it, my life, checking it like an alibi; it fits...“

I wouldn't say this is a favourite of mine. I think mostly because I didn't particularly engage with the characters.
However, the nature writing/scene setting is beautiful. The rural coming-of -age back story is moving and captures the post-war era perfectly.

Finished earlier today! Margaret Atwood is my fave author, and this one did not disappoint! It was so psychologically complex and tense. It was well-written; each line was so eloquent. The book was thought-provoking and will remain with me. I can do much psychoanalysis of it. Such an accurate, intense portrayal of mental illness and overall psychological deterioration. Looking forward to the next Atwood book I get from the library!

LapReader She is my favourite author too. 1y

3/22 I used #booked2022 as the push I needed to finally read an Atwood but I‘m sad to say this book won‘t push me to pick up another. Although some of the writing is truly masterful, so much so that towards the beginning I almost forgot it wasn‘t a memoir a couple of times, I didn‘t enjoy it and I didn‘t enjoy spending time with the characters. I could see where I was meant to go but I didn‘t enjoy the journey #ecofeministnovel

Cinfhen Too bad that this book wasn‘t a winner. I‘ve read a few Atwood‘s that were truly excellent if you ever change your mind. 2y
Magpiegem @Cinfhen it‘s interesting, this is definitely a book that will stay with me for a while. I keep finding myself thinking about it. There was a lot going for it and if hasn‘t put me off reading another Atwood, it just wasn‘t one of those books that immediately made me want to pick up everything the author has written. I felt as if maybe if I had read this closer to when it was written I would have gotten more from it? I don‘t usually feel that. 2y
Cinfhen I get that. I thought these two were both excellent 2y

Audiocooking the Sunday roast today. I‘m about half of the way through this book now. Parts of it remind me of A-level Kantian ethics, parts of it have me a little intrigued, but at the moment a lot of it is leaving me cold. I think I expected something different . #Booked2022 #ecofemenistnovel

I started rearranging my books today, slowly, first by: fiction, author‘s last name starts with A. Here‘s Abbey through Atwood done! My problem is the constraints of home bookshelves, and the mix of hard backs and paperbacks. How do you shelve your books? Separate paperbacks from hardbacks and then alphabetize? I only want to do this once. 😂
I‘d love to hear how you do it, and see a pic of your shelves! Use #littenlibraries & tag me.

Lcsmcat Fear not Janeites- my Austen‘s are all on my “beautiful bindings” shelf and I don‘t intend to mix those with my more pedestrian covers. 😊 6y
Amiable I have a sorting system that exists only inside my head. I have books in groups that make sense to me: a shelf of childhood favorites, a shelf with books signed by the authors, nonfiction sorted by categories (medical, history, biographies, etc.), fiction that I've read, fiction to be read, etc. and so on. My husband just stands in front of the bookcase and looks helpless until I take the book from his hand and put it in the right spot. 😄 (edited) 6y
TheSpineView I have three separate areas for book. Non fiction together, signed books, then fiction and all are Alphabetically by author regardless of paperback or hard cover. It works for my since of organization. Choose the way that works for you. 6y
See All 6 Comments
Lcsmcat @Amiable That‘s how mine was. Things would be shelved according to when I bought them, or when I planned to read them. But I‘m getting too old for that and I couldn‘t find things I KNEW I owned. 6y
AshleyHoss820 I have mine separated into categories first. My 1,001 Books are alphabetical by title. Then my non-fiction are alphabetical by author. My books that are part of a series are alphabetical by series title. Then I have all my paperbacks together, followed by my trades, followed by my hardbacks. All alphabetical by author. 😊 6y
Daisey I completely get this dilemma! I have a handful of different shelves I‘ve collected over time and some are really short which limits the books I can put on them. I want mostly fiction by author and nonfiction by subject, but it never works out that easily. So, at the moment, mostly chaos! 6y

A woman and her friends go to look for the woman's missing father at his lake cabin in Canada. You get the feeling pretty quickly, that there are some deeper issues, but, unfortunately, I just weren't interested. The MC is just too distanced, and too #comfortablynumb regarding sexism. The writing felt pretentious and too "literary", although there were some beautiful sentences at times. All in all, it added up to a disappointment.

#Rocktober

merelybookish I had to read this for a class a long time ago. It's made me dislike dream sequences in novels. ☺️ Atwood's early novels tend to be more poetic, less plotty. Her books from the late 80s and 90s are meatier and more expansive. Give Alias Grace a try. 6y

This is my pick for #unreliablenarrators for #maybookflowers. The unnamed narrator is also the chief protagonist. We hear and see things from her point of view, including current events and memories of the past. It's a little confusing and totally unreliable. Can I just say that I am SO glad I read most of Atwoods newer works first, as if this was my first foray into her writing...well I probably wouldn't have stuck it out beyond this. It's by no means a terrible read, but when you compare it to The handmaids tale or The blind assassin, it doesn't fare particularly well! I believe this was written in the '70s, and she just improved on so many levels!

I first read Surfacing in '94 part of a Post-War CanLit class. Trying to fill my 'Reread' square in #bookbingonw2016, I wanted to see if I love old Margaret Atwood as much as I love her current work.

One could say the novel is cryptic, but perhaps it's full of symbols waiting to be decoded. Narrative transitions into a dream world populated by the character's personal mythology. To further complicate things, Atwood eschews conventional grammar.
