Who doesn‘t love a story about a murderous robot with a conscious?
Murderbot is a SecUnit sent on intergalactic space missions with the humans who hire the spacecrafts. But unlike the other units, which must obey every command, Murderbot can think for itself. It just chooses to help so it will remain undetected.
In this shortish novel, the first in the series, we‘re introduced to Murderbot and it‘s thinking.
Great story, entertaining scifi.
This is a re-read for me. I wanted to revisit the series from the beginning. And so very glad I did! It is still a breath of fresh air and light and lively.

@CBee
1. I read almost all of the Murderbot books in August, but I've tagged the first because it ignited the spark for me!
2. All of them! Paper because of the tactile experience, ebooks because I can read in the dark and pack "light" while still taking a shelfload of books, audiobooks because I can read while doing housework.
3. Probably mystery/thriller/horror these days.
#WondrousWednesday
Fun questions, @Eggs !
My elder child has been recommending this series to me for ages, and I finally picked it up, and I really liked it! Murderbot is so honest and self-reflective, which sounds weird but makes total sense on the character. Now to procure the second in the series!
Well I finally know what everyone else is raving about. What a goddamn delight.
This is one of the best sci fis I've read in awhile. Absolutely love the direction so far

…except on a Wednesday since I‘m a day late! 😬
1. My husband is a tech guy and people will tell you we‘ve been married long enough, he‘s become my technology brain. So no, I myself am NOT good with technology but together, WE are excellent! 😂
2. Tagged. The Murderbot series is one of my favorites—I love the stories and the characters but also the technology and the exploration of what makes us human.
@TheSpineView
A friend recommended the tagged series to me and it will kick off my Bookspin reading list for June! I‘m really excited about all the books on the list… which means that I will probably want to change it in about half an hour. 😋 Right @BennettBookworm ?
Bookmark is part of a bookish pack. This one says Books are Yoga for the Mind.
#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 Okay! Now I know what all the fuss is about. This was a very entertaining story. Most of this series is currently free on Audible (Yay for excellent free stuff.) This security droid calling itself Murderbot has attained free will. But rather than murdering anyone, it would much rather watch soap operas. I‘ll continue this series and I highly recommend that all science fiction fans start reading or listening.
Airport reading. We're traveling to London and then Edinburgh over the next couple of weeks, and we pack light so it's time for a reread of the Murderbot Diaries since I have them in ebook format. And they're great fun!
My up-nexts. Also, it‘s apparently my Litsyversary today! 🎉

💥 Patrick deWitt, Stephen King, Ed Brubaker, V.E. Schwab, Kate Moore, Jeff Lemire
💖 Ugh, umm... gotta go with The Giver, whatever genre you want to fit that into :)
📚 Seanan McGuire (Wayward Children), Martha Wells (Murderbot), Stephen King (Dark Tower, Bill Hodges)
Hey fans of the audiobooks for the Murderbot series!
Do you need more Kevin R Free being a sarcastic mechanical being questioning their own personhood while also taking care of an overly curious human? Of course you do.
I just discovered this podcast today with an AI named Mikey and an astronaut named Len and I‘m hooked after one episode. It‘s called Ask Your Father by Gideon Media. #BookCast
When a security android slash synthetic slave goes rogue, it becomes a wild card in a sci-fi adventure. However, the best part of the book is the part of this android being very humane, shy, sarcastic and sacrifices himself to safe the humans who for the first time treat it decently.
Will go straight to the second book in the series

The Murderbot series reread begins! Having bounced around in this series universe for a while, this first book definitely feels like just a taste of larger discussions about autonomy, enslavement, the nature of a self, corporate greed(lack of ethics), but it's honestly the perfect length introduction to Murderbot's POV. 1/?
The plot was intriguing but aside from Murderbot, everyone else had a paper-thin personality.
I've been waiting to post until I finished the series but I'm waiting for the final book from libby because I don't want to use an audible credit on a book I'll finish in a week lol. But these are so good if you like some light hearted and witty sci-fi. Definitely recommend.
I finally see what all the fuss is about and I‘m jazzed to read the rest of this saga!
A friend just told me about Audible Plus so I‘m binge listening to all The Murderbot Diary novellas available. I forgot how snarky and funny Murderbot is 🤖❤️🐉. A couple weekends ago The Stanley Cup was on display in the Inner Harbour so had to get a picture 🥅 🏒
I am not usually a Sci-Fi reader, but picked up this novella after seeing it recommended and I was really impressed. It was both smart and funny, plus a little bit sassy. Of course it also had some action and the inclusion of morality issues gave it some depth. Being Sci-Fi, it had a lot of technical stuff, but it never felt overwhelming or hard to follow. I have added the second in the series (Artificial Condition) to my TBR list. 4.5/5 stars.
Spent part of my day reading the first Murderbot Diary book. I‘ve seen lots of love for these books but had no idea what they were other than SciFi. I liked it and look forward to reading more in the series. This was on Sharon‘s TBR and I wonder if she would have liked it. #Sharreadathon #LitsyLove #SeriesLove24
Now that I‘m back at work, I‘m also back to commuting and listening to audiobooks. This is my current aural re-read. Loving remembering the origins of Murderbot.
I'm very behind on posting my reads so far this year. I'm already almost done with book 3 of the Murderbot Diaries. I listened to the first one several years ago before I had the means for something like audible. I'm very happy to be reading the rest. My new 40min commute is allowing to plow through media and im here for it
Anyone interested in an a Murderbot #buddyread? We‘d do a book a month.
Just listened to this novella while playing some Mortal Kombat. I liked this, Murderbot is definitely A Mood. It poses the question ever present in the genre since I, Robot; when does artificial intelligence become intelligent life? But Murderbot might not be ready for peopling. It‘s really taking time away from their entertainment streaming time.
An actual description of my staycation this week:
“Mensah set up a watch schedule, including in time for me to go into standby and do a diagnostic recharge cycle. I was also planning to use the time to watch some Sanctuary Moon and recharge my ability to copy with humans at close quarters without losing my mind.”
Same, Murderbot. Same. 👯♀️
#AuldLangSpine @BarbaraJean
A little found family story, with a grumpy anti-social introvert with a heart of gold, a hacked comm unit, and inorganic weapons built-in to its body in the center.
I think I liked this enough to continue, at least on to Book 2. It was sweet, and endearing, with a healthy dose of side-eyed humor. But I wasn‘t *immediately* captivated or enthralled the way I expected to be. It felt, very much, like a piece — not a whole. 🦾👇🏻
I‘ve officially started my first #AuldLangSpine book! Moxie is monitoring my reading. 🐇
@BarbaraJean
Murderbot,a “messed-up second-hand SecUnit”-half bot half human- accompanies a team of scientists on a mission to collect data. But something or someone is after them and they don‘t know who&why.Murderbot loves watching TV shows where he learns about human behaviour&feelings. He prefers TV humans&is both annoyed&intrigued by real humans. This is a fun book but AppleTV is turning the books into a show&I‘d rather watch than read this. very original👍
Fun, quick book about a murderbot who‘s not much of a murderer. He‘d rather be avoiding his work and watching Netflix. But the humans on his current mission have found him helpful and now he has to interact with them, which he finds super awkward. This is book one in a series, and even though I‘m not a big fan of sci-fi or a multiple-book series, I will definitely keep going.
I really lost my heart to this adorable Murder Bot! Hilarious character and so unique.
Story itself was interesting and went fast forward, some of the last scenes maybe a bit too fast. But that ending. Loved it!

How are fans of the books feeling about this??
I am excited to see it come on screen, and am so glad it is going to be a series and not a movie. I am also excited Apple is carrying it, they are doing some amazing work.
I am just not so sure about Alexander Skarsgård being the lead?
If you are a fan how did you picture Murderbot?
MURDERBOT IS COMING TO TV!!!!!!!!
I would be screaming out loud if it weren‘t for the fact the rest of the family is asleep…so, instead I‘ll have to stick with giddy excitement expressed through gleeful smiling.
How am I supposed to sleep after reading this article in The Verge?!?
Cannot. Wait. Can. Not.
Murderbot is a favorite and I‘m beyond excited to see these stories on the small screen. Yay!!!
I love this book series, so I am… unsure how I feel about this right now. Keeping my fingers crossed though. 🤞🏻

Murderbot hacks its own governor module which means it doesn't have to obey orders anymore and protect the people it is supposed to protect as a SecUnit. But it doesn't care much for murder especially after finding out it can now access the combined feed of entertainment channels carried on the company satellites. "As a heartless killing machine, I was a terrible failure."
I enjoyed this short one immensely.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My copy of the first in the Murderbot series has arrived! @Soubhiville @Adventures-of-a-French-Reader and all my Litsy friends who‘ve been praising this book and getting a no science fiction reader to get so excited about reading sci-fi
As a reader who is not drawn to science-fiction, I feel this novella is a great introduction to the genre. I already checked out the other three novellas of the Murderbot Diaries ;)
The plot was interesting, it reads like an episode of a series. And most importantly, when finished, we want to read what comes next...
This has been on my list forever and I‘m so happy to have ticked it off this #scarathlon - short, original, funny and interesting. My only complaint was that it could have been longer really to get more depth in.
#skeletoncrew
This GraphicAudio was good, but the audiobook was better, IMHO.

This was really tough because I read a few awesome books this month including Magic Claims, Star Splitter, and The Kaiju Preservation Society. But I picked the tagged because it is a masterclass in writing in 149 pages. Martha Wells is simply brilliant.
Thanks for the tag @The_Penniless_Author 😀
In only 149, pages, there is a lot packed into this SciFi novella. Incredible character development of a part organic, part inorganic android, and through first POV no less, asking the underlying human question of "who am I." The set-up, the tension, the conflict—this novella is a masterclass in writing. Simply brilliant.
Book 3 for #20in4
