Persepolis I & II
Persepolis I & II | Marjane Satrapi
CHOSEN BY EMMA WATSON FOR 'OUR SHARED SHELF' FEMINIST BOOK CLUB The Story of a Childhood and The Story of a Return The intelligent and outspoken child of radical Marxists, and the great-grandaughter of Iran's last emperor, Satrapi bears witness to a childhood uniquely entwined with the history of her country. Persepolis paints an unforgettable portrait of daily life in Iran and of the bewildering contradictions between home life and public life. This is a beautiful and intimate story full of tragedy and humour - raw, honest and incredibly illuminating.

Quick train-book or rather a graphic novel about Marjane Satrapi's childhood before and after the Iranian revolution.

I loved the art, and really enjoyed the story of
Marjane growing up, and learned a lot about Iranian society in the process. I grew fond of her parents, and related to Marjane‘s forthright character. And I liked having 2 books to work through.

I finished these two yesterday, and really liked them! Satrapi‘s use of simple drawings in telling a complex story was super interesting, and I enjoyed learning about Iran‘s history and culture through the eyes of a child 👌

CaroPi I love these two! There is also a movie about it. They have a special place in my heart because it was the first graphic novel that I read 12mo

Sooooo good!! Definitely a 5⭐️ read! Iran-Iraq war dominated my childhood; it just never ended!!. They didn‘t teach this in school but the newspapers had everything. I remember when the news about Khoumeini passing was broadcasted on TV. It sounded serious I felt goosebumps all over my body.

It must be tough to grow up in such environment. Marjane‘s amazing! I really admire her courage; it‘s not easy to be an outspoken woman in that society.

Cinfhen This was very good 1y

Individual histories are equally important to general history. A beautiful coming-of-age story in a rapidly changing, topsy turvy country.

A very enjoyable memoir & graphic novel(s). Even though she writes about war, torture, death & repression it's not a depressing book. It's actually a positive & uplifting book. Glad I finally got around to reading it - better late than never.

Finally getting to the Reading Women podcast. Very much enjoyed my first episode and their discussion of Persepolis and Salvage The Bones, both of which I felt exactly the same way about.

So happy to finally be reading these! I've been wanting to read them since I first heard about them years ago. Now I'm reading them for Emma Watson's My Shared Shelf group on Goodreads. I was able to walk in and get both volumes at the library with no trouble - score!
