World Travel: An Irreverent Guide | Anthony Bourdain, Laurie Woolever
20 posts | 9 read | 14 to read
A guide to some of the worlds most fascinating places, as seen and experienced by writer, television host, and relentlessly curious traveler Anthony Bourdain Anthony Bourdain saw more of the world than nearly anyone. His travels took him from the hidden pockets of his hometown of New York to a tribal longhouse in Borneo, from cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, Paris, and Shanghai to Tanzanias utter beauty and the stunning desert solitude of Omans Empty Quarterand many places beyond. In World Travel, a life of experience is collected into an entertaining, practical, fun and frank travel guide that gives readers an introduction to some of his favorite placesin his own words. Featuring essential advice on how to get there, what to eat, where to stay and, in some cases, what to avoid, World Travel provides essential context that will help readers further appreciate the reasons why Bourdain found a place enchanting and memorable. Supplementing Bourdains words are a handful of essays by friends, colleagues, and family that tell even deeper stories about a place, including sardonic accounts of traveling with Bourdain by his brother, Chris; a guide to Chicagos best cheap eats by legendary music producer Steve Albini, and more. Additionally, each chapter includes sly, witty illustrations by cartoonist Tony Millionaire. For veteran travelers, armchair enthusiasts, and those in between, World Travel offers a chance to experience the world like Anthony Bourdain.

When this came out in 2021, I bailed on the audio. I didn‘t enjoy Bourdain‘s words not in his voice. But picking it up now in print, I find it a bit charming.

After his death, Bourdain‘s assistant finished a book he conceived in 2017. Instead of original essays about the cities and venues he loved, she pulled quotes from his TV shows so you still feel his voice in print.

#TitlesAndTunes #TheWorldIsMyOyster

I was a bit stuck for inspiration with this prompt, so I apologise for the cheesy song choice. The book seemed highly appropriate since I remember Anthony Bourdain saying it was an oyster that he ate as a child on holiday in France that sparked his passion for food. It should be an interesting read.

TrishB Won‘t get that song out of my head now!! 1y

The substitute teaching season has officially kicked off so my reading time is suffering. I‘m so tired at the end of the day I only manage a few pages but I have been listening to this on my way to and from school and running errands after work. I had a manicure yesterday after school so I celebrated surviving Tuesday as one does

After watching the Queen‘s funeral on tv, I took a drive to the chicken farm for eggs and listened to Tony and the gang entice me with food and travel. The chickens all came running when I drove up, I must remember to bring them kitchen scraps 🤦🏻‍♀️

Sigh... I wanted an Anthony Bourdain fix and this book was just not great. Mainly written after his death.

Mixed feelings- if you‘re looking for a travelogue of exotic locations and adventurous bites this book is great. But, if you want a comprehensive travel guide this is NOT that book. A compilation of sound bites taken from the many travels of Anthony Bourdain this is not a book he was writing prior to his death. The audio was ok but I have a feeling this might work better in print. A #BorrowNotBuy but satisfies the hunger for #TravelLust #LowPick

Velvetfur Sounds interesting....and I love those pretty flowers in the pic 😍 3y

Reading this and Binge at the same time, not sure if I‘m digging this one or if it‘s what I expected. I actually don‘t care that much about food??? I‘m more into the stories around food if that makes sense.

I understand this isn't meant to be an in depth examination and there was a lot of countries to cover, but I didn't like I got much more out of this than if I had picked up a generic tour guidebook. The only thing that keeps me from panning this is the wonderful, mouth watering food discriptions. 3 🍻🍻🍻

As a travel guide, this is good. A lot of practical information presented in a clear & helpful manner, but it lacks the Bourdain flare. Primarily written by based on clips from his various shows & essays by those who worked/traveled with Tony, there are bits of him in the book, but it was a let down compared to his prior books. It fails to capture the true exuberance, quirkiness,& irreverence of Tony...those things that made him...well, him.

Bourdain was one of the unique voices who I still miss. This is in theory his last book, but in reality it is a book he had an idea for, with his experiences and previous in show commentary as the core of this idea. Unfortunately at the time of his death he had not started this task which was then picked up by another author using his tv programmes for quotes and travel preferences. So not so much a book by Bourdain as guide based on his tv shows

About a third into this, and I‘m disappointed so far. As I have no plans for international travel, even after Covid, the generic airport and taxi info is not helpful. The Bourdain sound alike that is recycling quotes from No Reservations and Parts Unknown isn‘t doing the #audiobook any favors. Right now, it would be generous to give it a so-so. Perhaps I‘ll bail. 🤔

Cinfhen Disappointing 😔I was looking forward to reading this one. 4y
GinaKButler What a bummer! I was looking forward to this! 😕 4y
Prairiegirl_reading I‘m ordering it on paper. I think the audiobook would make me sad since I would miss his voice. I still want to read this one. 4y

Librariana I'm with @Prairiegirl_reading on this one - without his voice, it would just be sad 😔 I should warn my husband since he's a fan, an audiobook listener, and I reminded him about this upcoming book. 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen @GinaKButler I always hope other people enjoy books more than I do, if they aren‘t a pick for me. This would‘ve been a great book if Bourdain was around to touch it up, but I‘m just not feeling it. @Prairiegirl_reading it will definitely be a better reference if you plan on traveling and eating at Tony‘s favorite places, as it says which are still open (pre-Covid) and how they‘ve changed. 4y
Megabooks @Librariana maybe you‘ll enjoy it more than I did. I‘ve read most of his nonfiction - even The Nasty Bits and his underrated book on Typhoid Mary - but I‘m just not feeling this. 4y
Cinfhen I trust your opinion/ I‘ll go the #BorrowNotBuy route. The ebook is available on #Hoopla @Librariana 4y
Traci1 That's unfortunate. I almost picked the hardback up at B&N this morning. Glad I decided to wait on it. 4y
Megabooks @Traci1 maybe it‘s better in print, but I ended up sending the audiobook back to the library. 4y
RamsFan1963 I'm sorry to hear that the audiobook isn't so great. I was thinking about making it my May choice on Audible. I guess I'll pick something else instead. 4y
Megabooks @RamsFan1963 I‘d probably wait for more reviews to come in. I wasn‘t a fan, but maybe others will feel differently. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
RamsFan1963 @Megabooks Its not at the top of my audiobook want list, so I can wait until it hits the library. There are several recent books I'm interested in listening to before this book. 4y

I was sad when Bourdain passed. His food writing, travel expertise, and general irreverence are always delightful. However, this book left me hungry. It does a little bit of a lot of things - some episode pull quotes, some eulogies, some travel information with pricing/addresses/telephone info. It isn't comprehensive enough to be a standalone travel guide anywhere, just a jump off.
Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
