A Clockwork Orange (Restored Text)
A Clockwork Orange (Restored Text) | Anthony Burgess
A newly revised text for A Clockwork Oranges 50th anniversary brings the work closest to its authors intentions. A Clockwork Orange is as brilliant, transgressive, and influential as when it was published fifty years ago. A nightmare vision of the future told in its own fantastically inventive lexicon, it has since become a classic of modern literature and the basis for Stanley Kubricks once-banned film, whose recent reissue has brought this revolutionary tale on modern civilization to an even wider audience. Andrew Biswell, PhD, director of the International Burgess Foundation, has taken a close look at the three varying published editions alongside the original typescript to recreate the novel as Anthony Burgess envisioned it. We publish this landmark edition with its original British cover and six of Burgesss own illustrations.

You ever find a book reference in a song that finally makes you read it? That‘s basically what happened here. A Clockwork Orange has been on my TBR since high school 😅 The slang is a bit much but I gave myself over to it as other reviewers have suggested. I think it makes for a stronger ending if we pretend chapter 21 doesn‘t exist 🤷🏻‍♀️ I still haven‘t seen the movie will probably save for my October Watchlist 🍊⚙️ #BookMusicPairing

Reading_Beyond_The_Book_Cover I still need to pick this up. It‘s mostly because I want to watch the movie, but not before I read the source material. 😂 I guess I better get to it. Have you seen the film? 14mo
Ruthiella The movie is more brutal than the book, IMO. 14mo

whilst the film initially made me quite hesitant to read the book, uncomfortable and graphic scenes felt more palatable in text than they did visually in Kubrick's adaptation. re-read as soon as i had completed it to try and grasp nadsat better, very interesting to see its links to Russian.

In days where the US government (& governments around the world) is threatening more & more tyrannical action, & dissolving almost any aspect of personal privacy & liberty, A Clockwork Orange has never felt more relevant then today. It takes an honest look at governments & institutional authority & shows no timidity in its criticism. This book isn‘t just a must read, it is a must own.

Entertaining from start to finish. It‘s appalling how easily Alex and his “droogs” commit horrible crimes. Loved the question of whether you‘re still human if you don‘t have the choice to be good or bad. Also really enjoyed the nadsat slang.

I did not enjoy this at all! There was no plot, very hard to read the slang. Just did not get it. I guess thats why I dont like to read fantasy/futuristic. Dont think ill be seeking out the movie either.

Pogue I like fantasy and futuristic but I hate this book. 4y

dragondrool I've tried to read this three or four different times. The weird slang kills it for me. I have seen the film. It's easier to grasp, with the visuals, but it's very strange.

phantomx @rather_be_reading It's a difficult book to read. Nadsat, the fictional slang language invented by Burgess is a mix of Russian, Rommany, rhyming, and possibly other languages--Burgess loved languages--which makes it hard for readers to figure out what's going on. I was going through a list of banned books when I picked this up, and got through the novel in a week or two. Also, I watched the movie in another language as well. 4y

Got this one in just under the wire, getting my second #bookspinbingo for October.

It‘s a relief to finally get to one of the oldest titles on my TBR.

I initially worried I‘d be thrown off by the vernacular, but actually found it was fairly intuitive and helped to envelop you in the world of the book which is kind of genius. It was great thematically.

10/10 would recommend the experience

Packing for my trip and I‘ve got the essentials on hand

This has been on my TBR for MANY years. When I pulled it off my bookshelf & opened it I found my dorm check-in form from my sophomore year of college...in 2008 😂

I then remembered the inspiration for buying this book - my sociology professor - who I was mildly obsessed with 😬 He loved this book so I was determined to love this book. We‘ve evolved since then, luckily 🤦🏼‍♀️

paper.reveries We all have that one teacher 😂 I never read this either! Are you digging it? 4y
Annie1215 @daisyheadmaesie I‘m about a third of the way through. I thought I‘d be thrown off by the language, but I‘m picking up on the context more intuitively than I expected. It‘s kind of heady in a good way. I‘ll keep you posted when I finish! 4y

1. I‘m surprising my parents with a visit for Halloween since my mom can‘t be out and about because of her chemo. My parents are on a dead end so we‘ve never had a ton of trick or treaters. More candy for me!

2. It‘s a spooky cemetery pic I took in Salem - but I‘ve had it for months 😬 so it wasn‘t intentional for Halloween.

“What‘s it going to be then, eh?”

Rough start linguistically but eventually I was sucked in.
An incredibly thought provoking work & a psychoanalytical gold mine through the thoughts and recollections of a comedic sociopath. It was dark & grotesque at times with hints of beauty & knowledge lingering. Yet in the end, I found myself fighting for Alex.

Off to finally watch the movie! 🍿

What an excellent book. It took quite a few pages to follow the writing style but I enjoyed it once I caught on. I don‘t often reread books but this may be an exception. I love when a movie follows a book so closely. I decided to watch the rest of Kubrick‘s films that I have not seen, he was so talented. I‘d love to hear some of your favorite Kubrick movies. I‘ve already seen Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, and Eyes Wide Shut.

I finally read this #bannedbook and was not disappointed! Yes, the violent subject matter is tough but I think it‘s worth it. I thought maybe the use of the Nadsat language would trip me up, but it‘s easy enough to glean from context the meaning of the words. And Tom Hollander did a great job with the narration! This one definitely leaves you with much to think about.

Ended up liking this book by the end, I feel there was a good lesson to be learned and an interesting plot line. I know the defining feature of the book is the nadsat language but I think that's why I found it so hard to get into. The big reason I give it a so so is because it took me SO long to read and that rarely happens to me because I was so bored in the middle. Still, glad I finished 😬

Been on hiatus a while because it is taking me FOREVER to finish this book. I cannot for the life of me get into it. I figured out the nadsat language pretty quick but I just don't care about the characters or storyline so idk if I'll enjoy it much. A few good quotes are sticking with me though. Fingers crossed I finish soon 🤞

rretzler The first time I started it, I also couldn‘t get into it. I waited 15 years or so, and when I tried again, found that I really enjoyed it. It‘s not for everyone granted. 5y

What say you? Can a movie be as good as the book even if it doesn't resemble it or is just loosely based on the original book? I have to say of the only two books/series I've actually read, Harry Potter and Pride and Prejudice, I loved both book and movie(s).

My droogs who have read this horrorshow classic and/or have viddy the movie, will agree that Alex is definitely a #villain!

There are two versions of the novel: early American editions (left) had the last chapter removed (which the Kubrick movie reflects), and versions (right) that have all chapters (or “restored”), as originally published in Britain. Being the book nerd I am, I have both 🤓!
