The Years That Followed
The Years That Followed: A Novel | Catherine Dunne
21 posts | 8 read | 53 to read
Acclaimed international bestseller Catherine Dunnes thrilling US debut is the story of two wronged women bent on revenge at all costs. Revenge is sweeter than regret Dublin. Calista is young, beautiful, and headstrong. When she falls in love with the charming, older Alexandros and moves to his native Cyprus, she could never imagine that her whirlwind courtship would lead to a dark and violent marriage. But Calista learns to survive. She knows she will find peace when she can finally seek retribution. Madrid. Pilar grew up with very little means in rural Spain and finally escaped to a new life. Determined to leave poverty behind her, she plunges into a life of working hard and saving money. Enchanted by an older man, Pilar revels in their romance, her freedom, and accruing success. Shes on the road to achieving her dreams. Yet there is one thing that she is still searching for, the one thing she knows will make her truly happy. Sweeping across the lush European backdrops of Spain, Greece, and Ireland, The Years That Followed is a gripping, modern telling of a classic story. As two wronged women plot for revenge, their intricately crafted schemes send shockwaves through their families that will echo for many generations to come.

Two women who were wronged in love work to deal with their pasts. Calista who left her home as young and naive bride married to an older man seeks revenge. Pilar who worked hard to rise above the poverty of her youth gives into her attraction to a married man and faces repercussions she cannot ignore. They never truly meet but their lives connect. This was a gripping read and, while I would have liked more front the ending, one I would recommend.

This book. I cannot recommend it enough. It was everything I wanted the Ferrante books to be. It kept me up at night, desperate to find out what would happen. Everything about it is SO well done. All the stars to Catherine Dunne.

I loved this novel! Two separate narrative strands follow two women who made bad choices in love (trigger warning for domestic violence, pervasive though not graphic), and then became obsessed, one with vengeance and the other with restitution. Beautiful writing, gorgeously drawn settings, interesting characters, and a dose of suspense. A winner! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 #recommendsday

Bostonmomx2 Thanks for that trigger warning, I'll need to skip. 7y

That's an interesting way of putting it. We teachers are invested, yes, but "illuminated" by our students' achievements? ?

Megabooks Kinda weird phrasing... 7y
cathysaid I would say I'm enlightened by my students in Freshman Comp, but I'm not so sure about illuminated. My vocabulary has certainly widened, anyway. For example, last week I learned the word "fleek." ???? 7y

This is definitely another #TBRtemptation! I just read the prologue and ????? ... "There is just the one message, as she'd expected. Very few people have this number. 'Aphrodite,' a man's voice says, 'it is done. The transaction is completed.'

I've seen a few notes calling this book Ferrante-esque, which I would semi agree with. Semi because I've only read the first book in the Neapolitan quarter 😩. Anyways regardless of its comparison the book itself is packed with juice drama. Revenge, love affairs and women fighting forward on their own. Definitely one to read if ur looking for an escape. Did I mention it's set across Spain, Greece and Ireland? Warning the travel bug will bite u!

TouchstoneBooks YAAASSSSS so thrilled to see this Lupita!! 😍 7y

The books I featured on Twitter tonight. This one is a retelling of Greek myth set in Europe in the 1960s to 1980s. Revenge, strong women, love, betrayal. @TouchstoneBooks Looking forward to it--and all of these

No reading for me tonight. First, Allison begged me from the moment I got home to make bookmarks to sell with her. I figured out why: my mom messaged me about selling bookmarks I made years ago at her craft sale. Ally thinks this will get us on to Shark Tank & her a 🐴. #dreamon

Then my sister called. She had a craptastic day. Her realtor canceled their listing. Don't tell Allison, but I think I'll send my sister on me if these as a pick me up.

LitHousewife @Texreader Crafting is a lot of fun. I usually listen to audiobooks, but I can't with my kids around - they would complain the whole time. 8y
LitHousewife @DivineDiana Thank you! She really is a little dreamer. She was wanting to do it all over again tonight. I told her I needed a break. We'll be at it again tomorrow, though. She's got ideas. 8y
LitHousewife @Riveted_Reader_Melissa She's definitely got ideas! I'm curious to see how long this lasts. It's also a nice way to spend time with her. 8y

Perfect opening line for today: "The July heat is an anvil."

Monday lunch time finds me once again in my workplace hidey-hole starting a new book. This one is set both in Dublin and Madrid, which are both on my bucket list. By choosing an October release I'm also sending Mother Nature subtle hints that I'm now ready for cooler weather. Is she listening???
