3 ⭐ The second book by S. A. Barnes introduces us to Dr. Ophelia Bray. Her specialty is asleep. When people don‘t get enough sleep on spaceships and visiting other planets it could cause them to become self-harm inflicting murderous tyrants. Ophelia wants to make sure this never happens to anyone else again. As the only psychologist who was just embedded on a ship that had recently lost a member, her travel is not going to be easy.

LibrarianRyan This book theorizes complications that can arise from sleep status. From being put into a cryogenic sleep for long space trips. Our crew ends up landing on a planet that others have been to, however things are odd. Why are they seeing people that should never be there. Why won‘t people just listen to her. And why can‘t Ophelia stop re-living the bad things her father did. Is she likely to be the murdering maniacal man that her father was? I liked 5d
LibrarianRyan this book, but it was an incredibly slow start as the world was being built. As we learned about Ophelia and her family and everything that happened. This section of the book felt like it dragged on for ever. When one finally gets to the meat and bones of the action and the horror it goes by in the blink of an eye. And I did like the book I thought the ending was a little lackluster. It almost felt like it ended too soon or like it might be giving 5d
LibrarianRyan itself space for a sequel. I hope not because to be honest I wouldn‘t read a sequel. 5d

I alternated between the audiobook and the hardcover on this one. It's a bit slow to unfold, and I wasn't thrilled with some of the character interactions, but overall I liked this novel quite a bit. It's atmospheric and tense, and more like a space story than a ghost story. The blurb on the cover of the Aardvark edition is amusing once one reads the story.

Live rock and roll last night, a run this morning, live classical (or more accurately Romantic and Modern) orchestral music this afternoon, and now a glass of wine and the tagged spooky book before playing euchre with my little family. A nice, balanced weekend!

This sci-fi/horror story is creepy and atmospheric but the plot dragged along and there wasn't much character development. It's too bad, as the sci-fi elements were interesting and had lots of potential for a great story.

Did you enjoy September's selection Ghost Station? Here are a few questions to get us started but feel free to discuss anything.

I thought the book was lackluster. It was way too slow for my tastes. The first half felt more of a data bumb. The ending was alright but very rushed. I think it could have been flashed out more. After reading the entire book, I thought, given Bray's past she was the wrong person for the job. As for the crew's feelings

See All 17 Comments
The_Literary_Jedi It felt like everyone was unreliable in the story, I didn‘t know who to root for - if that makes sense. Slow world building and I thought description was good almost like a video game setting. 📚📚📚/5 1mo
julesG Agree to lackluster and the pacing being off. 1mo
julesG The crew judged her before they actually knew her. Not something you should do in that kind of environment. 1mo
Lesliereadsalot Just to reiterate, I didn‘t care for the narrator or the crew or the story. I don‘t think the personality of even one crew member came through. Ophelia unfortunately came through too much. #LitsySciFiBookClub 1mo
AmandaBlaze The book had a lot of things I enjoyed, such as unreliable narrators and liminal space horror. Understand completely that this isn\'t everyone\'s cup of tea. I did find some areas kind of boring as well. 1mo
Ruthiella I found it slow too, but ultimately enjoyed it. I did think (and this happens in thrillers or mysteries often) that Ophelia, for someone with her experience and education, had to do some dumb things to keep the plot moving. 1mo
TheSpineView @The_Literary_Jedi Video game is a great analogy. 1mo
TheSpineView @Lesliereadsalot I think that most of the characters suffered from a lack of development among other things. 1mo
TheSpineView @julesG So true! 1mo
TheSpineView @Ruthiella The slowness was what bothered me the most. 1mo
TheSpineView @AmandaBlaze This one was not my cup of tea. I read some reviews were readers loved it 1mo
BookwormAHN I liked the ending and I really wish Ophelia's sister had been in it more. And yes the crew were ridiculous. I hate it when one person is blamed for all of their family's issues. 1mo
TheSpineView @BookwormAHN Bray was the scapegoat. 1mo
kwmg40 I agree with a lot of the comments here. I thought the pacing was slow and there was a lot of repetition. It was very atmospheric and creepy, making this a good horror novel, but I was disappointed that the plot was so weak. The sci-fi elements and backstory had so much potential. 1mo

Ophelia‘s newest assignment is counseling a team that recently lost a member. Only, w/ everybody keeping secrets, & mysterious structures in the distance, things start to go wrong. Horrifically.

After a really slow start, the tensions really built up. The horror element was really well done, but we stayed in Ophelia‘s head too much. & all characters but Ophelia are underdeveloped. With a hugely rushed ending, this left me disappointed.🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

Finally finished this slog of a book at breakfast this morning. Not much happens in the first half, nearly 200 pages. Ophelia Bray, our narrator and psychologist, is a major whiner who tells us every thought she ever had going back to when she was 11. And she never stops…throughout the entire book! Her spaceship lands on a planet where all sorts of havoc with the crew members begins. Happy to get to the end.

#LitsySciFiBookClub

Interesting book. It‘s a fun space thriller (I think calling it a horror is pushing it). It definitely went in a direction I was not expecting. The last 100 pgs are super tense.

Once upon a time ERS caused the brutal sickening deaths of 29 people.

Dr Ophelia Bray has devoted her life to the treatment of ERS which causes mental instability & unreasonably violent attacks against others.

Bray‘s supporting a small crew on an ancient abandoned planet. A crew that‘s close knit & not interested in her help. Well not until their pilot is found murdered in ERS fashion or is it …

Who will live? How many will die?

So bummed to be DNFing this one, but I gave it a long drawn out attempt because I kept putting it down after a chapter. My problem is the main character. She is just a mess, which makes no sense for someone who is supposed to be a mental health specialist. Also I just can‘t believe any of the behaviors of the characters. Oh well.

I think Ghost Station was a solid 3 🌟‘s. It took a long time to get to the horror, and it wasn‘t what I was hoping for. I prefer the psychological horror and having a bit more unknown that just scares the hell out of you. Once I got the explanation, my interest just dropped off. It also felt like she copied and pasted the same character archetypes from the last book.

I will say I am loving space horror and would love any recs people have!

I read Dead Silence by this author last year and absolutely loved it. I still did love this one, but it took a very long time to actually get to the horror. Like a good 200 pages in. But once it did, it was amazing. The errieness and creepiness were immaculate. The question is, is everything really happening, or are we just losing our minds? I absolutely loved how everything went down but would have loved for that to be the whole book. 4/5

This sci-fi thriller starts out slowly as the technology terms and character histories emerge. Narrator and main character, Dr. Ophelia Bray, is doubly burdened by her past— the wealth & power from her mother‘s side and the dark secrets of her father— which make her determined to put her work into helping. A grieving Research and Extraction team gives her the chance for field work on an abandoned claim planet. But it‘s soon clear all is not right…

Ghost Station by S.A. Barnes is a space horror tale of isolation, cold, and inner turmoil set on a planet with many secrets. But it‘s not just the planet itself that has a story to tell, it‘s each of the crewmates as well. But will they share or will the secrets ruin them all?

This is such an amazing blend of isolation and the need for connection and approval.
