The “Collège des Quatre-Nations†(College of Four Nations) in Paris was established in 1661 by Cardinal Mazarin in his will. It was created to educate students from four territories that had recently come under French control through the Treaty of Westphalia (1648) and the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659).
1.Alsace
2.Roussillon
3.Artois
4.Pignerol (Pinerolo) – a town in Piedmont, now in Italy
These regions were incorporated into France during the mid-17th century, and the college was intended to integrate elites from these new provinces into French culture and administration. 2d
