Some women of late 19th century Paris lived their lives in an aura of glamour and opulence, though they retained their pasts (and loss-filled sadness) beneath the surface...
Above: 3 paintings by Giovanni Boldini; upper left is Marthe de Florian in her exquisite pearl necklace. This painting and an apartment sealed since WWII were the inspiration for the tagged HF novel.

“Perspective is a tool used far too infrequently. If people had the courage to alternate their lens every now and then, the world would be a far more beautiful place.”
I was so happy to #discover this author! This is one of my favorite books of all times!! ❤️❤️❤️

I love Richman's work. She takes a real event, researches it, and then builds a beautiful story around it. This highlights a real apartment found in Paris in 2010 that had not been opened for 70 years. The people are real, there is just little known about them and Richman wove together a lovely novel giving a possibility.

Creating my very own library sounded like such a fun project... until I realized how many books I need to unpack 😅 #bookhaul #library #homelibrary #happyplace
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes historical fiction with a touch of romance. Loosely based on a true story and set in Paris it's a perfect escape from every day life.
My boss says it‘s time for a nap 😴 What can I do?! She‘s the boss!!! @AmyG I‘m reading your lovely letter!! Congratulations to Allison 🎊🎉🎊🎉 Do you have The Velvet Hours?? 🤔

Day 5 #7days7books that left an indelible impression
The setting is Paris late 19th century to mid 20th century: the story of Marthe de Florian. She shines in this portrait by Giovanni Boldini; the detail is exquisite. I love the hands.

@Laughterhp The Velvet Hours is on its way to you tomorrow morning. Enjoy!
Read for #LMPBC Round 5 - #GroupJ
@suvata @Laughterhp @wife @litenthusiast
I‘m purposely being vague about this book because I want the other members of this group to be surprised when they read it. I would give this WWII novel 3.5 stars. I really like how it was told from two perspectives: a grandmother and her granddaughter.
Yay! Look what came in the mail today.

Just finished this book for #LMPBC. I don't want to go into my thoughts too much because I want the rest of my group to have a chance to read it. However, I did enjoy this historical fiction novel and am fascinated by the story that inspired it. #GroupJ @Wife @Laughterhp
@suvata I'm putting this in the mail to you tomorrow!
As we continue to pray for Paris and the devastating loss of Norte Dame I came across this list of books set in Paris on Alyson Richman‘s Facebook page ❤️❤️ One of my favorite books...

I'd want to be in late 19th century Paris, ala Alyson Richman's The Velvet Hours! Life was art, music, literature and architecture that still survives today.
Thank you for this lovely opportunity ❣️
This portrait of Marthe de Florian was made in 1898 by Giovanni Boldini in Paris. The Velvet Hours is historical fiction based on Florian's life in La Belle Époque (pre WWI). Narrative alternates between then and WWII, when Marthe's granddaughter begins to visit her.
