I loved this! The MC is in a coma and the reason why unravels in a non-linear way throughout the book (which sometimes irritates but was done so well). Her explorations of love and connection always touch me deeply. One fact that seems highly improbable to me was the only thing I didn't like. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A spot of op shopping after work one Friday arvo earlier in the month. It‘s usually my only afternoon in the week to do as I please then I go home and watch Gardening Australia with a glass of wine. Sometimes I fall asleep on the lounge cause I‘m buggered!

Maggie‘s writing is compulsively readable. You need to be in the mood for personal/family drama though! It can be a tad overwrought.

Tamra She did a great job describing what it must be like to experience the death of a spouse. 14mo

#AfterYoudGone #MaggieOFarrell #AugustRushAThon #BookSpinBingo #SeriesLove2023

Alice Raikes takes a train from London to Scotland to visit her family, but when she gets there she witnesses something so shocking that she insists on returning to London immediately. A few hours later, Alice is lying in a coma after an accident that may or may not have been a suicide attempt.

EadieB The more they talk, the more they seem to conceal. Alice, meanwhile, slides between varying levels of consciousness, recalling her past and a love affair that recently ended. A riveting story that skips through time and interweaves multiple points of view, After You'd Gone is a novel of stunning psychological depth and marks the debut of a major literary talent. (edited) 1y
EadieB Maggie O'Farrell tells a good story about love, family, grief and loss. Alice gets hit by a car and is in a coma throughout the rest of the book. She reflects on her life remembering old boyfriends, fun times with her sisters and some difficult times with her mother. I'm now looking forward to reading another Maggie O'Farrell book. If you love a good story then you will love this book. 1y

My second Maggie O‘Farrell for #AuthorAMonth
The shifting timeline and different points of view were not easy for me to follow in this one either. I got all the way to end and had to go all the way back to the start to figure out what happened. 😂😂 I do like O‘Farrell‘s writing though.

Maggie O‘Farrell is a favorite author of mine and I‘ve had this debut novel of hers on my shelves waiting to be read forever! While this isn‘t at the top of her books for me (The Hand That First Held Mine and The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox are my faves) it still was a very good character study with the beautiful writing I‘ve come to love. Not sure why the thing Alice saw pushed her to possibly try to kill herself and thought the formatting ⬇️

candc320 Cont‘d: was confusing (why the back and forth not only with Alice‘s life but that of her mother and grandmother) but still satisfying. 🌟🌟🌟🌟💫 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures She is one of my favorites too! I read this one last year and agree it wasn't as satisfying as Esme which is one of her best. Have you read her autobiography? 2y
candc320 No, I didn‘t know she had an autobiography, @ChaoticMissAdventures !!! I‘ll need to look for it! I don‘t typically read nonfiction but I‘m trying to read more and if she wrote it I‘m sure it‘s exceptional! 2y

What a cover 😂
This book started a bit rough for me, a very late 1900s attitude about men - we will stay with the crappy guys because society wants us coupled up - but by the end I was sobbing 😂 O'Farrell knows how to weave a story and this one no exception. I think it would be good for a book club discussion. There are generations of this family doing things that need to be analyzed!

How I love O‘Farrell. This one‘s another favorite. Alice saw something in Edinburgh, leaves the city immediately afterwards, steps into the traffic in London and is taken to the hospital in a coma.
Was it a suicide attempt? The book is about love and betrayal, family and friends, happiness and despair. It‘s a wonderful sad read. I‘ll carry Alice‘s story with me for a while.

Thank you for sending me this book @CarolynM 😘

All the elements that have made O‘Farrell a powerhouse writer were there in her impressive 2000 debut. This was a fantastic used book find!

Told in non-linear segments, the story of Alice‘s attempted suicide is heartbreaking and lyrical. O‘Farrell slowly reveals more about Alice, her impulsivity and passion, the family that cares about her, and the deeply painful event behind it. Grab your tissues!

This is Maggie O‘Farrell‘s debut and it is great. Not as polished as her more recent work but very well done. Alice is in a coma after being hit by a car and the story jumps around all over the place in time and POV piecing together the events of her life. It was confusing a couple times but the pacing was spot on. This was ambitious and she totally pulled it off. 4⭐️

?? Ich muss besser aufpassen, was ich sage.

Und mich erst mal beruhigen.

Pickpick

This is my first but certainly not last Maggie O'Farrell. I love it when an author unfolds the story in such a teasing way using flashbacks and multiple character narratives. This had me in tears a few times as familial and marital relationships were explored. I'm beginning to think this is my 'thing' as I love reading about complex relationships however deep or fleeting. Loved it.

Really enjoying this audio. I started the paperback last year but became distracted so thought I'd finish listening to it. This is my first O'Farrell and it's wonderful. Her writing is engaging and lyrical without being simplistic. Not long until it's over though, sadly.

Lindy The good news is that there are plenty more by O'Farrell. 😀 8y

"She has spent most of the day reading and is feeling rather out of touch with reality, as if her own life has become insubstantial in the face of the fiction she's been absorbed in."
