Sixth in the Veronica Speedwell series, this finds Veronica and Stoker exploring a new facet in their relationship as well as investigating the death of a famous pioneering mountain climber who belonged to the Curiosity Club of elite intrepid women. While doing so, a connection to the case involves Veronica impersonating the princess of the small principality where the death took place after her sudden disappearance. This one‘s full of intrigue,🔻
A little less royal intrigue, "a little more action please!" ?
Lamentably, this entry in the series really dragged; the ratios of political history, scandal among the peerage and dealing with unlikeable characters was far too high for my taste. Even if the lesson it suggests, how monarchy replaces living a life with a sense of duty or dissipation, and everyone in their orbit is similarly self-sacrificing or corrupt, is useful. 1/2
While there are aspects of historical fiction that set my teeth on edge, the opportunity to witness Veronica excoriating the aristocracy should not be missed.
#AnUnexpectedPeril by #DeannaRaybourn is the sixth book in the #VeronicaSpeedwell series. The story takes place in January 1889 and follows Veronica Speedwell, a member of the Curiosity Club, as she investigates the murder of a pioneering mountain climber named Alice Baker-Greene. The investigation leads to the discovery of a missing princess and a peace treaty on the verge of collapse. • Victorian Cozy • 3.5 Stars rounded down to 3 on Goodreads
My review for this is what my review is for all the books in this series. Veronica Speedwell is delightful and Stoker is delightfully grumpy. Another interesting and fun adventure with them!
Veronica Spedwell #6 was my third completed vacation read. Once again, Veronica and Stoker get caught up in drama and adventure. Another fun one!
Listened to the tagged book while working on this bookish puzzle with Nancy Drew covers. I've had my eye on this puzzle for a long time and finally decided to treat myself last week and bought it and some other puzzles (most of them also bookish). #audiopuzzling
I just adore Veronica Speedwell.

Wonderful! Book 6 in the series is delightful-I just love this cast of characters and Veronica Speedwell is a favorite. Can‘t wait for the next one to come out in February. #Bookspin #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks #Pantone2022 #HarborBlue @Clwojick #Booked2022 #fictionalroyal @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

Getting ready for tomorrow‘s #Bookspin drawing.

My journey reading Shadow of the Wind is years long but finally finished on audio. Glad I didn‘t bail but probably won‘t read the others in the series. Dial A was okay, funny but there is a part of the story where I‘m not a fan. Still love the Veronica Speedwell series so it‘s the pick of the week. Hope to finish all 5 ongoing books this week.
I love Veronica Speedwell so much and it pains me to say I just didn't love this book compared to others in the series. Veronica is slowly meeting more and more of her family and ends up in an adventure to impersonate a Princess from anther country while trying to keep England and them both out of war. There has also been a murder she just knows is connected to the foreign dignitaries and people climb mountains! It was fun, if slightly boring.
Making my way through September TBR as I'm unofficially doing #BookSpinBingo. I finished the tag book yesterday and have started Distress Signals already. Most of these titles are either book club or for #LittensDressedInBlood. :)
Tore through this, as expected! Enjoyable, but I felt bad for Stoker, who genuinely just wanted to live in peace for a bit, at least from murder investigations.
Veronica and Stoker are back at solving another murder, this time of a female mountain climber on the continent. I felt like the last book was a disappointment but this one was quite good again. It also advanced the story about Veronica‘s origins. The cover is worth talking about, too, absolutely gorgeous. This was a perfect pick to get me back into the joy of audiobooks, from which I was in a long slump, allowing me to craft for hours on end.
Now I get to color! I love audiocrafting! Still working on the gnomes.
@freeatlast1137 This was what I was doing while talking to you on the phone. 😁
Audiocrafting again, tonight making wee forest critters. Any favorite animal?
The tagged book is perfect to listen to while making wee gnomes.
Audiocrafting. Like my wee fishies?
I started this audiobook tonight. I am trying to start reading something light when I‘m also reading something I expect to be sad and depressing (I Am Malala). My deep slump this summer started when I was reading three dark and depressing books at the same time. It appears I can‘t do that anymore. So Veronica Speedwell it is. I wish I were a bigger fan of the narrator.

Veronica Speedwell came to mind so she‘d be off chasing butterflies. 🦋
Loved this book, which isn't a surprise because I love this entire series. It didn't have as much banter as the others in the series, and I missed that, but I'm looking forward to the next book, which comes out in February.
But why do they keep doing these footnotes? Was trying to remember which book the mystery was from taking people out of the story that much because I feel like these take me out.
"Stoker, I cannot say that I care much for your goat. He is leering at me." Deanna Raybourn always has such fantastic opening lines to her books.
I have turned into such a fan of Veronica Speedwell! I have found her to be a character who continues to develop with each new experience that she encounters and I adore that. This latest story explored the developing relationship between her and Stoker for which I was thrilled. I also found the scheme that Veronica and Stoker became involved with to be quite fun and interesting. There was plenty to keep my attention from start to finish.
I always enjoy the romance-tinged adventures of Stoker and Veronica.
Oh I loved it, I loved it so much. I was worried that (spoiler) now the romantic tension was gone, the series would fall flat- it doesn‘t. Thank you SO much, wonderful author, for all of this. What a treat. I‘ll be buying my IRL copy and rereading. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The sixth outing of this delectable series delivers in every way and I highly recommend the adventures of Veronica Speedwell without reservation. However, I urge you to start with the first volume and continue in order because it is the development of the relationship between Veronica and her companion Stoker that you must experience from its curious beginning... 😉
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
While definitely enjoyable, this wasnt my favorite in the series. The first half felt a little slow, but it picked up and I was much more invested in the second half... Still a pick, but not a 5 star pick
My new Veronica Speedwell book came today! So excited to read this!
Mountaineering and Queen Victoria‘s plan to marry her descendants off across Europe feature in this exciting new instalment of Veronica‘s adventures. So much fun.
When a female mountain climber dies, Veronica and Stoker step in to solve the murder. This is one of my favorite series and I enjoyed this entry.

It was good. Very good. Truly enjoyed spending time with Veronica and Stoker.
A new Veronica Speedwell book?
It‘s gonna be a good day!
Smart and entertaining. Number 6 in the series centers around female mountaineers of the Victorian Era and a fictitious country that gleans its troubles from some very real pre World War I friction in history. Veronica and Stoker have become my favorite adventurous crime solving duo and in this one JJ Butterworth is featured extensively. This was great fun and I learned some things too.
#CurrentlyListening to the latest investigative adventures of lepidopterist #VeronicaSpeedwell and her taxidermist inamorato, Stoker. Always so good! The banter is terrific!
Spent the first leg of the #readathon at A&E/ER. My son was jostled in front of the school building and fell on his shoulder/shoulderblade. Ages of waiting and an x-ray later, it's just a really bad bruise.
Managed to finish the tagged book, eventually. And started "Project Hail Mary".

#BookReport - Finished 5 books this week! 2 audio and 3 print! Liked 3 out of 5.
I‘m currently reading Mr. Penumbra‘s bookstore, I‘ve never read it before and I‘m not sure it aged well. Like Google did not ruin books, but we‘ll see how it ends.
I‘m also listening to a New Zealand mystery, so yay accents! 💚
#WeeklyForecast Read my #FoodandLit pick and my #doublespin
So good! 💚💚
I love this series! I love Veronica and Stoker and I know I‘m biased. My favorite thing to read is historical mysteries and this one sets the bar.
This one focuses more on the mystery and less on their relationship. But they still had their usual banter, etc.
Oh, my! Only Veronica Speedwell can get into such interesting situations in the course of an investigation, and drag Stoker with her. Some of my favorite characters. As always, Raybourn writes the best dialogue. Picture has nothing to do with the book, but I know that lepidopterist Veronica would appreciate the monarch caterpillars munching my milkweed
Of course it was fantastic—it has Veronica Speedwell, Stoker, taxidermied animals, political intrigue, danger, and all the adventure a Victorian lady could ever want. Not my favorite in the series but a good outing nonetheless. And I will, of course, continue reading the series. I always look forward to spending time to Speedwell.
They‘re at it again! 😃 Veronica Speedwell and her sidekick Stoker, causing mischief and investigating murders in this cozy Victorian mystery. This was a solid entry into the series... not my fave but still a lot of fun 🙃 Also I think these are better in print than on audio. Don‘t want to give anything away... more in the comments section. 😆
