1. Tagged is the last new book I‘ve read. I‘ve also been doing a lot of rereads & the Governess Game is the actual last book I finished.

2. I‘ve subscribed to both LitJoyCrate and OwlCrate. I still get OwlCrate as I like it a bit more. LitJoy was a bit too HP focused. Although I did like LitJoy‘s special editions of classics.

3. Not a book but a poem, I always read A Visit from St. Nicholas by Clement Clarke Moore

I loved the premise & it gave me an idea for a story (given that it‘s NaNoWriMo month and I haven‘t written a thing!). I mostly enjoyed the story & read it fairly quickly. But I did have to just read & not think too hard about whether things made sense. But in end, a few things, including some character development, bugged me. So a soft pick.

Thanks again Lisa for sending me this book! 😘

TracyReadsBooks I also loved the premise and thought it had great potential…which ultimately wasn‘t realized. When I finished, I was definitely left wanting more from the story than we got. 2w
TheSpineView You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed 2w
Karisimo I enjoyed it too, but had to consciously overlook some plot holes 😕 2w

To be clear, I am a nerd. But my nerdism does not encompass enthusiasm for cartography. I just cannot care about the drama of Nell, passionate but disgraced (a map scandal!) historic map expert, not even when a murder mystery possibly involving an old highway map is involved. If I am going to follow the adventures of New Yorkers with nerdy jobs, I far prefer Notary Publix! https://youtu.be/LncpjIzsnww

SamAnne LOL. I was a member of BOTM for 2 months. Some promo deal. This is one of the books I received. Sounds like a hard pass, perhaps. 3w
LitStephanie @SamAnne my quick search showed mixed reviews. Some people really enjoy the map geeking out. I thought it was boring. Also, Nell's father is a jerk who ruined her career, and I got the sense that there is going to be some crap about his character being redeemed because he was protecting her. I am sick of books trying to justify the behavior of garbage parents. 3w

I've been doing a pretty poor job reviewing books lately, but I wanted to thank @IndoorDame for the great #TrappedonanIsland picks!! I did read two of them this month - The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, & the Horse was a delight with such beautiful illustrations and gentle words. I also really enjoyed The Cartographers, although I was frustrated by the way a lot of the world-building didn't match/wasn't explained, which left me feeling a little ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) unconvinced about the villain's motivations. It was still a really engaging read, though, and I LOVED the concept. The other three are back on the shelf for now, but I'm sure they'll picked for a different month sometime!!

Thanks for hosting this challenge @aperfectmjk - I'm already excited about December!!

I had such high hopes for this but in the end it fell flat.
The book was much too long, there were giant holes in the plot, the characters were flat and boring. There is so much drama for a story that just doesn't fit with a dramatic storyline.

I finished The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd - the first of my goals for #20in4. I was hooked when I discovered it was set in and around the New York Public Library and there were maps! The characters are extremely nerdy about what they do which is great, and there are lots of surprises. Could be unbelievable, but I really want to believe it. Anyway, definitely a worthwhile read! I will be checking out Shepherd‘s other novels soon!

I wasn't sure about this one because the reviews were so mixed. It wasn't what I expected but I found I really enjoyed it. Nell is a well-developed protagonist & the book places the reader alongside her as she unravels the mystery of the map her father died to protect. This is definitely a magical realism book so you may want to pass if that isn't your thing. It isn't mine but I enjoyed it regardless.⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is between a pick & so-so. The world of maps, as presented here, was interesting & the concept of phantom settlements was fascinating. I would love to read other stories that play with that idea. But none of the characters were interesting. A few of the original Cartographers had potential but I didn't feel that anyone was well developed. Most of the choices they made were strange. Worse the fear they all lived with didn't feel realistic.

Kristin_Reads I just started this this morning! I‘m on page 75 and it‘s holding my attention, but I‘m definitely not sure about it. 4mo

#StoryGraph: fiction literary magical realism thriller adventurous mysterious medium-paced

I had a hard time getting into this book.

From the Publisher:
From the author of The Book of M, a highly imaginative thriller about a young woman who discovers that a strange map in her deceased father‘s belongings holds an incredible, deadly secret—one that will lead her on an extraordinary adventure and to the truth about her family‘s dark history.

I can‘t decide if I liked this. The premise was intriguing but many of character motivations were really hard to understand. Especially the villain— what was their motivation beyond “obsession”? Most of the twists were clear to me well before the story revealed them. I did have to read this a bit faster than typical because of its library due date, so I will cut it a little slack. It was readable, so I‘d give this author another chance.

I liked it. Nell‘s was an interesting story. I liked the background she had with Felix and how her parent‘s story was slowly revealed over time. Really like that it was based on a real story featuring the General Drafting Corporation and Rand McNally. The seriousness that the character‘s gave to their map making made the story more interesting and highlighted what was at stake. Not a fast pace, but worth the time.

This maybe had a little too much going on? It felt both rushed and slow but in the end, it was a soft pick for me. The present-day story was a sort of frantic thriller but then the past was more of a Secret History vibe? I would have preferred a focus on one or the other because both were good on their own but I didn‘t care for them together.

The premise of this book is so good, but the execution is lackluster. Lots of other reviewers have used the word “mess”, which is accurate. There were too many characters to keep track of, and the romance storyline was terrible and unnecessary. Meh. #BotM

I was expecting to love this one. It has all those great elements: a murder mystery, libraries, maps, etc. But for some reason the story was lacking for me. I found myself avoiding it. I think it was the character of Nell, I thought the backstories of the other characters was fascinating. It wasn‘t awful, I just wanted to love it more. Also, I think I saw every twist coming, which is not normal for me. It might just be a case of high expectations.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was such a cool premise, and the way Shepherd plays with the redrawing of the lines of reality spoke to me a lot. I also enjoyed Nell, who is fairly relatable to me as a tiny, kind of quiet, librarian-lady but also someone who knows when to stand their ground. The final two pages are so good they gave me actual chills, and my only complaint is I want more Bear (the literal best side-character I‘ve read in years)!

I really debated with myself on how to rate this book because I DID enjoy it, but the more I think about it, the more ambivalent I feel about it. The thing is, I wanted to love it but, at the end of the day, I just … didn‘t.

I found Nell as a main character somewhat lackluster & some of the character motivations were confusing, but my complaints are far more nitpicky, so read on in the comments if you wish, but take it with a grain of sand.

Mogoeg So here‘s the thing - a. I‘m a geographer & b. my specialty area is not remotely cartography adjacent. Not even close. So when Felix (specializing in modern cartography) has to explain to Nell (specializing in historical cartography & who is apparently cartographic royalty🙄) what a ghost settlement is - I don‘t buy it. Even if Nell didn‘t have to sully herself TAing geography 101 like a common grad student, there is NO WAY she wouldn‘t know that. (edited) 7mo
Mogoeg Also, in contemporary geography grad programs the fields of cartography and geographic information systems (GIS) are one in the same. And in the book there is a huge Google-esque company but MAPS - that is 100% a GIS company. Yet the term GIS never appears once in the book. I can‘t adequately explain how maddening that is - it‘s like a novel about anthropologists that never mentions ethnography - it‘s truly bizarre. (edited) 7mo

A little cheesy, sure but magical! Nell is the center of this story—her parents‘ past swirls all around her & threatens her future but there is a way through it all, there‘s always a map! The breadcrumbs are clear here, & there‘s hardly a jerking twist but a slow journey, you see where it‘s going but the author still captures you along. Loved the mystery & whimsy! Also, the hardcopy has lovely pages! Read if you like libraries, romance & secrets.

If you're interested, my reasons for DNF are listed in the comments under the spoiler tag.

#AwesomeApril #readathon @Andrew65

julesG Too many things that were just plain wrong.

1) a cartographer is a person who draws maps. Nell, as far as I got in the story, is not a cartographer, she's a library curator handling rare maps and printing copies of maps and aging them.
2) As a scholar Nell should know that you do not handle old/rare maps with dish gloves.
3) How in the fresh hell was her father allowed to take priceless maps home from the NYPL?

I really wavered between liking this one and being disappointed. So much potential here. Such a cool concept overall. The cover art is beautiful. But, the story felt a bit too drawn out and I could have done with a lot less of the backstory. The twists were really predictable.
